2 Raising Awareness Endangered Species Art in Public Places David Dunleavy Worldwide is dedicated to promoting, preserving and propagating an awareness for endangered species and our threatened planet. Dunleavy s art encourages education and raises environmental awareness. These have been implemented through the use of larger than life wall murals, interactive art programs for children and community events. In 1995, Dunleavy painted his first international Endangered Species Murals at Walker s Cay Bahamas. To date, Dunleavy has completed 54 monumental, life-sized and larger than life murals depicting whales, whale sharks, marlins, sea turtles, bird life, bears and other wildlife. An estimated 500 million people a year view Dunleavy Endangered Species Murals. Dunleavy s goal is to complete over 100 Endangered Species Murals worldwide by the year The murals serve as a gateway to environmental learning and have helped reshape public awareness about preservation and conservation. The impact and attention these murals demand in communities is extraordinary, especially for anyone who has never seen a painting of a whale shark or turtle anywhere but in a book or seen on TV. Dunleavy is in partnership with The Oceans For Youth Foundation and his children s interactive arts program is helping students to become informed stewards of our planet. 3 Biography Dunleavy - An Artist for Our Wild Planet David Dunleavy is an American Artist, muralist, designer, and sculptor and has earned the distinction as a leading influential figure in conservation contemporary art. David Dunleavy was only fi ve years old when he and his older brother snuck into the movies to watch the classic shark tale, Jaws. While the movie single-handedly scared a generation of people out of the water, the film had the exact opposite effect on young Mr. Dunleavy. It was my first major inspiration, the well-known marine artist recalls. Every summer I would be in the water or near the water. Growing up near the Jersey Shore fishing and spending time boating with family, his taste for all things aquatic would serve him well as he refined his artistic talents. His passion for wildlife inspired him to create many early pencil and watercolor of fish and whitetail deer pieces that were the result of his exploring the Pennsylvania woods and the Jersey shore. When I m in the wild, it s like I m videotaping in my mind s eye to later go back to the studio to recreate all the beauty I see, he explains. As I watch the variety of creatures, it s like a constant painting unfolding in front of me. I can see what a future image is going to look like and that is what I reproduce when I paint. Today, Dunleavy s art work is sought by thousands of collectors worldwide and he works in all mediums acrylics, oils, watercolors, graphics and sculpture. He has many diverse styles. These styles range from marine wild life and tropical landscapes, to new age modern art. Dunleavy has successfully pioneered a new, innovative movement called Primal Art. Inspired by the etchings of prehistoric man, he uses elements of nature and pure pigments to create these distinctive fine art pieces. Dunleavy has achieved both critical acclaim and commercial success with his art. In addition to his well-publicized murals, his art can be seen in museum quality limited editions, embroidered and silk screened apparel, ceramic tile products and other gift products
