2 THE VICENZA GOLD JEWELLERY DISTRICT PAST AND FUTURE Few cities like Vicenza and its province are characterized by such a strong craft and entrepreneurial vocation. One of the areas in which this propensity has been expressed through the years is the gold jewellery sector. The first public document testifying to the existence of a thriving goldsmith activity in Vicenza dates from 1399: this is the statute of the Vicenza Guild of Goldsmiths, a corporation of 150 craftsmen. Throughout the reign of the Republic of Venice and afterwards, Vicenza goldsmiths produced gold and silver artistic works for nobility and for the Church. In 1800 production started to soar and currently it is able to satisfy and anticipate the latest fashion trends on international markets, without relinquishing the values passed down through time. Today the Vicenza Gold and Silver District has over 500 businesses employing over 5,000 people, many of which export almost all their production. On the strength of their craft tradition and indisputable creativity, Vicenza firms have adapted to new technologies, which are used to create innovative models and experiment with combinations of materials and trending jewellery.
