1 Week 1 Introduction to the Fashion Industry Overview of industry; Creation of idea; Sketching it out; Pattern Making; Sample Making; Business Terms and Transactions Vocabulary: colors, patterns, fashion categories, garment types; Grammar: tenses and aspects Listening: listen for gist of a speech as well as literal and implied meanings, clustering, reduced forms Reading: using schematic mapping Writing: note taking skills; descriptive writing skills Speaking: Reduced forms of words and phrases Introduce self to peers. Discuss favorite designers, fashion influences and personal ideas. Sketching Workshop Listen to guest speaker; take notes and ask questions. Visit designers websites. Field trip to high end fashion store, meet w/buyer; write in journal impressions and fashion inspirations. Role Play - Calling a Pattern Maker, asking about prices. Ongoing: Journal entries. questionnaire Write an essay that includes your fashion influences, personal design ideas and describes why you want to be a designer. Initial sketches and be able to describe them. CD, complete Unit 1 in workbook
2 WEEK 2 Fabrics and Fabrication Know your fabrics; Choose a Style; Steps for Draping; Samples; Specifications of assembly Language Focus Vocabulary: Fabric contents, textures, colors, uses. Grammar: Imperative, real conditionals, passive voice, linking verbs Listening: cohesive devices, transactional language, specific info Reading: discourse markers Writing: topic sentences, paraphrasing Speaking: use cohesive devices, giving instructions, requesting info, stress, intonation, rhythm Listen to dialogue and Role Play fabric purchase. Field Trip to Vogue Fabrics and purchase swatches, make journal entry. Follow instructions and design storyboard with swatches and sketches. Read instructions in order to complete burn test to identify fiber content. Listen to Guest Speaker talk about and demonstrate draping. Pair work instruct partner in the steps for draping. Pair work- Describe a style according to target customer, write a brief summary. Complete Samples Evaluation Checklist. Filling out Manufacturing Detail Spec Sheet Written summary of a designer s website. Fill out fabric invoice. Write a brief explanation of a style they want to create based on fabric swatch obtained from field trip. CD, complete Unit 2 in
3 Week 3 The Art of Design Communicating with patternmaker, buyers, seamstress Vocabulary: design jargon Grammar: imperatives, real conditionals, dependent clauses Listening: cohesive devices,transactional language Reading: Logical sequence, summative, resultative, explicative Writing: logical connectors, cause and effect Speaking: colloquial language, pauses, fillers, Watch short video segment of Project Runway / Pair Work - complete exercise that identifies specific styles. Field trip to Chicago Fine Tailoring / Speak with Patternmaker and seamstress. Drape out first design. Describe details and rationale. Read instructions to create first muslin. Guest Speaker: Anna Fong, Clothing Designer. Journal impressions. CD, complete Unit 3 in Journaling of Field trip experience. Week 4 Garment Production Detailing design ideas w/ Patternmaker and Seamstress Vocabulary: production jargon Grammar: imperatives, prepositions, modals Listening: predicting content Reading: skim and scan Writing: compare & contrast Speaking: strategies for repairing trouble spots in conversation Complete pattern construct w/ Patternmaker. Role play: Read pattern instructions for comprehension and be able to describe to seamstress Revisit seamstress to go over pattern instruction for sample making. Clarify design details and custom instructions. Prepare portfolio for 1st Teacher/Student conference. Write clarifications of design details and custom instructions. CD, complete Unit 4 in Download 4 website marketing materials for correct target trade show.
4 Week 5 Buyers & Buying pricing. trade shows Vocabulary: buyer s jargon Grammar: articles Listening: recognizing stress and volume for note-taking Reading: inferring implied meanings Writing: creating syntactic and lexical variety Speaking: strategies for managing turn taking Week 6 Selling / Sales Techniques Vocabulary: sales jargon Grammar: relative clauses Listening: recognize fast speech forms Reading: detecting culturally specific references Writing: persuasive writing Speaking: transactional language, interpersonal exchanges Role Play: call Sales Rep. and explain your line and market. Pair Work: Research in class garment trade show materials. Identify a trade show conducive to your design. Present to class. Guest speaker: Macy s buyer, take notes and listen for eight buyer-specific terms. Identify and fill out invoices and purchase orders. Field trip to Stylemax trade show to observe selling techniques of other designers, journaling. Role Play sales transactions as a seller. Pair Work - Reading/listening to sales materials; identify correct market. Create a checklist from guest speaker s info. Research pricing for your specific market, write up a justification of your pricing. CD, complete Unit 5 in Written report on field trip and impressions of other designers. Create a look book and price sheet for buyers. CD; complete Unit 6 in
5 Week 7 Merchandising Vocabulary: Merchandising Jargon Grammar: conjunctive adverbs and transitional phrases Listening: recognizing patterns, rules, elliptical forms Reading: recognizing tone, diction and p.o.v Writing: repetition vs redundancy, parallelism Speaking: rhetorical devices for persuasive speeches Field Trip to Chicago Merchandise Mart. Pair Work: Fill in worksheet to identify correct fabrics for a specific target market. Role Play: Merchandising Elements, develop correct line for customer. Read examples of elevator speech. Group Work: Written critique of peers pre-merchandised line. Narrow design focus for customer targeting and justify your selection in writing. CD; complete Unit 7 in Create Elevator Speech. Week 8 Marketing Advertising and Promoting Vocabulary: Marketing jargon Grammar: adding modifiers Listening: using knowledge of reduced forms to clarify meaning Reading: rhetorical effects of punctuation Writing: gauging the audience Speaking: using casual, neutral and formal styles In class presentation: Show and Defend your line of garment for juried trade show. Present elevator speech. Field trip to Pipe and Drape Show. Research marketing techniques and materials to use for Facebook page. Discuss acquired marketing materials.
