A new law has come into force in South Korea that effectively bans the wearing of miniskirts. The controversial piece of legislation is called the "overexposure law" and is an attempt by the government to curb what it views as public indecency. Anyone caught wearing a miniskirt could be fined around $45. It is one of the first laws to be passed by new president Park Geun-hye and has come under considerable criticism. Her father, Park Chung-hee, who led the country between 1963 and 1979, introduced a similar decree on the appropriateness of what Korean women could and couldn't wear. A spokesperson from South Korea's police said the law is more concerned with public nudity than provocative clothing. Celebrities and politicians are up in arms over the new law. Democratic United Party member Ki Sik Kim wrote on Twitter: "Why does the state interfere with how citizens dress? Park Geun-hye's government gives cause for concern that we are returning to the era when hair length and skirt length were regulated." Many female celebrities have posted photos of themselves in skimpy clothing online to make their feelings against the law known. Short skirts and shorts are extremely popular in South Korea. They are the fashion items of choice for the majority of the country's pop stars. Singer and fashion icon Lee Hyori tweeted: "Is the overexposure fine for real? I'm so dead." The new fragrance will be in 50-ml bottles and will have a price tag of $45 dollars. D&G is the latest fashion house to make a perfume for infants. A D&G spokesperson said the new scent is, 'designed to cuddle and pamper every little boy and girl'. D&G boss Stefano Gabbana asked people on the website Instagram: "How can babies smell even sweeter than they already do?" His answer is a mix of honey, melon, orange and some secret ingredients. Gabbana explained how he made the fragrance. He said it smells like, "The softness of baby skin, the freshness of baby breath, a mother's sweet hug, and the first smile." While the new fragrance will increase D&G's profits, childcare experts are questioning the need for babies to wear perfume. They also hope parents will use their common sense. Baby doctor Sandy Tomkins said a baby's skin is very delicate and sensitive. She warned that any product used on it must be 100% safe. She added: "The last thing a mother wants is for her little one to smell nice but then have a nasty red rash." Skin doctor Jose Fernandez warned of soreness and irritation. Many people might agree with Britain's Daily Mail newspaper that babies already smell sweet enough. It wrote: "The smell of a freshly washed baby is universally understood as one of the sweetest scents in the world." Source: Wearing make-up Pagina 11

ToughLove.mp3 Gareth: Are you happy about it? Now, like looking back are you glad she did? Rebecca: It was tough love. At the time I hated her and I was getting picked on a lot at school about it, cause I just didn't realize that as a female you have to do these certain things. It was like, this is what acceptable in the community. You have to do this, so I was like I didn't realize it cause I always played with the boys, and none of them did this crap. I was like, why do we have to worry about that? Gareth: It sounds really sort of old-fashioned doesn't it? Rebecca: Yeah, but I was actually, you know now thinking about it, I'm happy that she did cause it brought it home to me that to a certain degree you do have to at least live with what your community accepts as standards, like if you what walk outside, you know the community accepts that you have to wear, you know, wear a shirt when you go outside. You can't go out topless. You probably should wear the shirt or you'll get looked at funny. Gareth: So, if I don't want my daughter to wear make-up, I should actually buy her some make-up and force her to wear it, so she'll do the exact opposite. Rebecca: I have heard that children do tend to do exactly their parents tell them not to do. I just -- I don't know. I didn't want to wear make-up, so my mom was concerned. I know a lot of people though who have had the opposite problem, like when they're younger, like they're maybe seven or eight and they want to wear make-up because mommy does, and you know, I had a lot of friends who would play dress up. They would sneak into mom's closet and steal all her dresses and her high heels, and steal all her make-up and you know, play dress up. At a certain age it was cute, but my cousin actually was one of them, and she would wear make-up. She was --- to school. She was only in elementary school, so Gareth: Wow, that's pretty young. Rebecca: Yeah, there was a lot of anger about that from the teachers and it was not all acceptable so I don't really know when the correct age is to wear make-up but I think at least if Pagina 13

15 they're more mature or more adult like, I guess maybe it's alright once they become -- no longer little girls anymore, then maybe you can let them wear make-up if they want. Gareth: Well, cheers! Thanks for the advice and I'll use it wisely. Rebecca: You're welcome. Source: Movember You are going to listen a conversation between Todd and Jeff. They are talking about Movember. Meanwhile you read the audio script. Movember1.mp3 Todd: Jeff, I noticed you're sporting a very nice look. Nice little mustache you got going there. Jeff: Yeah, this month... I don't usually have mustaches. I find them... only certain men can wear a mustache and look good. I'm not one of those men. I look horrible in a mustache, but it's November and every year countries like Australia and New Zealand, American and Canada, and especially England have a charity gig called Movember, and it's to raise money for prostate cancer. So in English a nickname for a mustache is a Mo, so November they change the beginning to make it Movember, so all the men must grow a mo or a mustache during November and get donations for prostate cancer, so how it works is that at the beginning of the month, November 1st, you must shave your face clean, and then you start to grow a mustache. Any style you want. A big swirly one, or a little short, zip across the top lip or a big bushy mustache or handlebar or whatever, and you must grow it for the entire month, and then at the end of the month, you send in your photo to the local contest organization and they choose the best mustaches and you win a prize, and then all the donations, all the money Pagina 15

17 that's raised goes to prostate cancer for men. It's like the pink ribbon campaign for breast cancer for women. Todd: That's fantastic. Jeff: It's very good but I have to go around looking like a moron for a month of November cause I don't look very good with a mustache. Todd: Actually, I think you look pretty good. I like your look. Jeff: It matches my hairstyle which is not so good either so it's a good match. Todd: So you haven't shaved since the first of the month? It's taken you a month to grow that mustache? Jeff: That's right. It's a mustache. I shave the rest of my face but you leave a mustache, so yeah, you can't have any other facial hair. You can't have sideburns or a goatee. It must be mustache only, and you shave your face all except your mustache. Todd: Oh, I see. So how do you get money for this? Jeff: You raise money through donations. You ask your friends and family to sponsor you but, where I'm living right now it's a very foreign concept. They don't know about Movember, so it's hard to get money cause you have to explain what you're doing and they don't really understand, so they're a bit skeptical. Maybe they think you're just trying to get beer money from them. Todd: How much have you raised so far? Jeff: I've got fifty dollars so far. Todd: Fifty! Jeff: Yeah, fifty. Todd: That's not bad. I'll throw in some. How about I throw in another twenty. Jeff: You give me ten and you promise to grow a mustache next year, and we're even. Todd: OK, that sounds like a deal. 10 Bucks and I grow a mustache. Source: How jeans are made How jeans are made You are going to watch a video about the process of making jeans. Wool taken directly from the sheep is called "raw" or "grease wool." It contains sand, dirt, grease, and dried sweat (called suint); the weight of contaminants accounts for about 30 to 70 percent of the fleece's total weight. To remove these contaminants, the wool is scoured in a series of alkaline baths containing water, soap, and soda ash or a similar alkali. The byproducts from this process (such as lanolin) are saved and used in a variety of household products. Pagina 21

After weaving, both worsteds and woolens undergo a series of finishing procedures including: fulling (immersing the fabric in water to make the fibers interlock); crabbing (permanently setting the interlock); decating (shrink-proofing); and, occasionally, dyeing. Although wool fibers can be dyed before the carding process, dyeing can also be done after the wool has been woven into fabric. a. Finishing a. Weaving a. Carding 3 Choose the correct heading for this part of the text about wool making. Sheep are sheared once a year usually in the springtime. A veteran shearer can shear up to two hundred sheep per day. The fleece recovered from a sheep can weigh between 6 and 18 pounds (2.7 and 8.1 kilograms); as much as possible, the fleece is kept in one piece. While most sheep are still sheared by hand, new technologies have been developed that use computers and sensitive, robot-controlled arms to do the clipping. a. Shearing a. Carding a. Cleaning and scouring 4 Choose the correct heading for this part of the text about wool making. Next, the wool yarn is woven into fabric. Wool manufacturers use two basic weaves: the plain weave and the twill. Woolen yarns are made into fabric using a plain weave (rarely a twill), which produces a fabric of a somewhat looser weave and a soft surface (due to napping) with little or no luster. The napping often conceals flaws in construction. Worsted yarns can create fine fabrics with exquisite patterns using a twill weave. The result is a more tightly woven, smooth fabric. Better constructed, worsteds are more durable than woolens and therefore more costly. a. Weaving a. Grading and sorting a. Spinning 5 Choose the correct heading for this part of the text about wool making. Pagina 22

24 Thread is formed by spinning the fibers together to form one strand of yarn; the strand is spun with two, three, or four other strands. Since the fibers cling and stick to one another, it is fairly easy to join, extend, and spin wool into yarn. Spinning for woolen yarns is typically done on a mule spinning machine, while worsted yarns can be spun on any number of spinning machines. After the yarn is spun, it is wrapped around bobbins, cones, or commercial drums. a. Spinning a. Finishing a. Weaving 6 Choose the correct heading for this part of the text about wool making. Next, the fibers are passed through a series of metal teeth that straighten and blend them into slivers. Carding also removes residual dirt and other matter left in the fibers. Carded wool intended for worsted yarn is put through gilling and combing, two procedures that remove short fibers and place the longer fibers parallel to each other. From there, the sleeker slivers are compacted and thinned through a process called drawing. Carded wool to be used for woolen yarn is sent directly for spinning. a. Carding a. Grading and sorting a. Weaving 7 Choose the correct heading for this part of the text about wool making. Grading is the breaking up of the fleece based on overall quality. In sorting, the wool is broken up into sections of different quality fibers, from different parts of the body. The best quality of wool comes from the shoulders and sides of the sheep and is used for clothing; the lesser quality comes from the lower legs and is used to make rugs. In wool grading, high quality does not always mean high durability. a. Grading and sorting a. Cleaning and scouring a. Finishing Lees de vragen. 1. What is used in hand cremes? 2. The fleece recovered from a sheep can weigh between 6 and 18 pounds (2.7 and 8.1 kilograms); as much as possible, the fleece is kept in one piece. While most sheep are still sheared by hand, new technologies have been developed that use computers and sensitive, robot-controlled arms to do the clipping. a. Shearing a. Carding a. Spinning Pagina 26

28 5 Choose the correct heading for this part of the text about wool making. Thread is formed by spinning the fibers together to form one strand of yarn; the strand is spun with two, three, or four other strands. 2. You are going to read a text about fashion. The question is: What is fashion? Read the text and find out. First read the text. Study the vocabulary. Do the exercises. Read the text. The big fashion houses lead the way in new trends It's not that easy to answer the question, "what is fashion?" because it means different things to different people. Fashion is an art. It's a religion. It's a job. It's a peek into a personality. It's playfulness. It's an escape or a disguise. It is a feast for the eyes. But ultimately, fashion is an individual statement of expression for each of us. French fashion designer Coco Chanel once said, "Fashion is not something that exists in dresses only. Fashion is in the sky, in the street, fashion has to do with ideas, the way we live, what is happening. "It's true. Fashion isn't defined solely by our clothing choices, but is also conveyed through the way we carry ourselves, our personalities and our views of the world. At its most fundamental (and straight from the dictionary), fashion is simply the prevailing style or custom, as in dress or behavior. So, who exactly answers the question "what is fashion"? Who decides what's fashionable and what isn't? What's in or what's out? Fashion Designers - The iconic fashion houses - Prada, Gucci, Chanel - are referred to as haute couture, French for "high sewing." These designers lead the way in creating trend-setting fashion. While some of their designs are outrageous and completely unrealistic when it comes to everyday wear, generally the theme is adapted into versions suitable for wearing. Pagina 30

32 Media - Fashion trends are often sparked by characters on popular television shows and movies as well as adopted from magazine pages. "Sex and the City," "The Devil Wears Prada," these shows introduced us to new, cutting-edge designs. While you might not be caught dead wearing a Carrie Bradshaw original, you might take ideas inspired from her look and piece together your own creation. Celebrities - A prime example of a celebrity-driven fashion trend? UGGs. Until Kate Hudson and Jessica Simpson were spotted wearing them around L.A. several years ago, no one had given any thought to UGG boots. Now they are everywhere. Musicians - Musicians have always been very influential when it comes to dictating fashion. Rock 'n' roll IS fashion. Elvis is an iconic example. In the 1950s, everyone wanted to dress like Elvis. What about the heavy metal hair bands so popular in the 1980s? Axl Rose reinvented the head bandana while Poison, Motley Crue and Bon Jovi set the pace for big, rocker hair. Just because you don't know if a Prada bag is fall 2007 or spring 2008 doesn't matter (unless you work in the fashion industry, of course). All that matters is that you like it and it's an expression of you. THAT IS fashion. Source: What is fashion? - Vocabulary Look at the vocabularylist Reading - What is fashion. A tattoo is an image which is permanently marked on the skin and is created by inserting ink under the skin. The word tattoo was introduced into English from the Polynesian languages of the Pacific region. English sailors first encountered the word and the practice during their ocean voyages in the 18th century. Tattooing has an ancient history that may go back to the New Stone Age which began about ten thousand years ago. Otzi the Iceman, a perfectly preserved human body dating back approximately five and a half thousand years, had 57 small dots tattooed on his body. Tattooing in Japan goes back even further and tattoos were common throughout Europe in pre-christian times according to historical accounts. In some tribal societies, tattoos were created by cutting designs into the skin and then rubbing ink or ashes into the wound. Some cultures followed a process of tapping the ink into the skin with sharpened sticks or bones, or more recently, metal needles. Nowadays, electric tattoo machines are the most common method of inserting ink into the skin layers. People have tattoos for many reasons: for body beautification or as a fashion statement, for religious purposes, to mark important stages in life or to display membership of Pagina 34

36 a group. Tattoos have negative associations in many cultures and are often linked to criminality. In Japan full body tattoos are associated with organised crime groups called Yakuza, and in the U.S., prisoners and criminals use distinctive tattoos to indicate criminal behaviour. For example, tear drops tattooed on the face show how many people a person has murdered. In some cultures, the practice of tattooing virtually died out when the country was colonised. In recent times, indigenous people have begun to re-claim their rights by returning to their old customs. An example is New Zealand where the traditional Maori art of tattoo is undergoing a revival. In recent decades, tattoos have become a popular part of global fashion. The practice is common among men and women, all economic groups and age groups ranging from teens to middle age. Pop stars and famous sports people proudly display tattoos. It is not impossible to remove a tattoo but it is difficult and expensive. The removal process can be painful and often only partially successful. The best advice is to be absolutely sure that you love your design. You will probably have it for life. Silk You are going to read a text about the invention and trade of silk. First read the text. Study the vocabulary. Do the exercise. Read the text. According to legend, the Chinese Empress Leizu, wife of the mythical Yellow Emperor, discovered silk around 2500 BC. In one account, Leizu was drinking tea under a mulberry tree when a silkworm cocoon dropped into her tea cup. In the hot liquid, a fine silk thread separated from the cocoon and Leizu started to unwrap the thread and wind it around her finger. Leizu realised the significance of her discovery and persuaded her husband to allow her to plant the mulberry trees that the silkworms lived on. The cultivation of silk had begun. Leizu is also credited with inventing the loom used to weave the silk thread into the fine smooth cloth known as silk. Whether the legend is true or not, historians believe that China was the first civilisation to manufacture silk, and Leizu is still referred to as Silk Mother in China. Originally, silk was reserved for the exclusive use of the Emperor and his family, but gradually the use of silk spread throughout the length of China and to all sections of the population. Even the common people wore silk for special occasions. Pagina 38

40 As Chinese merchants began to trade silk outside China, demand grew rapidly, and silk was traded across India, the Middle East, North Africa and Europe. For centuries, the Emperors of China attempted to maintain a trade monopoly on silk by keeping methods of silk cultivation a secret. However, by the first century AD China s dominance was broken and countries as far away as India began to cultivate silk. Silk was highly sought after and as the trade in silk expanded, a network of interlinking routes was established across the countries between China and Europe. This network was known as the Silk Road. Silk was not the only thing that was traded on the Silk Road. Each country contributed its own specialities. India, for example, traded elephant ivory, textiles and spices, and the Roman Empire traded gold, silver, glass and wine. Possibly one of the most important commodities to travel along the Silk Road was religion. Indian monks brought Buddhism to China. Later Christianity, which had been prohibited in Europe by the Romans, reached China via the Silk Road. Today, despite the invention of artificial fibres and the popularity of other natural materials such as cotton, silk is still regarded as a superior textile and China remains the major silk producing country in the world. It took the title from London, which won the accolade in 2011 and 2012, but finished third this year, behind Paris. Los Angeles was voted the fourth trendiest metropolis, while Barcelona closely followed in fifth place. Italy's highest-placed city was Rome, in sixth place. Milan, long established as a centre of style and the winner in 2009, finished in twelfth place. Bekka Payack, a New York-based fashion director, told reporters: "New York City has, indeed, earned its Top Global Fashion Capital ranking through its disciplined, methodical yet creative approach to its fashion industry." New York being crowned as the place to be seen coincides with the city's upcoming Fashion Week. The fashion world will descend on the city for a week of glitz and glamour. Top supermodels will set the catwalks alight and parade the latest fashions from leading designers. Ms Payack spoke of how newly-emerging cities around the world are making a name for themselves in haute couture. She said: "This year's rankings also demonstrate the creative energy that is emerging worldwide in terms of fashion as a jobs, income and wealth generator, not to mention the prestige associated with exporting your fashion sense to the world." Cities like Shanghai, St. Petersburg and New Delhi all fared well in the contest. Source: Pagina 42

44 Researchers at the Harvard Business School claim that people who do not follow "normal fashion" get more respect from others. Doctoral student Silvia Bellezza and two of her colleagues examined how we view the social status and competence of people who do not conform to "normal" ways of dressing. They discovered that the more outlandishly people dress, the more respect they get. Participants in the research considered others who had a "weirder" fashion to be more unique. Researchers said that rather than think badly of someone scruffily dressed, many people believe that dressing down is a sign of confidence. Ms Bellezza said: "If you're willing to deviate, there are upsides." Bellezza conducted a number of experiments to test how people reacted to non-conformity. In one, people in different types of clothes shopped at expensive boutiques in Milan. One group wore casual sports clothes, while the other donned expensive-looking outfits. The sales assistants assumed the ones in the sports gear were the bigger spenders. In another test, students rated an unshaven, T-shirt-clad professor above an academic wearing a suit and tie. Bellezza says high-profile entrepreneurs who dress down may be responsible for changing our perceptions. In particular, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg's wearing of hoodies and the late Steve Jobs' trademark jeans, sneakers and polo neck tops. Source: Fashion - Vocabulary Pagina 43

51 organ damage reshaping feet the detachable collar the undergarment to succumb to to suffocate vanity insanity Read the text. Fashion victims: History s most dangerous trends By Fiona Macdonald 24 June 2015 Giving new meaning to the phrase fashion victim, a 35-year-old Australian woman had to be cut out of a pair of skinny jeans after developing a condition called compartment syndrome. It s not the first time someone has succumbed to a dangerous style trend: They ve always been around, since the Stone Ages, says Summer Strevens, the author of Fashionably Fatal. It s when fashion is taken to an extreme; I call it vanity insanity. Here are three of the deadliest fads in history. Corsets The undergarment that shrank waistlines long before Spanx had an influence on language as much as women s bodies: it spawned the term strait-laced, lending a Victorian respectability to its wearer, as well as loose women implying that those who were corset-less had morals as free as their lacing. In her book, Strevens says that corsets caused indigestion, constipation, frequent fainting from difficulty in breathing and even internal bleeding inhibited breathing, giving rise to the Victorian heaving bosom, was indicative of pressure upon the lungs, while the other internal organs, forced to shift from their natural position to accommodate the new skeletal shape, were subject to damage. In 1874, a list was published attributing 97 diseases to corset wearing, including heightened hysteria and melancholy; between the late 1860s and the early 1890s, Strevens says, the medical journal The Lancet published at least an article a year on the medical dangers of tight lacing. And it didn t end with breathing difficulties or organ damage: in 1903, 42- year-old mother-of-six Mary Halliday died abruptly after a seizure. The New York Times reported that during her autopsy, two pieces of corset steel were found in her heart, their total length being eight and three-quarter inches. Where they rubbed together the ends were worn to a razor edge by the movement of her body. Stiff collars Invented in the 19th Century, the detachable collar meant men didn t have to change their shirt every day. It was also starched to a stiffness that proved lethal. They were called father killer, or Vatermörder in German, says Strevens. They could cut off the blood supply to the carotid artery. Edwardian men would wear them as a fashion accessory they d go to their gentleman s club, have a few glasses of port and nod off in a winged armchair, with their heads tilted forward. They actually suffocated. One 1888 obituary in The New York Times was headlined Choked by his collar : a man called John Cruetzi had been found dead in a park, and the Coroner thought the man had been drinking, seated himself on a bench, and fell asleep. His head dropped over on his chest and then his stiff collar stopped the windpipe and checked the flow of blood through the already contracted veins, causing the death to ensue from asphyxia and apoplexy. Killer heels Said to have been inspired by a 10th Century court dancer who wrapped her feet in silk to perform for the Emperor, Chinese foot-binding was officially banned in Yet some continued the Pagina 50

52 practice a means of displaying status, revealing that a woman didn t need her feet to work in secret. The British photographer Jo Farrell has documented the last surviving women with bound feet for her Living History project. She told the BBC: I feel so many people talk about how barbaric the tradition was, but it was also a tradition that empowered women. It gave them a better life one of the most important things that came across was that they have a pride in what happened to them. Reshaping feet is not restricted to China, however according to Strevens, in earlier centuries, ladies of fashion were known to have had their little toes amputated, slipping their feet into ever-more-pointed fashionable footwear. She argues that while historic practices might sound barbaric, women today are still enduring pain for fashion, referencing the contemporary vogue for the surgical shortening, even amputation of healthy toes, in order to fit into today's sky-high stilettos. There are still plenty of fashion victims in the 21st Century. Although we haven t got corsets any more, there are now people having their ribs removed to get a smaller waist. 2. 71 Researchers at the Harvard Business School claim that people who do not follow "normal fashion" get more respect from others. 78 Introduction Dit jaar doe jij eindexamen.
