8 INSPIRATION TO COLLECTION sautoir the Valora, Pendant, The sautoir is a long pendant or necklace made famous by the hem-raising, partyloving flappers of the Roaring Twenties. Designed in the 18th century to carry a cross or a watch, by the early 20th century it had become a symbol of women s freedom. The Jazz Age saw pioneers, such as Hollywood femme fatale Louise Brooks (top left: modeling a pearl sautoir in this 1928 portrait), throw off their corsets, experiment with androgyny, and enjoy the thrilling hedonism of newfound emancipation. The short flapper dress was perfect for dancing the Charleston and the sautoir its ideal accessory, gracefully following the movement of the body. With the return of control over women s body shapes in the Forties and Fifties, the sautoir disappeared, only to make a stronger comeback during the Feminist era of the Sixties and Seventies. The hippie culture favored ethnic-style ropes of beads, and vintage jewelry such as Art Deco was popularized by design icons Ossie Clarke and Biba, while the likes of actress and Je t aime singer, Jane Birkin (bottom, middle), rocked the era s just-out-of-bed glamour with soft, tasseled sautoirs.
