School Uniform and Dress Code Dress Code Policy The P & C Association has resolved that it supports a student dress code policy for Shailer Park State Community School because it believes that a dress code policy promotes the objectives of the Education (General Provisions) Act 2006, and in particular that it: Promotes a safe environment for learning by enabling ready identification of students and non-students of the school; Promotes an effective teaching and learning environment by eliminating the distraction of competition in dress and fashion at the school; Promotes a supportive environment at the school by fostering a sense of belonging; and Fosters mutual respect among individuals at the school by minimising visible evidence of economic, class or social differences. The school uniform is as outlined below. All students require a day uniform for normal class activities as well as for excursions or community-development activities unless otherwise stipulated. In addition, students will require a sports uniform for sports and Health and Physical Education classes. Sports will be held for Year 8 and Year 9 on 6 set Round Robin days throughout the year and each Wednesday for Year 10, 11 and 12. Dress Standard The school uniform must be worn on all occasions, unless stipulated, and to and from school. Dress uniform is to be worn each Monday and when representing the school in public e.g. excursions, community development activities, unless stipulated. The sport uniform should be worn for sports day, training (e.g. academies), Health and Physical Education and Dance classes. Students are expected to dress at all times in a manner which promotes a positive image of the school and of themselves. For school events where free-dress is permitted, appropriate dress that does not compromise the school image and clothing that adheres to sun safe guidelines should be worn. Neatness and cleanliness is expected including hair below collar length tied back. Black leather laces up shoes are stipulated. Workplace Health and Safety considerations require that footwear provides adequate coverage to the foot - potentially hazardous situations such as workshops, laboratories, kitchens require that students wear leather footwear with leather uppers. The P & C Association has therefore determined that black leather school shoes or all black leather joggers should be worn. Students who participate in training before or after school or during school breaks must change back into their school uniform. On Monday, students who participate in training must change into their formal school uniform. Jewellery is to be kept to a minimum and must not detract from the overall neat and tidy presentation of the uniform. Students will be required to remove any items of jewellery

that interfere with learning or may pose potential risk of injury. Students may wear no more than two pairs of earrings - either studs or plain sleepers only, in ears. Facial piercings are not allowed under the code, this includes no clear facial piercings. A single watch is permissible. A maximum of one fine gold/silver bracelet and/or necklace, and/or ring may be worn. The single permitted necklace should not be visible. Students are required to remove jewellery (including body piercing) in any classes or activities where injury may be a concern - i.e. HPE, Manual Arts, Home Economics, Science, Dance, sporting activities such as swimming carnival (at the discretion of the teacher based on Workplace Health and Safety guidelines). Students who are deemed to be at risk due to WPH&S concerns will be referred to Administration. Teachers will confiscate unacceptable jewellery and provide for safe keeping to Administration for a period of time where collection can be arranged. Hair and nail colour must reflect a natural colour and must not compromise the school image. Dress Code Infringements Students not in full uniform must provide a note from a parent explaining the exceptional circumstances. An "out of uniform pass" will then be issued providing the student is not dressed in a manner that compromises school image or Workplace Health and Safety considerations. When a student is regularly out of uniform, parents will be contacted. Where possible and appropriate a uniform will be provided to the student who is expected to change into the supplied uniform. The uniform should be returned by the student at the finish of the same school day. The Responsible Behaviour Plan will be applied when a student is out of uniform if the student has not followed the procedure outlined above and/or is non-compliant with the uniform and dress code and/or does not provide a note from parents. Footwear Parents are advised that the school Dress Code provides for ALL black leather lace-up shoes being the ONLY suitable and acceptable footwear. Out enrolment agreement provides for committing to the dress code. Black and white or ANY other colour combination of school shoe regardless that they be leather and predominantly black is NOT acceptable. Jewellery, Piercings and Hairstyles must be limited to: A single fine necklace and no large pendants/symbols (MUST NOT BE VISIBLE). A single fine bracelet and/or signet ring. Fine sleepers or stud earrings (NO MORE THAN TWO PAIRS). A single watch. Hair below collar length must be neatly tied back. Hair and nails must be of natural-like colour. Facial piercings are NOT permitted (including no clear facial piercings).

Note: We regularly assist families by financial or other means to ensure uniform dress code consistency without causing undue stress or hardship. Breach of Dress Standards The school will work with families to assist where adherence to dress standard is difficult due to economic circumstances. Where situations occur of wilful non-adherence to the uniform dress code, the school will either/or Apply the Responsible Behaviour Plan Provide an alternative with parent consent Confiscate the item/or return it to the parent/carer Send the student home or into the care of the parent or nominated carer to substitute or acquire correct dress. Students seeking exception must have the legitimate support of a parent/carer and Provide reasons/explanation Receive support from the School s Care Team. The Principal will consider each instance as presented and determine a response consistent with EQ Policy and as provided in the Education (General Provisions) Act Safety and Dress Standard The School offers as part of its broad curriculum a range of wonderful opportunities for students to participate in hands-on learning. These include kitchens, science laboratories, workshops and sports activities. Student safety is foremost in our minds and we take every precaution as required by Queensland Workplace Health and Safety law to ensure that students are not placed at any unnecessary risk.

Risk assessments are undertaken seriously and the school has an obligation to ensure students who participate in activities where risk assessment is required of us are sufficiently protected by clothing and footwear suitable to the activity. Our school uniform and dress standard was arrived at in consultation with the school community where these safety standards were necessarily considered. Most activities can be enjoyed by students by simply wearing the school uniform as outlined in our dress code. Where problems occur and students are NOT able to participate in these hands-on activities, it is because they: Wear shoes that do not cover the whole foot and are not constructed of material sturdy enough to protect from spills, sharp or heavy objects or provide enough support for physical activity. This includes ballet-style shoes, canvas shoes, open toe shoes, thongs and similar footwear, and/or Do not wear the specialist protective equipment provided by the school in certain situations in laboratories and workshops. This includes protective eyewear, protective coats, or overalls. Students substituting who do not adhere to the dress code will be: Withdrawn from the activity/work environment concerned Required to either use substitute footwear provided as a temporary measure or have the parent/carer contacted for purpose of delivering to the school the appropriate footwear. Responsible behaviour plan will be followed where a student is non-compliant. This course is taken in the interests of Safety first and Engagement in learning without delay. We cannot reasonably be expected to accept risk or harm or injury to students where they would be exposed to such for the sake of fashion or willing non-compliance with the requirements of Workplace Health and Safety. We ask that parents/carers reinforce this important message to students and work with us to keep our students safe and enjoy the learning that these activities offer.

Behaviour and Consequences Student behaviour that does not comply with the expected standards is not acceptable. Consequences are applied to: Provide the opportunity for all students to learn. Ensure the safety of staff and students. Assist students who exhibit challenging behaviours to accept responsibility for themselves and their actions. Provide opportunity for students to reflect and adopt the support strategies put in place.
