Studied in Paris. In the 1870's he went to Minton. He was influenced by the work of John Bateman of Biddulph Grange who published the book Mexican Orchids. Until this publication, the flower was not known and Mussill painted many orchid studies. He spent all his spare time painting, often on the Duke of Sutherland's estate at Trentham Gardens, Staffordshire and at Biddulph Grange. It is probably that Bentley Eshaldwell Brewery in Aberford Road, Woodlesford, founded 1828, commissioned these vessels for advertising purposes and promoting the Brewery's ales.
