SCHOOL UNIFORM POLICY & GUIDANCE This document is also available on our school website: If you are in any doubt about what is/is not permitted, please check with the school beforehand. John Taylor High School is a uniformed school. Therefore there is a clear expectation that students attending John Taylor High School will wear the full uniform, will wear it appropriately and that this expectation will be supported by parents. Our policy is based on the notion that a school uniform: Promotes a sense of pride in the school; Engenders a feeling of community and belonging; Is practical and smart; Identifies the children with the school; Is not distracting in class (as fashion clothes might be); Makes students feel equal to their peers in terms of appearance and financial circumstances; Is regarded as suitable and good value for money, by most parents. Uniform is worn by students in Years A dress code operates for sixth form students (included in this policy). School dress should be reasonable, decent, modest and practical. The school holds stock of nearly new uniform and we welcome the donation of any good, nearly new uniform that your child may have outgrown. Recommended suppliers are listed at the end of this policy. SANCTIONS: there is a general section on sanctions towards the back of this document but there are also specific sanctions relating to individual non-compliance within sections. BLAZERS/TIES: Black, traditional-style uniform blazer (available from school uniform suppliers and most supermarkets but a House specific badge must be sewn on to the left blazer pocket). Black, fitted, fashion-styled jackets will NOT be permitted.

In warm weather the school will operate a blazers off policy. Students will be informed when these days are operating. Alternatives to the blazer will NOT be permitted. BLAZER BADGE: This should reflect the appropriate house colour CHARNWOOD KINGSTONE MARCHINGTON NEEDWOOD ROSLISTON SHERWOOD TIES: All students wear a tie reflecting their house colour. ALL years must wear a clip on tie. No other style of tie is permitted. SHIRTS/BLOUSES: Plain white with formal collar traditional style uniform shirts are available from our uniform suppliers and major supermarkets. Long or short sleeve. The shirt/blouse must be long enough to be properly tucked into trousers/skirts and must have a formal collar, suitable to be worn with a tie. Fashion-style blouses without a formal collar (which tend to be sold by fashion outlets eg New Look, Dorothy Perkins etc) will NOT be permitted. SWEATERS: The V neck sweater is optional. There is a choice of long sleeve or no sleeves from our uniform suppliers. All sweaters should have the school logo. Cardigans, vest-style etc are not permitted..

TROUSERS: Plain (no decorative: buttons, zips, belts etc) black, standard-style, waisted school trousers ONLY. Fashion trousers are not permitted. Trousers becoming narrower towards the ankle are NOT permitted. Trousers with turn-ups are not permitted. Trousers should not be tight-fitting or low-slung or lycra-based. If in any doubt please check with school before purchase.

SKIRTS: FROM SEPTEMBER 2016 all who opt to wear a skirt must wear the black school skirt with the school logo in a choice of 4 styles (DL969, Charleston, Henly, Davenport) available from our 2 uniform suppliers (see end of document for details) which must be knee-length (i.e. the skirt touches the floor if the student kneels) at the start of September. We appreciate that students grow over the year so suggest that parents take growth into consideration when buying a skirt. It will be the school s decision if we deem the skirt to have become too short i.e. it is sitting above the knee. Skorts are only permitted for PE, not as general school uniform. Sanction: some students have the correct length of skirt but choose to roll the waistband up when in school. This is in clear defiance of our uniform expectations and such students will automatically complete a lunch time detention on each occasion. FOOTWEAR: Only black, plain (no colour trim at all or unnecessary adornment e.g. big bows, flowers, studs etc) standard leather-style school shoes will be permitted. Black trainers, canvas-style shoes, backless shoe, suede look, patent etc will not be permitted. Trainer-style school shoes (often displayed in the school shoes section of shops reputable shoe shops included) are not permitted. Boots: We take the view that boots are a practical, hard-wearing alternative to shoes. Boots must be plain (no embellishments/stripes at all), black, leather-style. UGG style boots and Doc Marten boots are NOT permitted. Boots can ONLY be worn with trousers, must be properly laced up and must NOT be tucked into boots (including boot-tongues not being visible).

Socks/tights: Black, grey or white school socks when worn with skirts. Black or natural coloured tights (not patterned). Over-the-knee socks are NOT permitted. Sanction: Students wearing unsuitable footwear will be expected to change into shoes provided by school without question. If uncooperative the student will spend time in isolation.

HAIR/MAKE UP/JEWELLERY/BELTS: Hair: should be neat and tidy without decorative attachments. Extreme styles, unnatural hair colours, tram lines or other shaved shapes in the hair or eyebrows are not permitted. The minimum length hair should be a grade 2. Sanction: the student will be placed in our isolation room. Make-up: Discreet, natural-looking make-up is permitted for Years 10 onwards. Tinted or cosmetic contact lenses are not permitted. False eye lashes are not permitted. Sanction: Students will be asked to remove excessive make-up, lenses or lashes. If this continues, school will treat this as defiance and detentions will be issued. If students refuse, they will be placed in our isolation room. Nails: Clear nail polish is permitted. Acrylic nails or nails grown to a length that is deemed a health and safety issue, will need to be cut down. As a guide, when looking at the nail from the inside/palm side of the hand, the nails should not extend over by more than 2mm. Sanction: Students will be asked to remove inappropriate nail polish and cut nails if deemed too long. If this continues, school will treat this as defiance and detentions will be issued. Jewellery: No jewellery, except for one wrist watch and a maximum of one plain set of stud ear-rings, metalcoloured, one in each ear, worn in the lower ear lobe. No other piercings are permitted. Retainers are not permitted. Sanction: Students will be asked to remove piercings. A second ear-ring in the lower ear lobe will result in the student being asked to remove the piercing and an orange uniform reminder. Additional piercings elsewhere, students will remove the piercing; receive an orange uniform reminder and will attend a lunchtime detention. If uncooperative with regards to removal, or removal is not possible, the student will go into isolation until the item is removed. Belts: Plain black. If a belt is worn it should be for functional not decorative purposes. Maximum width for belt and for plain buckle = 4cms. SCARVES/HATS/GLOVES: Are permitted but cannot be worn anywhere inside the building. The only exception to this is a hijab worn for religious purposes which must be black and must not cover either the face or uniform. OUTDOOR COATS: can be worn over the blazer. Outdoor coats should be appropriate for school, it would be advised that they are waterproof/showerproof and so should not be a fashion item. Hoodies or tracksuit style tops are NOT permitted and will be confiscated. MOBILE PHONES & other electronic devices: should only be used at breaks and lunchtimes, unless otherwise directed by a member of staff in a lesson. They should not be used during lesson changeover. Headphones should not be visible during lessons or lesson changeover. Phones/electronic devices brought into school remain the sole responsibility of the pupil. If for any reason they are confiscated by a member of staff then the school will take responsibility for their safety until returned. School will decide whether the item is returned to the student or to the parent. If a mobile phone is used to contact a parent without permission e.g. to collect when ill or due to a disagreement, the school will issue a 1 hour detention.

PE KIT In September 2016 a new style PE kit was introduced. This is compulsory for all students from September The school specific PE kit can be purchased from our school uniform suppliers. COMPULSORY OPTIONAL School specific T-shirt in House colour (there are 2 versions available) School specific skort or shorts in House colour School specific rugby shirt in House colour (for rugby and football lessons only) School specific rugby shorts with school logo (for rugby lessons only) Black knee length socks White ankle socks Sports trainers (NOT fashion trainers, non-marking sole) Shin pads and gum shields Football boots (for football and rugby lessons) School specific jumper in House colour School specific plain black tracksuit trousers with school logo (Oct-Easter, not for hockey, football, rugby or gymnastics apart from supporting religious beliefs) Plain black skins or equivalent There will be strictly no use of any other aspect of fashionable PE clothing. It is advised that students have their kit NAMED. All jewellery should be removed for PE lessons. We recognise that PE kit can be expensive therefore if you have older children who have out-grown PE kit it is perfectly acceptable to pass this down to a younger sibling. REWARDS We want to reward those students who are consistently adhering to the uniform policy. Every term those students who have not needed to have any uniform reminders will receive 10 merits towards their House. SANCTIONS For students with incorrect uniform, the school has a stock of uniform which can be loaned out temporarily for the day. This is regularly cleaned and laundered. There is an expectation that, if a student is asked to wear this uniform, then they will comply without argument. Refusal to comply will result in the student being internally isolated; parents will be contacted. Students who do not wear the correct uniform will receive a uniform reminder from members of staff. 5 uniform reminders will result in a one hour detention after school. Parents will be made aware of when the detention will take place. Parents will be expected to make suitable arrangements for their child to get home. Please note that there are specific sanctions for other issues, as noted within this document. Confiscated items will be kept in a safe place. The school will decide how long the item is confiscated for. Usually this is until the end of the day but if the issue is persistent this may be longer or only returned to the parent when they come into school to collect the item.

SIXTH FORM DRESS CODE Sixth Form dress is an important part of the School's image. As a public institution we need to project an image appropriate to the work we do and, as senior members of the School, the Sixth Form are an important part of that image. The respect that an institution earns from the public it serves is, in part, due to the appearance of its members. It is therefore in the students' own interests to adhere to acceptable standards of appearance because they will ultimately benefit by association with a respected establishment. In addition, it is important that the senior members of the School provide a positive role model for the lower school in terms of smart appropriate dress. As the senior members of the school community, Sixth Formers need not wear formal uniform. However, as preparation for the workplace and as older role models in the school they are expected to adhere to the school s dress code. School dress should be reasonable, decent, modest and practical. All sixth form students are expected to adhere to the following: Item Business suit Shirt/Blouse Jumper Tights Shoes Hijab Jewellery Hair Expectations Matching formal-style dress, skirt or trousers in a dark colour. If choosing to wear a dress or skirt, they should be of an appropriate length. Short, tight, lycra-style skirts/dresses are not permitted. Jackets must be worn around school. A smart, collared shirt which should be tucked in. The shirt should be worn with an appropriate tie of choice; the tie must be worn up to the neck so that the top button cannot be seen. OR A smart sleeved shirt, blouse or top which should not be low-fronted, low-backed, cropped, off-the-shoulder, strappy, transparent, or any similar unsuitable style. Plain, jumper (if worn in conjunction with a jacket) If worn should be plain dark or neutral. Dark, leather type shoes or boots. Doc Marten, Uggs or similar boot styles are not permitted. Plain hijabs are permitted but must not cover the face Should not be excessive. Facial piercings (including tongue) and visible tattoos and body piercings are not permitted. Stud ear-rings only. Should be kept tidy with no extreme styles. Dyed hair must be within a natural colour range. As part of Safeguarding, Sixth formers MUST wear their ID badge and school lanyard around their neck, clearly on display, at all times. Denim, leather and lace are not permitted. SANCTIONS For students dressed incorrectly, the school has a stock of clothing which can be loaned out temporarily for the day. This is regularly cleaned and laundered. There is an expectation that, if a student is asked to change their clothing, then they will comply without argument. Uniform reminders will be also issued and a one hour after school detention will be issued once five reminders have been given. We reserve the right to make an informed judgement on any aspects of school dress not covered by this guidance. If in doubt, please check with us first.
