1 415 Ohio Street Helena-West Helena Arkansas, Phone: Fax: KIPP Blytheville Collegiate High School Student and Family Handbook Addendum Curriculum Curricula are to be aligned with the curriculum frameworks and used to plan instruction leading to student proficiency on Arkansas content standards, Common Core Standards, and the College and Career Readiness Standards. Curricula should be in alignment with KIPP Delta s vision, mission, goals, and educational philosophy. Student achievement is increased through an integrated curriculum that promotes continuity and a growth in skills and knowledge from grade to grade and from school to school. KIPP Delta will implement the following curricula, however may from time to time change these selections to better meet the needs of students. KIPP Delta will seek to find curricula that align with Common Core and/or state standards. In cases where packaged curricula do not align well with standards or do not meet student needs, teachers may pull from a variety of sources to meet the standards and student needs. Eureka Math in Algebra I, Algebra II, and Geometry Pearson Math in Precalculus and Calculus Holt Science in Biology, Chemistry, and Physics Khan Academy, ixl, Zearn, Scholastic Guided Reading, Fountas & Pinnell Leveled Literacy, APEX, Lexia, and Achieve 3000 in renrichment classes Course Offerings SMART CORE: Sixteen (16) units English: four (4) units 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th Oral Communications: one-half (1/2) unit Mathematics: four (4) units (all students under Smart Core must take a mathematics course in grade 11 or 12 and complete Algebra II.) 1) Algebra I or Algebra A & B* which may be taken in grades 7-8 or 8-9; 2) Geometry or Investigating Geometry or Geometry A & B* which may be taken in grades 8-9 or 9-10; *A two-year algebra equivalent or a two-year geometry equivalent may each be counted as two units of the four-unit requirement for the purpose of meeting the graduation requirement, but only serve as one unit each toward fulfilling the Smart Core requirement. 3) Algebra II; and 4) The fourth unit may be either: A math unit beyond Algebra II: this can include Pre-Calculus, Calculus, AP Statistics, Algebra III, Advanced Topic and Modeling in Mathematics, Mathematical Applications and Algorithms, Linear Systems and Statistics, or any of several IB or Advanced Placement math courses (Comparable concurrent credit college courses may be substituted where applicable); or
2 KIPP DELTA PUBLIC SCHOOLS 2 one unit of computer science chosen from ADE Essentials of Computer Programming, ADE Computer Science and Mathematics, AP Computer Science, AP Computer Science Principles, IB Computer Science, or other options approved by ADE. Natural Science: a total of three (3) units with lab experience chosen from One unit of Biology; and either: Two units chosen from the following three categories (there are acceptable options listed by the ADE for each): Physical Science; Chemistry; Physics or Principles of Technology I & II or PIC Physics; or One unit from the three categories above and one unit of computer science chosen from ADE Essentials of Computer Programming, ADE Computer Science and Mathematics, AP Computer Science, AP Computer Science Principles, IB Computer Science, or other options approved by ADE. Social Studies: three (3) units Civics one-half (½) unit World History - one unit American History - one unit Physical Education: one-half (1/2) unit Note: While one-half (1/2) unit is required for graduation, no more than one (1) unit may be applied toward fulfilling the necessary units to graduate. Health and Safety: one-half (1/2) unit Economics one half (½) unit dependent upon the licensure of the teacher teaching the course, this can count toward the required three (3) social studies credits or the six (6) required Career Focus elective credits. 8 Fine Arts: one-half (1/2) unit
3 KIPP DELTA PUBLIC SCHOOLS 3 Dress Code All Days: Polo: Students are to wear a KIPP Blytheville Collegiate polo. Shirts must be wrinklefree, tucked in at all times, and fit appropriately. o Students at the beginning of 7 th, 8 th and 9 th grade will earn their first uniform shirt. Additional polos can be purchased thereafter. Students starting KIPP midyear or in 10 th grade or beyond will purchase uniform shirts. Sweatshirts and Jackets: Students may choose to wear a KIPP Blytheville Collegiate sweater, pullover or cardigan. All other sweaters are prohibited while in class. Pants: Students must wear professional tan, navy, or black uniform pants (no cargo, skinny khakis, or elastic waist-students have to be able to wear a belt). Students may also wear uniform capir pants or skirts. No shorts, athletic pants, shorts or pants made of denim are allowed. Pants must stay on the outside of shoes or boots at all times. Skirts may not be shorter than two inches above the knees. Pants must fit appropriately (ie, no skinny leg or tight pants). Undershirts: Undershirts must be solid colored. Students may wear tank tops, t-shirts or long-sleeve shirts underneath their polos. If a student is wearing a white uniform shirt, a student must wear a white undershirt and ensure that not undergarments can be seen. Belt: Students must wear a belt every day that they have belt loops on their pants. Students must wear belts that are professional in appearance--distracting/large logos or buckles are allowed. Shoes: Students must wear closed toed shoes. Ladies may wear heels that are less than 1 inch tall. Pants must stay on the outside of shoes or boots at all times. Shoes with laces or straps must remain laced or strapped. Students may not roll up their pants to be above their boots. Cold weather wear: In order to keep warm, students may layer their clothing as follows 1) undershirt, 2) thermal shirts, 3) uniform shirt, 4) KIPP Blytheville Collegiate sweater, pullover or cardigan. Professionalism Expectations Students are expected to carry themselves in a professional manner on a daily basis. This requires that all students wear clean, ironed, not ripped or cut and neat uniforms. All students must refrain from wearing flashy jewelry and accessories. Hair: Hair styles (including facial hair) must be well-groomed and professional in appearance. Hair color must be a natural color. Hats, caps, do-rags, bandanas, and other head coverings are not permitted at the school. Neither mohawks nor buzzed nor shaved designs are allowed. Eyebrows must remain natural. No hair/eyebrow parts, cuts or designs are allowed. The following hair colors are permitted: Basic Colors o Black (1) o Off black (1B) o Dark Brown (2)
4 KIPP DELTA PUBLIC SCHOOLS 4 o Medium Dark Brown (4) o Strawberry Blonde (27) o Light Auburn (30) o Dark Auburn Chestnut (33) Natural Colors o Natural Dark Brown (1B) o Natural M Chestnut Brown (2-4) o Natural Auburn Brown (6) o Natural Blonde (27) o Natural Golden Blonde (12) o Natural Platinum Blonde (613) o Hair colors that are purple, blue, pink, orange, red, yellow, grey, or white are not allowed Jewelry: Jewelry should be discreet and tasteful. (For example: one watch and one bracelet). Students should have no more than one ring on each hand. Earrings must be small and hoops must be one inch or smaller. Females may wear no more than two earrings per ear and may not have any other type of piercing. Necklaces must be worn inside shirts. Males may not wear earrings or any other type of piercing. Makeup: Artificial nails must be a medium length. Nails must be one solid color or French tip. Color must be professional; neon/bright colors are not allowed. Students may not wear make-up with colors other than black/brown/neutral. Colored contacts are not allowed. Head Coverings: ALL hats or other head coverings must be removed before entering the building, including scarves, doo-rags, or bandanas. Only black or brown head bands are allowed. Those who need religious exceptions should notify the school at the beginning of the year. Jean Days On earned jean days, students may wear plain blue jeans instead of pants with a KIPP, field lesson or college shirt. Jeans: Jeans must not have writing on them, nor may they have holes or rips. Jeans may not be jeggings nor may they be skinny jeans. Jeans must fit appropriately (not tight fitting). Jeans may not be tucked into shoes or boots. Shorts and skirts: Students may wear cargo jean shorts or skirts or cargo Khaki shorts or skirts on Friday. Shirts: Students may wear KIPP uniform (middle school or high school polos), field lesson or special event shirts or college shirts. Shirts must be tucked in. Shirts may not be too tight. Sweatshirts: Students may wear KIPP or college sweatshirts or jackets over their shirts. Other outerwear is not permitted while in class. Belts: Students must wear belts on Fridays. No distracting/large logos or buckled are allowed. Shoes: Shoes must be tied and must have the tongue tucked in at all times. **All other professionalism expectations also apply to Jean Days.
5 KIPP DELTA PUBLIC SCHOOLS 5 Designated Free Dress When students are permitted to dress down for weekly incentives or selected activities they are still expected to carry themselves in a respectful, professional manner. Students are permitted to wear: KIPP or a college t-shirt Tennis shoes Jean shorts without rips (or imitation rips) Pants without rips (or imitation rips) Flip Flops Students are not permitted to: Tank tops, shorts that are more than 2 inches above the knee Excessively tight, short (more than 2 inches above the knee) or revealing clothing Clothing with offensive or inappropriate print, hats, bandanas, or gang-related apparel. Pajamas Any clothing, jewelry, or additional items that have negative logos/advertisement or that may distract from the learning process Any student that is dressed inappropriately will be not be allowed to attend classes until a parent or guardian provides a change of clothes. PE Clothing Students may bring clothing for PE classes on designated days. Shirts: KIPP Blytheville PE t-shirt. Shirts must not have any rips or holes and must fit appropriately. Shorts/Pants: Black or blue gym shorts or pants. Shorts/pants should fit appropriately (no tight shorts/pants). Pants/shorts should be plain and not have any writing across the bottom. Shorts for both males and females must be at least fingertip length. Appropriate fit/length will be at the discretion of the teaching staff. Dress to the 9s (Professional Dress) On the 9 th of every month students will have the opportunity to dress professionally. Male professional dress includes the following combinations: o Button down shirt, tie, dress pants, dress socks, dress shoes, and a belt o Cardigan, button down dress shirt, tie, dress pants, dress socks, dress shoes, and a belt o Sweater, button down dress shirt, dress pants, dress socks, dress shoes, and a belt o Blazer, button down dress shirt, tie, dress pants, dress socks, dress shoes, and a belt o Suit, button down dress shirt, tie, dress pants, dress socks, dress shoes, and a belt Female professional dress include the following combinations:
6 KIPP DELTA PUBLIC SCHOOLS 6 o Dress (must be finger length to the leg and cannot be sleeveless), no more than three inch closed toe heels, with accessories (see KBC definition of flashy for accessories) Dresses can be worn with or without a blazer based on sleeves o Skirt (must be finger length to the leg), blouse (cannot be sleeveless), no more than three inch closed toe heels, with accessories (see KBC definition of flashy for accessories) Blouses can be worn with or without a blazer based on sleeves o Trousers, blouse (cannot be sleeveless), no more than three inch closed toe heels, with accessories (see KBC definition of flashy for accessories) Blouses can be worn with or without a blazer based on sleeves o Pant suit with no more than three inch closed toe heels o Length of attire (dress or blouse) with leggings Dresses or skirts that are worn with leggings must still meet the finger length to leg requirement. Failure to fully comply with the dress code will result in consequences which may include loss of detention, parent contact, removal from classes for the day, free dress or jean day privileges, and parent conferences. Willful and persistent failure to follow the dress code will be treated as a disciplinary matter. Modifications to the dress code may occur at the discretion of the School Director and will be communicated to students and families alike.
