It s flamboyant and equally elegant. Its discovery in 1987 closed the gap between green and blue, and made the tourmaline the real rainbow stone as it s known. The Paraiba tourmaline is a star rarer than diamonds and appropriately valuable. Markus Paul Wild, CEO of Paul Wild in Kirschweiler, recognised the importance of the new gemstone early on: since 1996, his company has been managing a mine in the Brazilian state of Paraiba. When the Paraiba tourmaline was also discovered in Mozambique in 2009, he opened another mine there. Now we could find truly remarkable stones again, says Wild. This is why the Paraiba tourmaline is featured this year in our series The very best from our own mines. At Baselworld, this long-established enterprise is presenting the Paraiba as a gem and collectors stone in all shapes, cuts and sizes up to 150 carat. Because it s so rare, the Paraiba is both an extravagant and secure investment, explains Wild. The almost unreal, strongly luminous neon green, blue and turquoise of the Paraiba tourmaline create sensational effects. Motivation for the highly-qualified specialists at Paul Wild to process the valuable stones in continuously different ways: The facetted gemstones are classics, like an oval stone in fantastic ocean turquoise weighing almost 57 carats. All turquoise shades in the world are reflected in the facets of this oval 57-carat Paraiba. 03

4 Thalassa s necklace, named after the Greek sea goddess, is a real highlight: 17 delicate fish, starfish, mussels and snails gleam in all Paraiba shades; some of the engravings even exhibit two colours. Not only for mermaids: 17 extremely lively Paraiba engravings embellish Thalassa s necklace. It s still an insider tip, Markus Wild, CEO of the gemstone company Paul Wild in Kirschweiler, Germany, knows, but the Ethiopian opal is becoming a star. The long-established enterprise has been dealing with all high class gemstones for a long time, but so far did not carry any opals. However, the warm shades of the Ethiopian opals and their noticeably lively shimmering play of colours fascinated Markus Wild. So the company began processing these opals in 2012 and is now writing another success story: We had expected these wonderful stones to be well-accepted but we were surprised that the worldwide demand is so strong, says Wild. He is also expecting further price increases resulting from the rising demand. The play of colours of the Ethiopian opal ranges from delicate pastel through to strongly luminous neon. 6 While clear, single-coloured gemstones can be made to sparkle through reflecting facets, opalescent opals are cut classically to cabochons which come alive through their display of colours. Round shapes enhance the luminous play of colours of the Ethiopian opals most clearly. Moving spheres emphasize this effect. In this way, the seemingly sleek pearls of the 463 carat necklace give the impression of character and splendour without being overpowering. World Wild Stars is the name of the most exquisite stones and sets from Paul Wild, the longestablished gemstone company in Kirschweiler. At Baselworld 2015, Paul Wild is presenting the largest suite of demantoids in the world: 17 gems weighing a total of carats. The 15 round necklace stones in radiant, almost celestial green have a size of 11 to 14 millimetres and weigh between 6.27 and carats; the two oval earring stones in the same colour weigh carats together. The Russian demantoid is considered to be the stone of the czars the African one is the gem of the gods, says CEO Markus Paul Wild. As he explains: The Brandberg mountain in Namibia, close to where it is found, is called Omukuruwaro in Herero, meaning Mountain of the gods. Paul Wild operates its own mine here. Stones weighing more than two to three carats are also rare amongst African demantoids, and stones with a weight of more than eight carats are considered to be true rarities. To be able to put together a set of such large stones in exactly the same shade and of the best quality is a rare occurrence an absolutely unique piece of jewellery will be created from them, predicts Wild. 07

For a long time, especially high value coloured gemstones were only classically faceted or cut to a cabochon. A lot has changed here in a very short time, says Markus Paul Wild, CEO of the gemstone company Paul Wild in Kirschweiler, Germany. As an example, he mentions his Characters which are successful worldwide. Markus Wild, a qualified gemstone cutter and untiring experimenter, developed this cut in Characters retain the natural shape of the raw stone. Edges are carefully smoothed, indentations and protrusions highly polished. And so, absolute unique pieces come into being just like the people who wear these stones, explains Wild. Because just as people display different characteristics, so do the gemstones: the character of a stone depends on Mother Nature: from its crystal structure, the size, the colour, its hardness. Moonstones were the first that Wild cut to Characters. Today, the company processes almost all kinds of stones into Characters, mainly as sets with gems for necklace, earring and finger ring. The restrained processing of the gems retains their character and emphasizes their individual charisma: Some necklaces dazzle with a rather soft and gentle character, while others are stronger or more spirited. Ideally, they reflect the soul of the person wearing the jewellery, explains Wild. Wild illustrates this through examples: Our rubellite set with eleven gemstones and a total of carats for the necklace, ring and earrings is the strong statement of a superwoman. Sets of mandarin garnets are similarly characterful in colour but softer in shape. 09

A touch of nature: The combination of aquamarine and morganite has a delicate effect. The necklace with 81 characters and 1, carats flows like a waterfall over the decolleté. Another 47 stones ( carats) for a bracelet, ring and earrings complete the set. In total, it weighs 1, carats. Depending on the light, the mysterious shimmer of Moonstones changes from white to midnight blue. 11 Besides the large sets, Paul Wild is also presenting the Characters in Basel as sets for rings and pendants as well as special individual pieces. Amongst the latter, there is a luminous imperial topaz ( carats) in Marsala, Pantone s colour of the year, or a Paraiba tourmaline weighing carats dazzling in greenish turquoise. Mother Nature seems to appreciate geometry: the carat tanzanite is almost rectangular, the mandarin garnet with carats forms a triangle. For example, Paul Wild composes sets for rings and pendants from radiant green tourmalines as well as delicate light blue shimmering moonstones. Characters appear different to gems with a classic facet cut: it s not the incidence of light that makes them sparkle, but rather they gleam by themselves. And show their soul simply the character. After almost two years on the market, Markus Wild draws a positive conclusion: The reduced design of the Characters has a highly European touch. Therefore we re a little surprised and even happier that these modern creations are appreciated so well worldwide and are in such high demand.
