1 Zoë Martine Pietras-Swanton Designer s Story My passion toward design led me to Iowa State University where I graduated Cum Laude with a Bachelor s Degree in Industrial Design. During my senior year I focused on Jewelry & Accessories. I had many amazing experiences during my time at Iowa State: I had the opportunity to Intern at Badman Design Studio, I was the President of the ISU IDSA Student Chapter, and I studied abroad for a semester in Australia. These experiences broadened my passion to design jewelry & accessories, home décor, and children s products. Along with creating products I discovered a love for Event Design. Being actively involved in ISU clubs as Event Coordinator sparked my interest in this area. This is a portfolio as a result of my experiences. Enjoy!

2 Photo: Grand Forks Convention & Visitors Bureau Badman Design Internship Summer 2013, I had the awesome opportunity to intern with Dave Badman at Badman Design Studio in Grand Forks, North Dakota. His business works with a variety of different metals to create jewelry, home décor, furniture, and sculptures. This experience allowed me to learn metalsmithing processes, help with various projects, design my own pair of earrings and the responsibilities of owning your own business.

Australia Study Abroad Fall 2013, for a semester I had the opportunity to study abroad in Australia. I attended the University of Newcastle in Callaghan.

4 Australia Study Abroad Fall 2013, for a semester I had the opportunity to study abroad in Australia. I attended the University of Newcastle in Callaghan. This university has an amazing Industrial Design program, where I was able to take a IndD studio, computational modeling course, and entrepreneurship course. These courses led to projects to display in my portfolio such as: my perfume & cologne set and a children s play table & chairs. The abroad courses were beneficial but also the network I made along the way with other future industrial designers. Studying abroad helped me learn about a new culture, which has expanded my skills as a designer and has gave me inspiration for future designs!

5 The Computational Modeling course I took in Australia led me to focus on influential factors and a theory to design a set of perfume and cologne bottles. For my influential factor I focused on water movement and for my theory I used Kinematics. With this pair I was able to create an unique pair of bottles; the perfume bottle is called Collide and the cologne is called Crash. Crash & Collide into your true love

6 Spela My studio course in Australia led me to focus on children playtables. An influence I had while designing was Scanidanivan design, which led me to create Spela (means play in Swedish). While researching I found that there was a gap in the market for aesthetic playtables with a purpose for them after the children grows out of it. This playtable allows adults to use it as a side table after the kid has no more use for it. It is also compactable for easy storage. Mission: cohesion of kids needs and parents wants in children s furniture. Users: Kid Needs: 1. Activity area 2. Ergonomic 3. Fun Consumer: Parent Wants: 1. Safety 2. Easy to clean 3. Image It all begins with Spela.

9 Aquam Lapide 3D printing is becoming very popular. At Iowa State I learned the CAD program Solid Works. With this skill I wanted to apply it to my jewelry design. With plastic being a man made material I wanted the challenge to create a pendent that gave organic aesthetic. As I was playing with forms, I looked into stone features. This piece is called Water Stone in Latin. Materials: Plastic

People have an emotional connection with their headphones. There is something about them that can change a person s mood and feeling towards tasks. There is an intimate interaction between the headphones and person. The fit, sound, comfort, and style need to match the needs of the user. Ear buds and headphones both are popular between both females and males. They both have their pro s and con s for individuals. Yet, this is a product that people wear everyday. With the demand of having some sort of music device, I believed there is a window of opportunity. Music can immerse you to a new place. Take you away from your environment or improve the experience. Music effects both emotion and behavior, making people happier, more relaxed, less anxious, and less overwhelmed. This can explain why individuals wear the headphones in certain situations where they want to feel more relaxed. By this sound of what this product produces it can be very powerful towards the individual, which means it needs to be designed in a unique, creative, and comfortable way.

Being Present in the Moment Fashion Headphones can take you away from the moment you re in. This isn t always a bad thing, but it can be. Sometimes memorable moments need to be heard.

My headphones will allow one to feel the moment with their choice of background music that compliments the situation.

These moments can be as small as hearing the coffee being made in a cafe while you re drinking your coffee at a table. People get sucked into their own world by shutting everything else away by music. My headphones will allow one to feel the moment with their choice of background music that compliments the situation. Headphones and earbuds are located in a position where it is very important what the aesthetics are. The beauty of the device corresponds with if it will be successful in the marketplace. Popular trends have effect on if the device is going to be able to stand a chance compared to other brands on the market. The headphone market is very competitive and if your product is not at a competitive advantage towards aesthetics it will not succeed. Yet, most headphone brands have very similar products that all give a mechanical aesthetic, which does not compliment the ear well. Why can t the headphones be more minimal? Give more compliments to the ear? More organic?

19 Exploring Different Types of Headphones Traditional Headphones Bone Conduction Headphones The reason for why ear buds have to be placed inside the ear was important towards my research. I found that ear buds deliver sound through the outer ear, to the eardrum, and on to the cochlea. Knowing how they work, helped me understand why they are designed the way they are. By understanding how they work and placement I decided I did not want my headphones to be placed in this area. The earbud disrupts the contours of the ear in a bad way to where the earbud hides them. By disliking the aesthetic of traditional headphones I went into further research of what other technology was out there. This is when I was able to find bone conduction headphones. These headphones are placed outside of the ear; either in the back of the ear or in the front, either way touching a bone. The way bone conduction works is by vibrating to deliver sound through a bone, bypassing the eardrum sending nerve impulses to the brain. These headphones are not extremely popular, but the technology is growing to where I believe it will become popular in the near future. I saw great potential with this technology to where I decided I wanted to move it further into my design.

These headphones give the aesthetic of a cuff earring while using bone conduction to generate music. The bone conduction technology allows the using to not only enjoy their music but also the environment around them. By using bluetooth, there are no annoying cords to worry about. Another unique aspect of this device is that they need to be charged since the bone conduction uses a lot of energy.
