2 SFD Senior Instructor Daniel Faucher is the recipient of both the Bonwit Teller Award and the Designers Line Award. After graduating from SFD, Daniel began his career at North End Fabrics Harrison Textiles as a fabric buyer and store manager. In 1985, after working for several prestigious design firms in Boston and New York, Daniel began designing under his own label, Daniel Faucher Couture, creating special occasion apparel. Daniel is one of the few practitioners of couture dressmaking and creates one-of-a-kind ensembles for his clients in his South End atelier. His collections are seen routinely at the Ritz-Carlton, Boston Harbor, Four Seasons and Colonnade hotels in Boston, and have graced the pages of such publications as Women's Wear Daily, Boston Magazine, The Boston Globe, The Boston Herald and New England Bride. Daniel teaches pattern making, construction, and draping at all levels. Daniel tells his students, "everything in life is a learned skill, and putting in the time and effort is all that is required. Developing those skills happens over time, and everything can be learned." FGI Interview with President Dr. Denise Hammon Fashion Group International Boston chapter recently interviewed SFD's President Dr. Denise Hammon: What is your biggest accomplishment? I prefer to shine the spotlight on our students. Some of them begin with sewing experience, and some have no sewing experience when they walk through our front door. I admire them so much for their courage, hard work, and commitment to learning. My favorite showcase of student accomplishments is our May 11 fashion show, where SFD students of all levels present their work on the runway in our Newbury Street gallery. It's a fantastic evening, and I'm always impressed with the quality of work our students are producing under the instruction of our faculty. It's the next generation of Boston fashion emerging from SFD. Then of course there's our alumni, who are leaders in the fashion industry here and around the globe. Our alumni are working on Newbury Street, Adidas, Cirque du Soleil, PUMA, Ralph Lauren, TJX, Talbots, just to name a few. What's next for you and SFD? The thing I'm always most focused on is ensuring that our curriculum continues to keep in line with a rapidly changing fashion industry. SFD has been teaching apparel construction for over 80 years now, so a lot has changed! But we've always managed to keep our curriculum relevant. We added computer-aided design courses to our core curriculum when that became an industry standard. We offer sportswear classes, because it's a big industry in New England. We're paying attention to developments in textile science and smart fabrics. I'm

3 confident the fashion education we offer here at SFD is ready for whatever is coming next. How do you describe SFD's style? SFD is the only program in New England that focuses exclusively on apparel construction. This is traditional, and very hands-on, skills-based learning. For more than 80 years, we've remained true to our philosophy that a solid education in high quality garment construction is the foundation for everything else. This will always be at our core curriculum. Everything else, including our advanced levels classes and our electives, builds on that foundation. Five things you can't live without? Our extraordinary SFD faculty, maintaining small class sizes for personal attention, our Newbury Street location, our alumni community, and the incredibly generous people in the Boston fashion industry who support SFD scholarships and student programs. 9 Work by student Greg Palazzo in our Shoe Design course with instructor Michael Wyshak Introducing Martha Palaza to the SFD faculty We are pleased to announce that Martha Palaza will be joining the SFD faculty this Fall. Martha will teach construction and pattern making levels II and III. Martha holds a MFA, in Fashion Design from the Academy of Art University, San Francisco and a 2002 Junior Certificate in Fashion Design from the School of Fashion Design, Boston. Since 2002, she has taught college courses in pattern making, construction, and textiles as well as noncredit courses in fitting, silk painting and glove making. Currently, she is an instructor for the University of Fashion, an online fashion video library and freelance pattern maker at Palaza Designs.

We walked through her SFD portfolio - we loved these 70s sketches and final garment of this pant/dress convertible design from her SFD student days! Christy has enjoyed a long and fascinating career as a handbag designer. Check out her work at

11 Remembering SFD alum Marie Cosindas The School of Fashion Design remembers the life and work of alum Marie Cosindas.
