Concern is arising in and around Jorvik as there are reports of a number of attacks happening in the city. By all accounts less than 10 people appear to be responsible which suggests it is merely a 'Band of Thieves' and certainly not a 'War Band' that anyone should be afraid of. However, some unwary traders and travellers have taken a beating so look sharp and avoid travelling alone. WORTHLESS PENNINGR? Young Jarl Sigwulf and his Huscarls are currently investigating reports of Penningr forgeries around Jorvik. The forgeries are found to be made of much more base metal then would normally accompany the silver used. Any information on the whereabouts of the forgers will earn the favour of Jarl Sigwulf. WHAT A HEADACHE Varin warns one more time if folk are going to get rowdy and break furniture in his Ale Hall, then they should expect to suffer the consequences of a sore head the next day, whether it be from the ale or from his swinging fists! The Saga of Sigwulf Silver-Tongue Sigwulf Sølv-Tunge Sigwulfsson was born in the half-light of a rainy morning, 9th April 947 in Jorvik to a Danish mother and a Norwegian father of Rus descent. Sigwulf grew up in Jorvik learning Runic-Lore from his mother whilst learning to fight with

3 3 of 5 childhood friends Sigfus Leobasson, a fisherman by trade, sadly now missing and Varin, a jolly local brewer of ale. He had many siblings in his family but all were the result of different fathers, except the twins Börk and Skalla, who he didn t get on with particularly well. The eldest, Sigurd, was the brother whom Sigwulf disliked the most as he had always given him a hard time at home; he did not miss Sigurd when he left home and was glad to learn he had left the service of Emperor John I before his brother ventured out to join The Varangian (Oath) Guard. And this is the last we will speak of him. Ermingard was his older sister who he was very fond of as she had always looked after him and prevented Sigurd from being too mean. Ermingard married a Hiberno-Scandinavian Slave Trader from Ireland: Hrafn. Harek and Sigwulf always enjoyed each other s company and regularly went to hunt together. It was with Sigwulf s assistance that the young Harek killed his first wild boar. Treasured memories. Upon Sigwulf s return to Jorvik he learnt that Harek had become a successful butcher close to the King s longhouse. He is the youngest of the immediate family. One day he went missing. This was a terrible blow. Sigwulf left Jorvik having settled an argument with steel, over a disputed win during a game of Hnefatafl, aged 15. The family of the slain Helgi Thorkellsson were not quick to forget this deed thus Sigwulf left to try his hand at trading between Norway, Denmark and Sweden.
