2 1 EP B1 2 Description The present invention relates generally to crop harvesting machines, commonly referred to as combine harvesters, and, more particularly to so-called stone s traps fitted thereon for collecting stones and other hard foreign objects which may be entrained in the crop material fed to the threshing mechanism. Such stone traps permit easy removal of the trapped stones and other objects from the combine harvester. 10 When harvesting windrowed crops with a pick-up attachment mounted on the header of a combine harvester or when cutting the crops close to the ground surface with a direct-cut attachment, stones and other hard foreign objects inadvertently may be picked up and fed is to the threshing mechanism, which thereby is exposed to severe damage. To prevent these foreign objects from entering the threshing mechanism, combine harvesters commonly are equipped with a trough-shaped stone trap disposed between the threshing mechanism and 20 the normal crop elevator which conveys crop material from the crop gathering attachment to this threshing mechanism. Foreign objects which are fed towards the threshing mechanism are hit by threshing bars thereof and, as a result, are projected into the stone trap. 25 The crop elevator commonly is in the form of a feeder housing enclosing a chain-and-slat apron conveyor which entrains crop material and feeds the same rearwardly through a discharge opening of the feeder housing proximate to the threshing mechanism. The 30 stone trap thus is positioned with its inlet opening generally at the transition between said discharge opening and the threshing mechanism with the stone trap itself being positioned below the plane of that transition. In other words, as seen from the front of the combine, the 35 stone trap is positioned below the rearward end of the feeder housing. Details of a combine harvester equipped with a conventional stone trap can be taken a.o. from EP-A , the content of which is included herein by 40 reference. As can be seen from the aforementioned prior art document, the stone trap obstructs access from underneath the crop elevator to the grain pan; said grain pan being disposed beneath the threshing mechanism and 45 extending rearwardly into the machine from the vicinity of the rear wall of the stone trap for conveying threshed crop material, received from the threshing mechanism, to the cleaning mechanism for further processing. Dur- ing operation in wet crop conditions, dirt may accumu- so late on the surface of the grain pan and, when this occurs, cleaning of the grain pan becomes necessary. Access to the grain pan for removing accumulated dirt normally is possible only from the rear of the machine by reaching over the cleaning apparatus. This is a cliff i- 55 cult task and, as a consequence, there is substantial operator reluctance to carry out this grain pan cleaning as frequently as is required. In the stone trap arrangement according to EP-A , one may gain access to the grain pan from the forward end of the combine harvester after removal of the complete stone trap from the main frame. However, this is a cumbersome action as the weight of the stone trap requires the assistance of at least two persons, who have to crawl in the restrained area below the crop elevator and have to lower and lift this mass in a bent or kneeled position. Removal and reinstallation of the stone trap can be eased by prior removal of the crop elevator, but this operation requires a lifting device, such as a hoist or a crane and takes a considerable amount of time, such that it is not feasible for frequent cleaning of the grain pan. Access to the grain pan from the forward end of the machine at a location beneath the discharge end of the crop elevator is also possible in the arrangements according to CA-A , DE-A and DE- A by providing means which permit the grain pan or parts thereof to swing downwardly for servicing. However, this is a complicated and hence also an expensive solution. It is therefore an objective of the present invention to provide a simple and inexpensive solution which permits convenient access to the grain pan from a position in the vicinity of the inlet opening to the threshing mechanism, i.e. at the transition between the crop elevator and the threshing mechanism. This objective is accomplished by providing a combine harvester with a stone trap, having its upwardly facing inlet generally in the proximity of the transition between the discharge end of the crop elevator and the forward end of the threshing concave and comprising: a front wall in the form of a door which can be opened into a retracted position a.o. for emptying the stone trap; and a rear wall which is movably connected to said harvester and which, in an operative position, effectively closes the gap between the forward end of the threshing concave and the forward end of the grain pan. This combine harvester is characterized in that said rear wall is movable into a retracted, inoperative position providing access to said gap through the stone trap area while said rear wall remains connected to said harvester. In one embodiment of this invention, the stone trap rear wall is releasably attached to the combine framework at a position closing the gap between the forward end of the threshing concave and a frame member in the vicinity of the forward end of the grain pan. A flexible seal may be coupled at one end to this stone trap rear wall and at the other end to the forward edge of the grain pan in a manner to avoid interference with the conventional oscillatory movement of the grain pan while preventing the leaking of any crop material from the machine at this location. 2

3 3 EP B1 4 From what precedes, it will be appreciated that, when the stone trap access door is opened and furthermore the stone trap rear wall is detached from its mounting supports, access to the forward end of the grain pan from underneath the crop elevator is provided. 5 Said stone trap rear wall is removable from the combine harvester in case the flexible seal is not coupled to the stone trap rear wall. However, in case, as is preferred, the flexible seal is provided in the manner as has been described hereabove and the stone trap rear wall is dis- w connected from its mountings on the machine framework, this wall may be moved in a forward and downward direction until the seal prevents said wall to be displaced any further and until it rests on the stone trap door which is then placed in its opened position ; the 75 arrangement being so that both said door and said rear wall are clear of the forwardly facing access opening to the forward end of the grain pan at the location beneath the forward portion of the conventional threshing concave. 20 Alternatively, the stone trap rear wall may be hingeably mounted on the framework. Preferably, the hinges of the stone trap door and the stone trap rear wall extend coaxially and in the vicinity of the forward end of the grain pan. In this case, the stone trap door and the 25 stone trap rear wall both may be pivoted forwardly and downwardly into retracted, inoperative positions clear of the access to the grain pan forward end. Also, provisions may be made for positively holding the stone trap rear wall in its operative position when the stone trap 30 door is in its closing position and the arrangement may be so that no tools are needed for moving both the stone trap door and the stone trap rear wall into the retracted, inoperative positions. Again a flexible sealing member may be provided in 35 a manner to avoid interference with the conventional oscillatory movement of the grain pan while preventing leakage of crop material from the machine at the forward end of said grain pan. However, in this embodiment, the flexible sealing member preferably is coupled 40 to the aforementioned frame member in the vicinity of said hinge rather than to the stone trap rear wall. With either one of these extremely simple and inexpensive arrangements, a cleaning of the grain pan is possible from the front end thereof. Also, access to the 45 threshing mechanism and, in particular, the threshing concave is greatly facilitated which is useful for servicing the same. Access to the threshing cylinder is also improved in case the intake end of the threshing concave is coupled to the concave support means in a man- so ner which permits easy disassembly of this coupling; the arrangement being so that this concave intake end may be lowered onto the grain pan after it has been disconnected from said support means, thus providing said access to the threshing cylinder. 55 Access to the forward end of the grain pan and the threshing mechanism may be even further facilitated by disconnecting the crop elevator from the base unit as is conventional. However, as this is a rather cumbersome operation, it preferably should be avoided and the present invention makes this possible. Another problem which occasionally also is experienced with conventional stone traps is the failure of foreign objects, such as stones, to automatically drop out of the stone trap upon the opening of the discharge door thereof. The reason therefore may be the machine vibrations which cause the loose material in the stone trap to become densely compacted and stick together thereby preventing this material, inclusive the foreign objects therein, to fall out of the stone trap by gravity when the stone trap door is opened. Operation in wet crop conditions may have the same effect to the extent that, in these conditions, dirt and crop particles in the stone trap may form a muddy, sticky mass which equally fails to fall from the stone trap under influence of gravity when the stone trap door is moved to its dumping or discharge position. The stone trap door conventionally may be opened from the side of the combine harvester by means of any appropriate control means often including overcenter latching means. If the content of the stone trap fails to fall to the ground under gravity upon the opening of the stone trap door, the operator has to crawl underneath the crop elevator and to remove the stubborn content of the stone trap manually. However, as the stone trap, by its nature, is filled not only with foreign objects such as stones, but also with chaff, short pieces of straw and lots of dust, especially when harvesting crops in dry conditions, it readily will be appreciated that there is operator reluctance to remove the foreign objects manually from this awkward position underneath the feeder housing, knowing that, by doing this, a dusty and unhealthy atmosphere is created around the operator. The need for crawling underneath the feeder housing for either attending to the manual emptying of the stone trap or for manually correcting a failed automatic emptying of this stone trap, has been obviated by another aspect of the present invention. According to this aspect, a combine harvester is provided which comprises a stone trap having a door which is movable between an operative position for trapping foreign objects in the stone trap and a discharge position for dumping the content of the stone trap and which is characterized in that agitator means are coupled to this door and extend into the stone trap when said door is in said operative position and are displaced through said stone trap when the door is moved from its operative to its discharge position and vice versa to thereby assist in the discharge of the stone trap content. The agitator means may be in the form of a tube, an angle iron or other member which extends across at least a major portion of the stone trap and is hinged via a pair of arms at its opposite ends to mounting lugs on the inner face of the stone trap door. Preferably the rear wall of the stone trap is inclined and extends upwardly and rearwardly away from the lower edge of the stone trap at which location the stone trap door is pivotally mounted. In this arrangement, the 3

4 5 EP B1 6 agitator means are disposed to rest on the inclined rear wall generally in the vicinity of the upper edge thereof when the stone trap discharge door is in its operative, closed position and to slide downwardly along the surface of said rear wall when the door is moved to its dis- 5 charge position. This downward movement of the agitator means alongside the stone trap rear wall urges the content of the stone trap to exit from this stone trap. Should this not be sufficient to empty the stone trap, then the operator may open and close the stone trap w door repeatedly whereby the agitator means will ride up and down the stone trap rear wall. This movement of the agitator means back-and-forth along the surface of the rear wall of the stone trap loosens the material accumulated within the stone trap whereby this material ulti- 75 mately is caused to fall downwardly to the ground by gravity and this thus obviates the need for the operator to manually assist in the dumping of foreign material from the stone trap. Still another problem which is experienced from 20 time to time with combine harvesters having a conventional stone trap is leakage of grain which may occur at the seal between the stone trap front wall or door and the underside of the crop elevator. As is generally known, the crop elevator is mounted 25 for pivotal movement on the base unit of the combine harvester at a location generally above the stone trap inlet opening. Also, the stone trap conventionally is mounted with a front wall thereof in sealing engagement with a rear end portion of the crop elevator floor in a 30 manner which avoids interference with the pivotal movement of the crop elevator. This part of the stone trap which sealingly engages with the elevator floor may be a stone trap door which itself is pivotable between a closed, operative position and an open, discharge posi- 35 tion. In any event, the part of the stone trap which sealingly engages with the elevator floor, comprises at its upper edge a flexible sealing strip which resiliently engages with a curved surface of the underside of the crop elevator. The centre of curvature of this surface 40 conventionally is intended to generally coincide with the pivotal mounting of the crop elevator on the base unit of the combine harvester whereby the flexible sealing strip engaging said curved surface does not have to flex to any extent when the crop elevator is pivoted around its 45 pivotal mounting on the base unit. However, in practice, tolerances often are such that the aforementioned centre of curvature does not always perfectly coincides with said pivot axis and, depending on the size and the direction of the deviation, it may occur that upward pivotal so movement of the crop elevator is accompanied by grain and other crop material being urged, from within the stone trap, between the flexible strip and said curved surface. This ultimately results in this grain and other crop material leaking from the stone trap and thus being 55 lost. To understand this phenomenon, it must be appreciated that, during operation, the stone trap is completely filled with a.o. grain and other crop material and that, as a consequence, this grain and other crop material engages a.o. the aforementioned curved surface of the elevator floor at the nip between said curved surface and the flexible sealing strip engaging therewith. In case the centre of curvature of the aforementioned curved surface is positioned offset to the rear with respect to the pivot axis of the crop elevator, the upward pivotal movement of the crop elevator will effect a 'pumping' action on the material at this nip, which is directed outwardly through said nip. This, of course, results in the aforementioned leakage of grain which obviously is not acceptable. Accordingly, it is still another objective of the present invention to also overcome this problem and this is accomplished by a combine harvester having a stone trap of which a wall portion sealingly engages with a curved surface of the pivotally mounted crop elevator and which is characterized in that the centre of curvature of said curved surface is positioned in front of the pivotal mounting of the crop elevator on the base unit of the combine harvester. Preferably, the radius of curvature of said curved surface further also is larger than the distance from the pivot axis of the crop elevator to said curved surface. Also, the seal between the stone trap and the crop elevator floor is accomplished by means of a flexible sealing strip which, at one edge.is attached to the stone trap and resiliently and sealingly engages with its other edge said curved surface. A combine harvester in accordance with the present invention will now be described in greater detail, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which : Figure 1 is a schematic fore-and-aft sectional view of a combine harvester incorporating the present invention, Figure 2 is a fore-and-aft sectional view of the transitional area between the elevator housing and the threshing mechanism and including the stone trap provided generally at the forward end of the grain pan; the stone trap being shown in its closed, foreign objects trapping position, Figure 3 is a view similar to Figure 2 but showing the stone trap parts in positions permitting access to the grain pan from underneath the crop elevator, and Figures 4 and 5 are views similar to respectively Figures 2 and 3 but showing an alternative embodiment of the present invention. In the following description, terms such as "forward", "rearward", "left", "right", etc... are used, which are words of convenience and which are not to be construed as limiting terms. Referring now to the drawings and particularly to Figure 1, a crop harvesting machine 1, commonly referred to as a self-propelled combine harvester, can be seen. 4

5 7 EP B1 8 The combine base unit 2 comprises a wheeled frame or housing 3 mobilely supported on a front pair of traction wheels 5 and a rear pair of steerable wheels 6 for movement over a field to harvest crop material. Pivotally mounted to the front of the base unit 2 is a crop 5 elevator 10 including a feeder house 11 at the front end of which is mounted a crop harvesting header 17 of conventional design. In general, the header 17 includes a forwardly disposed reciprocating cutter bar (not shown) for severing 10 crop material from the stubble. A reel 18 is disposed above and forwardly of the cutter bar to sweep crop material thereover and transport it rearwardly to a consolidating auger 19 where it is converged centrally of the machine and then elevated to threshing and separating 15 means 21 by an elevator 12 of conventional construction in the feeder house 1 1. Basically, the threshing part 22 of the threshing and separating means 21 consists of a threshing cylinder 23 and a straw beater 29, each provided with respective cooperating concave means and 30, and the separating part 31 of said threshing and separating means 21 comprises a separator drum 32 together with an associated separator concave 33 as well as a set of longitudinally extending straw walkers 34. Most of the grain is separated from the straw by the 25 threshing cylinder 23 and associated concave means 24. Crop material issuing from between the threshing cylinder 23 and concave 24 is subjected to the action of the straw beater 29 and passes therefrom to the separator drum 32 and associated concave 33 and furtheron 30 to the straw walkers 34, all of which effect further separation of grain from the remainder of the crop material. Wanted grain together with chaff material, which is separated through the concave means 24, 30 and 33, falls onto a grain pan 36 and is transported towards a 35 cleaning apparatus 41 comprising sieve means 42 and a cleaning fan 43. Wanted grain together with chaff material, which is separated in the straw walkers 34, falls directly onto the cleaning apparatus 41. The grain pan 36 and the sieve means 42 are oscillated generally 40 back-and-forth for moving the threshed and separated material therealong while permitting the passage of cleaned grain by gravity through the sieves 42. The material on the sieve means 42 is subjected to a cleaning action by the fan 43 which serves to blow air through 45 said sieve means 42 in order to remove the chaff and other impurities, such as dust, from the grain by making this discardable material airborne for discharge from the machine. Clean grain is collected underneath the sieve means 42 from where it subsequently is transferred to a so grain tank 46 on top of the combine base unit 2. With reference to Figures 2 and 3, the configuration of the crop elevator 10 and the threshing means 22 will now be described in further details. Typically, the elevator 12 in the feeder house 11 is in the form of an endless ss apron conveyor comprising transverse slats and is driven by a drive shaft 13 positioned adjacent the rearward (upper discharge) end of the feeder house 1 1 ; the sense of rotation being so that the conveyor 12 operates in an undershot manner, i.e. crop material engaged thereby is conveyed upwardly inbetween the underside of the apron conveyor 12 and a bottom plate 14 of the feeder house 11. The orientation of the feeder house 1 1 relative to the combine base unit 2 and hence, also the height of the header 17 relative to the ground, is controlled by a pair of hydraulic lift cylinders 20 interconnecting the feeder house 1 1 and the base unit 2. The threshing means 22 are provided rearwardly of the elevator housing discharge end 15 and the threshing cylinder 23 thereof comprises flanges 25 upon which rasp bars 26 are mounted. Viewing now the transition area 49 between the crop elevator 10 and the threshing means 22, a stone trap 50 in accordance with the present invention is provided with its inlet 51 generally beneath this area 49 to collect and store stones and other hard, foreign objects which accidentally are picked up by the header 17 and fed rearwardly in the direction toward the threshing and separating mechanism 21. During operation, the layer of crop material passes directly from the crop elevator discharge end 15 through the transition area 49 to the intake nip 27 between the threshing cylinder 23 and the associated concave 24 and thus bridges over the stone trap inlet 51. Any hard, foreign objects in excess of a minimum size in the crop layer are hit by any one of the rasp bars 26 of the threshing cylinder 23 as they tend to enter said nip 27 and are deflected thereby into the stone trap 50 where they are collected for later discharge as is conventional. Still with reference to Figures 2 and 3, the construction and operation of a first embodiment of the stone trap 50 according to the present invention will now be described in more details. This stone trap 50 is generally triangular in cross section with the sides thereof being formed by respectively a fixed wall attached to a transverse beam 4 of the machine framework 3 and extending upwardly and reaching into the immediate vicinity of the threshing concave intake profile 28 thus effectively closing the gap 65 between the forward ends of respectively the threshing concave 24 and the grain pan 36, a front door 52 hingeably connected at its lower edge to a hinge 53 attached to said transverse beam 4 adjacent the corresponding lower edge of the rear wall 67 and the upwardly facing inlet 51 disposed generally beneath the aforementioned transition area 49. The stone trap 50 further also comprises transversely opposite, generally fore-and-aft extending end walls 68 which are fixedly connected to the rear wall 67. The stone trap door 52 is provided at its upper edge with a conventional, flexible seal 54 which is disposed to sealingly engage with a curved surface portion 16 of the elevator bottom wall 14 adjacent the elevator discharge end 15. Unlike in conventional combine harvesters, the centre of curvature of this surface portion 16 is situated in front of the pivotal mounting of the crop elevator 10 on the combine base unit 2 (coaxially with the shaft 13) and preferably, the radius of curvature is substantially larger 5

6 9 EP B1 10 than the distance from the elevator pivot axis to said curved surface 16. The stone trap front wall or door 52 can be opened and closed by means of an overcenter mechanism 57 comprising a handle 62 which extends to one side of the crop elevator 10 and which is connected to a transverse pivot shaft 61 to which also is connected an arm 60 which itself is pivotally connected via a link 59 to a lug 58 attached to the stone trap door 52. For closing the stone trap door 52, the handle 62 is lowered to the position shown in Figure 2 thus moving the mechanism 57 overcenter until a stop 63 on the pivot shaft 61 becomes operational. For opening the stone trap door 52, the handle 62 is pivoted upwardly whereby the mechanism 57 goes overcenter in the opposite direction and the door 52 is pivoted into the position shown in Figure 3. Agitator means 71 are connected to the stone trap door 52 and comprise a tube, angle iron or other member 72 which extends across at least a major portion of the transverse width of the stone trap 50 when the door 52 is in its closing position. Said agitator member 72 is hinged at its opposite ends via a pair of arms 73 to mounting lugs 74 provided on the inner face of the stone trap door 52 and, when said door 52 is in its closing position, said member 72 is supported on the stone trap rear wall 67 generally adjacent the upper edge thereof. As to this stone trap rear wall 67, it still should be noticed that, on the one hand, it is detachably mounted on the transverse beam 4 of the combine framework 3 via the intermediary of quickly releasable fasteners 64 and, on the other hand, a flexible seal 37 extends between this wall 67 and the leading edge of the grain pan 36 in a manner so as to avoid interference with the oscillatory movement of the latter during normal operation. During this normal operation, the various components are placed in the positions as shown in Figure 2 and the elevator may be pivoted as is required by the normal harvesting operation without any leakage occurring between the sealing 54 and the associated curved surface 16 of the elevator bottom wall 14. The operator may empty the stone trap 50 from the side of the elevator 10, i.e. without having to crawl underneath this elevator 10, by opening the door 52 thereof by means of the overcenter mechanism 57. As the door 52 is being opened, the agitator member 72 is caused to move downwardly along the stone trap rear wall 67 to thereby assist in discharging the stone trap content. However, should this action fail to empty the stone trap 50 completely at once, then, the operator may repeatedly open and close the stone trap front wall 52 to thereby move the agitator member 72 back-andforth through the stone trap 50 so as to ultimately remove the entire content thereof. Access to the area between the threshing concave 24 and the grain pan 36 therebelow is possible from underneath the elevator 10 after the stone trap door 52 has been opened, the agitator means 71 have been brought into the position shown in Figure 3 and the stone trap rear wall 67 has been detached from the frame member 4 and turned and displaced forwardly as far as permitted by the flexible seal 37. This front access greatly facilitates the servicing of the aforementioned 5 area such as e.g. a cleaning of the grain pan 36 and/or the threshing concave 24. This access may be even further improved by disconnecting the crop elevator 10 from the base unit 2 and such further improved access may be desirable when there is a need for a major serv- 10 icing of e.g. the threshing mechanism. However, the elevator normally needs not to be disconnected when e.g. a cleaning of the grain pan 36 is required. With reference to the Figures 4 and 5, an alternative embodiment of the present invention will now be 15 described. With respect to this embodiment, the same reference numbers are used for indicating those components which are either identical or similar to the corresponding components of the arrangement according to Figures 2 and As can be seen in the drawings, the stone trap rear wall 67 of this embodiment is pivotally mounted on the frame member 4 rather than being detachably connected thereto as is the case in the first embodiment. A flexible seal 69 may be provided at the upper edge of 25 the rear wall 67 to sealingly engage with the intake profile 28 of the threshing concave 24 while still permitting adjustment of this concave 24 relative to the threshing cylinder 23 as is conventional and as is illustrated in Figure 4 by means of showing the concave 24 in broken 30 lines in a lowered position. A latching pin 66 is slidably mounted on the stone trap rear wall 67 adjacent each one of its transverse edges in a manner to permit fixation of this rear wall 67 in its operative position by engaging these pins 66 with 35 appropriate holes (not shown) in adjacent frame members. Each pin 66 may have a handle 70 connected thereto to facilitate the latching of the rear wall 67 in its operative position. Alternatively or at the same time, each said handle may also be disposed so that its free end may be engaged by the stone trap door 52 when the latter is moved to its closing position and thus, in this case, said handles 70 effectively also are abutment members. With this arrangement, it is not necessary to actually 45 engage the pins 66 with the corresponding holes in the adjacent frame members (and thus these pins then may be mere pivots) in case said handles or abutment members 70 are dimensioned and positioned so that, with the stone trap door 52 in its closing position, the stone so trap rear wall 67 is held thereby against appropriate abutments (not shown) on the frame in its operative position. The abutment members 70 may be provided with appropriate stops which, in combination with gravity, place these members 70, when the rear wall 67 is in 55 its operative position, in the appropriate positions ready for engagement by the door 52 upon the closing thereof. On the other hand, when the rear wall 67 is pivoted towards its inoperative position shown in Figure 5, the 6

7 11 EP B1 12 members 70 pivot by gravity to the retracted position as is illustrated. The flexible seal 37 associated with the grain pan 36 extends between this grain pan 36 and the frame member 4 rather than the stone trap rear wall 67. As is conventional, a stone trap filler plate 80 may be used in situations where the stone trap 50 is not needed, i.e. when there exist no risks for solid, foreign objects to be picked up together with the crop material. This is the case when harvesting rice or corn. Such a filler plate 80 is intended to prevent material from entering the stone trap 50 when harvesting said crops. In the arrangement according to Figures 4 and 5, such a filler plate 80 is pivotally attached to the inner face of the stone trap door 52 in the same manner as the agitator means 71 are connected to the door 52 in the arrangement according to Figures 2 and 3. In other words, the free end of the filler plate 80 also is caused to move downwardly along the stone trap rear wall 67 when the door 52 is opened and, furthermore, said filler plate 80 also can be swung to the retracted, inoperative position shown in Figure 5 for improving the access to the area between the grain pan 36 and the threshing concave 24. Obviously, the filler plate 80 and the agitator means 71 need not and moreover also cannot be used at the same time. From what precedes and as can be taken from Figure 5, access from below the elevator 10 to the area above the forward end of the grain pan 36 is possible after the stone trap door 52, the filler plate 80, respectively the agitator means 71 and the stone trap rear wall 67 all are pivoted into their respective retracted, inoperative positions shown in Figure 5. As in the first embodiment, such access permits e.g. easy cleaning of the grain pan 36 and the concave 24 and, provided the concave 24 is connected at its transversely opposite forward ends to the conventional concave supporting mechanism (not shown) by couplings 81 which enable easy disassembly thereof, easy access is also provided to the threshing cylinder 23 in as much as said couplings 81 can be released to permit a lowering of the forward end of the concave 24 until it rests on the grain pan 36 and so that the intake nip 27 between the threshing cylinder 23 and the associated concave 24 is opened up in the direction of the area beneath the elevator 10. This access to the threshing cylinder 23 does not require the disconnection of the elevator 10 but, if the elevator 10 is nevertheless disconnected, access to the threshing cylinder 23 is even further improved. Claims 1. A combine harvester with a stone trap (50) having its upwardly facing inlet (51) generally in the proximity of the transition (49) between the discharge end (15) of the crop elevator (10) and the forward end of the threshing concave (24) and comprising: a front wall in the form of a door (52) which can be opened into a retracted position a.o. for emptying the stone trap (50) and a rear wall (67) which is movably connected to 5 said harvester and which, in an operative position, effectively closes the gap (65) between the forward end of the threshing concave (24) and the forward end of the grain pan (36); 10 characterized in that: said rear wall (67) is movable into a retracted, inoperative position providing access to said gap (65) through the stone trap area while said rear wall (67) remains connected to said harvester A combine harvester according to claim 1, characterized in that the stone trap rear wall (67) is releasably attached to the combine framework (3) at a position closing the gap between the forward end of 20 the threshing concave (24) and a frame member (4) in the vicinity of the forward end of the grain pan (36). 3. A combine harvester according to claim 2, charac- 25 terized in that a flexible seal (37) is attached at one of its edges to the stone trap rear wall (67) and at its opposite edge to the forward end of the grain pan (36) in a manner to avoid interference with the conventional oscillatory movement of the grain pan 30 (36); the arrangement being so that said flexible seal (37) determines the inoperative position of the stone trap rear wall (67) clear of the access to the gap (65) between the forward ends of respectively the threshing concave (24) and the grain pan (36) A combine harvester according to claim 1, characterized in that the stone trap rear wall (67) is hingeably mounted on the framework (3) A combine harvester according to claim 4, characterized in that the hinges of the stone trap door (52) and the stone trap rear wall (67) extend coaxially and in the vicinity of the forward end of the grain pan (36); the arrangement being so that both said 45 door (52) and said wall (67) are pivotable in a forward and downward direction into retracted positions clear of the access to the gap (65) between the forward ends of respectively the threshing concave (24) and the grain pan (36) A combine harvester according to claim 4 or 5, characterized in that latching means (66) are provided for latching the stone trap rear wall (67) in the operative position A combine harvester according to any of the claims 4 to 6, characterized in that stop means are provided on the framework (3) for the stone trap rear 7

A combine harvester according to claim 7, characterized in that abutment means (70) are connected s to the stone trap rear wall (67) for cooperation with the stone trap door (52) in a manner so that, when the stone trap door (52) is in its operative, closing position, said door (52) effectively holds the stone trap rear wall (67) in its operative position against 10 said stop means via the intermediary of said abutment means (70). 9. A combine harvester according to claim 8, characterized in that the abutment means (70) are hingea- 15 bly attached to the stone trap rear wall (67) and stop means are associated with the abutment means (70); the arrangement being so that, on the one hand and when the stone trap rear wall (67) is moved to its operative position, gravity causes the 20 abutment means (70) to move to an operative, abutment position which is determined by said stop means and, on the other hand and when the stone trap rear wall (67) is moved to its retracted position, gravity causes the abutment means (70) to also 25 move to a retracted, inoperative position A combine harvester according to any of the claims 4 to 9, characterized in that a flexible seal (37) is attached at one of its edges to a frame member (4) 30 in the vicinity of the hinge of the stone trap rear wall (67) and at its opposite edge to the forward end of the grain pan (36) in a manner to avoid interference with the conventional oscillatory movement of the grain pan (36) A combine harvester according to any of the preceding claims, characterized in that a filler plate (80) is hingeably attached to the inner face of the stone trap door (52) ; the arrangement being so that, 40 on the one hand and when the stone trap door (52) is in its closing position, said filler plate (80) generally covers the stone trap inlet (51) and, on the other hand and when the stone trap door (52) is in its retracted position, this filler plate (80) is also mova- 45 ble into a retracted, inoperative position clear of the access to the gap (65) between the forward ends of respectively the threshing concave (24) and the grain pan (36) A combine harvester according to any of the preceding claims, characterized in that an overcenter mechanism (57) is associated with the stone trap door (52) for controlling the position thereof A combine harvester according to any of the preceding claims, characterized in that agitator means (71) are coupled to the door (52) and extend into the stone trap (50) when said door (52) is in said operative position and are displaced through said stone trap (50) when the door (52) is moved from its operative to its discharge position and vice versa to thereby assist in the discharge of the stone trap content. 14. A combine harvester according to claim 13, characterized in that the agitator means (71) comprise an agitator member (72) which extends across at least a major portion of the stone trap (50) and is hinged via a pair of arms (73) at its opposite ends to mounting lugs (74) on the inner face of the stone trap door (52) A combine harvester according to claim 14, characterized in that : the stone trap rear wall (67) extends upwardly and rearwardly away from the lower edge of the stone trap (50) at which location the stone trap door (52) is pivotally mounted and the agitator means (71) rest on said rear wall (67) generally in the vicinity of the upper edge thereof when the stone trap door (52) is in its closing position and are movable along the inner surface thereof when the stone trap door (52) is moved to its discharge position A combine harvester according to any of the claims 13 to 15, characterized in that, when the stone trap door (52) is in its inoperative position, the agitator means (71) also are movable into an inoperative, retracted position clear of the access 17. A combine harvester according to any of the preceding claims and further having a stone trap (50) of which a wall portion (52) sealingly engages with a curved surface (16) of the pivotally mounted crop elevator (10) and characterized in that the centre of curvature of said curved surface (1 6) is positioned in front of the pivotal mounting of the crop elevator (1 0) on the base unit (2) of the combine harvester. 18. A combine harvester according to claim 17, characterized in that the radius of curvature of said curved surface (16) is larger than the distance from the pivot axis of said crop elevator (1 0) to said curved surface (16) A combine harvester according to claim 18, characterized in that said sealing between said stone trap wall portion (52) and said curved elevator wall portion (16) is accomplished by a flexible sealing strip (54) which, at one edge, is attached to said stone trap wall portion (52) and, at the opposite edge, resiliently and sealingly engages with said curved surface (16). 8

Mahdrescher mit einer Steinfangeinrichtung (50), deren nach oben gerichteter EinlaB (51) allgemein in der Nahe des Uberganges (49) zwischen dem AuslaBende (15) des Erntematerial-Schragforderers (1 0) und dem vorderen Ende des Dreschkorbes (24) liegt, und die eine Vorderwand in Form einer Klappe (52), die in eine zuriickgezogene Position u.a. zum Entleeren der Steinfangeinrichtung (50) geoffnet werden kann, und eine Rtickwand (67) umfabt, die beweglich mit ts dem Mahdrescher verbunden ist und die in einer Betriebsstellung effektiv den Spalt (65) zwischen dem vorderen Ende des Dreschkorbes (24) und dem vorderen Ende der Kornerwanne (36) verschliebt, 20 dadurch gekennzeichnet, dab die Rtickwand (67) in eine zuriickgezogene unwirksame Stellung beweglich ist, in der sie einen Zugang an den Spalt (65) durch den Steinfangeinrichtungs-Bereich hindurch 25 ergibt, wahrend diese Rtickwand (67) mit dem Mahdrescher verbunden bleibt. 2. Mahdrescher nach Anspruch 1, dadurch gekennzeichnet, dab die Rtickwand (67) 30 der Steinfangeinrichtung losbar an dem Rahmen (3) des Mahdreschers an einer Position befestigt ist, in der sie den Spalt zwischen dem vorderen Ende des Dreschkorbes (24) und einem Rahmenteil (4) in der Nahe des vorderen Endes der Korner- 35 wanne (36) verschliebt. 3. Mahdrescher nach Anspruch 2, dadurch gekennzeichnet, dab eine flexible Dichtung (37) mit ihrer einen Kante an der Rtickwand 40 (67) der Steinfangeinrichtung befestigt ist, wahrend ihre entgegengesetzte Kante an dem vorderen Ende der Kornerwanne (36) in einer derartigen Weise befestigt ist, dab eine Storung der ublichen Schwingungsbewegung der Kornerwanne (36) ver- 45 mieden wird, wobei die Anordnung derart ist, dab die flexible Dichtung (37) die unwirksame Stellung der Rtickwand (67) der Steinfangeinrichtung auberhalb des Zugangsbereiches an den Spalt (65) zwischen den vorderen Enden des Dreschkorbes (24) so bzw. der Kornerwanne (36) festlegt. 4. Mahdrescher nach Anspruch 1, dadurch gekennzeichnet, dab die Rtickwand (67) der Steinfangeinrichtung gelenkig an dem Rahmen (3) befestigt ist. 5. Mahdrescher nach Anspruch 4, dadurch gekennzeichnet, dab die Gelenke der s to ss Klappe (52) der Steinfangeinrichtung und der Rtickwand (67) der Steinfangeinrichtung sich koaxial zueinander und in der Nahe des vorderen Endes der Kornerwanne (36) erstrecken, wobei die Anordnung derart ist, dab sowohl die Klappe (52) als auch die Wand (67) in einer Vorwarts- und Abwartsrichtung in zuriickgezogene Stellungen verschwenkbar sind, in denen sie den Zugang an den Spalt (65) zwischen den vorderen Enden des Dreschkorbes (24) bzw. der Kornerwanne (36) freigeben. 6. Mahdrescher nach Anspruch 4 oder 5, dadurch gekennzeichnet, dab Verriegelungseinrichtungen (66) zur Verriegelung der Rtickwand (67) der Steinfangeinrichtung in der Betriebsstellung vorgesehen sind. 7. Mahdrescher nach einem der Ansprtiche 4 bis 6, dadurch gekennzeichnet, dab auf dem Rahmen (3) Anschlageinrichtungen fur die Rtickwand (67) der Steinfangeinrichtung vorgesehen sind, gegen die die Rtickwand zur Anlage kommt, wenn sie in ihre Betriebsstellung bewegt wird. 8. Mahdrescher nach Anspruch 7, dadurch gekennzeichnet, dab Absttitzeinrichtungen (70) mit der Rtickwand (67) der Steinfangeinrichtung fur ein Zusammenwirken mit der Klappe (52) der Steinfangeinrichtung in einer derartigen Weise verbunden sind, dab, wenn die Klappe (52) der Steinfangeinrichtung sich in ihrer betriebsmabigen SchlieBstellung befindet, diese Klappe (52) effektiv die Rtickwand (67) der Steinfangeinrichtung in ihrer Betriebsstellung gegen die Anschlageinrichtungen tiber die Absttitzeinrichtungen (70) halt. 9. Mahdrescher nach Anspruch 8, dadurch gekennzeichnet, dab die Absttitzeinrichtungen (70) gelenkig an der Rtickwand (67) der Steinfangeinrichtung befestigt sind und Anschlageinrichtungen mit den Absttitzeinrichtungen (70) verbunden sind, wobei die Anordnung derart ist, dab einerseits bei einer Bewegung der Rtickwand (67) der Steinfangeinrichtung in ihre Betriebsstellung die Schwerkraft eine Bewegung der Absttitzeinrichtungen (70) in eine betriebsmabige Absttitzstellung hervorruft, die durch die Anschlageinrichtungen bestimmt ist, und dab andererseits bei einer Bewegung der Rtickwand (67) der Steinfangeinrichtung in die zuriickgezogene Stellung die Schwerkraft dazu ftihrt, dab die Absttitzeinrichtungen (70) sich ebenfalls in eine zuriickgezogene Ruhestellung bewegen. 10. Mahdrescher nach einem der Ansprtiche 4 bis 9, dadurch gekennzeichnet, dab eine flexible Dichtung (37) mit ihrer einen Kante an einem Rahmen- 9

10 17 EP B1 18 teil (4) in der Nahe des Gelenkes der Rtickwand (67) der Steinfangeinrichtung befestigt ist, wahrend die entgegengesetzte Kante der Dichtung an dem vorderen Ende der Kornerwanne (36) derart befestigt ist, dab eine Storung der ublichen Schwingungsbewegung der Kornerwanne (36) vermieden wird. 11. Mahdrescher nach einem der vorhergehenden Ansprtiche, dadurch gekennzeichnet, dab eine Ftillplatte (80) gelenkig an der Innenflache der Klappe (52) der Steinfangeinrichtung befestigt ist, wobei die Anordnung derart ist, dab einerseits bei sich in ihrer SchlieBstellung befindlicher Klappe (52) der Steinfangeinrichtung die Ftillplatte (80) allgemein den EinlaB (51) der Steinfangeinrichtung abdeckt, wahrend andererseits bei sich in der zuruckgezogenen Stellung befindlicher Klappe (52) der Steinfangeinrichtung diese Ftillplatte (80) ebenfalls in eine zuriickgezogene Ruhestellung beweglich ist, in der sie den Zugang an den Spalt (65) zwischen den vorderen Enden des Dreschkorbes (24) bzw. der Kornerwanne (36) freigibt. 12. Mahdrescher nach einem der vorhergehenden Ansprtiche, dadurch gekennzeichnet, dab ein Endlagenmechanismus (57) mit der Klappe (52) der Steinfangeinrichtung verbunden ist, urn deren Position zu steuern. 13. Mahdrescher nach einem der vorhergehenden Ansprtiche, dadurch gekennzeichnet, dab Rtitteleinrichtungen (71) mit der Klappe (52) verbunden sind und sich in die Steinfangeinrichtung (50) erstrecken, wenn sich die Klappe (52) in der Betriebsstellung befindet, wahrend sie durch die Steinfangeinrichtung (50) hindurchbewegt werden, wenn die Klappe (52) von ihrer Betriebsstellung in die Auswurfstellung und umgekehrt bewegt wird, urn den Auswurf des Inhaltes der Steinfangeinrichtung zu untersttitzen. 14. Mahdrescher nach Anspruch 13, dadurch gekennzeichnet, dab die Rtitteleinrichtungen (71) ein Rtittel element (72) umfassen, das sich tiber zumindestens einen groberen Teil der Steinfangeinrichtung (50) erstreckt und an seinen entgegengesetzten Enden tiber zwei Arme (73) mit Befestigungslaschen (74) auf der Innenflache der Klappe (52) der Steinfangeinrichtung gelenkig verbunden ist. 15. Mahdrescher nach Anspruch 14, dadurch gekennzeichnet, dab: die Rtickwand (67) der Steinfangeinrichtung sich nach oben und in Rtickwartsrichtung von der Unterkante der Steinfangeinrichtung (50) fort erstreckt, wobei an dieser Stelle die Klappe (52) der Steinfangeinrichtung gelenkig befestigt ist, und 5 - die Rtitteleinrichtungen (71) auf der Rtickwand (67) allgemein in der Nahe von deren Unterkante aufliegen, wenn sich die Klappe (52) der Steinfangeinrichtung in ihrer SchlieBstellung befindet, und dab sie entlang der Innenoberfla- 10 che dieser Rtickwand beweglich sind, wenn die Klappe (52) der Steinfangeinrichtung in ihre Auswurfstellung bewegt wird. 16. Mahdrescher nach einem der Ansprtiche 13 bis 15, 15 dadurch gekennzeichnet, dab bei in ihrer unwirksamen Stellung befindlicher Klappe (52) der Steinfangeinrichtung die Rtitteleinrichtungen (71) ebenfalls in eine unwirksame zuriickgezogene Stellung bewegbar sind, in der sie den Zugang freige- 20 ben. 17. Mahdrescher nach einem der vorhergehenden Ansprtiche, der weiterhin eine Steinfangeinrichtung (50) aufweist, von der ein Wandabschnitt (52) in 25 Dichtungseingriff mit einer gekriimmten Oberf lache (16) des schwenkbar befestigten Erntematerial- Schragforderers (1 0) steht, dadurch gekennzeichnet, dab der Kriimmungsmittelpunkt der gekriimmten Oberf lache (16) vor der 30 Schwenkbefestigung des Erntematerial-Schragforderers (10) an der Grundeinheit (2) des Mahdreschers liegt. 18. Mahdrescher nach Anspruch 17, 35 dadurch gekennzeichnet, dab der Kriimmungsradius der gekriimmten Oberf lache (16) grober als der Abstand von der Schwenkachse des Erntematerial-Schragforderers (10) zu der gekriimmten Oberflache(16)ist Mahdrescher nach Anspruch 18, dadurch gekennzeichnet, dab die Dichtung zwischen dem Wandabschnitt (52) der Steinfangeinrichtung und dem gekriimmten Wandabschnitt (16) 45 des Schragforderers durch einen flexiblen Dichtungsstreifen (54) ausgebildet ist, der an einer Kante an dem Wandabschnitt (52) der Steinfangeinrichtung befestigt ist und an seiner entgegengesetzten Kante elastisch unter Abdichtung an der so gekriimmten Oberf lache (16) anliegt.
