3 A WORLD OF WEARABLEART INVITATION It is with pleasure that we introduce the themes for the 2016 World of WearableArt Awards competition. WOW is an international platform for both aspiring and established artists and designers to push the boundaries of their creativity. Launch your career in fashion, film, theatre, design or technology through one of our internships and prize pool of NZD$165,000. Showcase your work of art to an audience of more than 50,000 and have the opportunity to receive national and international exposure through our media programme and curated WOW exhibitions. 4 WHY ENTER WOW? The World of WearableArt Awards is an internationally recognised design competition based in Wellington, New Zealand. WOW brings artists and designers together from all over the world to compete for one of the richest prize pools for wearable art of NZD$165,000. Every year, WOW creates a new theatrical world into which the garments are showcased. Each successful entry is individually choreographed in a two-hour stage spectacular, including world class lighting and stage technology. 40 AWARDS Prizes include cash, travel and opportunities to further enhance your career in the costume, film & fashion industries. AN OPPORTUNITY TO HAVE YOUR GARMENT ON STAGE AMONGST THE WORLD S BEST Over 50,000 people attend each year s show to see the most extravagant works of wearable art brought to life. INTERNATIONAL MEDIA COVERAGE Every year, a large media contingent attend the show and report on the designers who enter. Previous media includes Huffington Post, Time Magazine, The Wall Street Journal, The Guardian UK, Vogue, Elle, Harpers Bazaar, Xinhua and Getty s Images. GARMENTS ON DISPLAY IN THE WOW INTERNATIONAL TOURING EXHIBITION AND WOW & CLASSIC CARS MUSEUM In partnership with the New Zealand Government, WOW has launched an international touring exhibition that showcases the very best of WOW s historic collection. This exhibition is currently touring in the United States. The WOW & Classic Cars Museum in Nelson, New Zealand, also exhibits wearable art garments from each year s show. 5 AWA R DS THE JUDGES CONSIDER THE ORIGINALITY, CREATIVITY, INNOVATION & CONSTRUCTION OF EACH ENTRY. All entries selected for the show will go through a process of three judging rounds to determine the award winning garments. The WOW Awards offer NZD$165,000 in prize money and the Supreme Award winner will receive NZD$30,000 cash. Each section has prize money of NZD$9,700 First Place: NZD$6,000 Second Place: NZD$2,500 INTERNSHIP AT WETA WORKSHOP The winner of the Weta Workshop Costume & Film Section receives a four-week internship at the Academy Award-winning Weta Workshop. An internship at Weta Workshop offers invaluable experience and contacts in the costume and film industry. The winning designer will work at Weta Workshop, the five-time Academy Award winner for best costume design and visual effects for the Lord of the Rings, headed by co-founder Sir Richard Taylor. This section winner also receives accommodation and return airfares from anywhere in the world to Wellington, New Zealand. Third Place: NZD$1,200 BIZARRE BRA SECTION First Place: NZD$4,000 Second Place: NZD$2,500 Third Place: NZD$750 NB: The Bizarre Bra section features in the WOW Competition every other year. 6 2016 SECTIONS AIR NEW ZEALAND AOTEAROA SECTION: Gather inspiration from New Zealand s rich Maori culture or other cultures of our South Pacific neighbours. Consider body adornment, myths & legends, traditional techniques, flora, fauna and native birds to create a work of wearable art. On Reflection Philippa Stichbury, Australia 6

7 BIZARRE BRA SECTION: Though normally hidden, the bra has shown itself to have enormous potential for highly creative and witty reinvention. AMERICAN EXPRESS OPEN SECTION: This section has no thematic boundaries and gives you complete freedom in concept, construction and materials. 8 CREATIVE EXCELLENCE SECTION: Surrealism, Cubism, Expressionism: Select one of these movements and create a work of wearable art. 9 WELLINGTON AIRPORT AVANT GARDE SECTION: Where art and fashion collide! Create a wearable work of art that is revolutionary, extravagant and extrovert, but still stylish and made with skill. Be driven by dreams and fantasies, not commercial reality or the usual restrictions of fashion. PERFORMANCE ART SECTION - THE GREATEST SHOW ON EARTH This section requires costumes that are inspired by the halcyon days of the circus. It s 1884 projected into 2084 and the world of the big top and all its glory, its madness and amazement. It s a bleak place in 2084, when the circus comes to town. From circus freaks, side show alleys to glamour girls and past eras of the circus. Create a costume to perform in, from acrobats to trapeze artists, clowns to jugglers, characters that would dwell in this surreal world.
