2 December 2017 Juliette s Pearls Juliette Low had a strand of rare matched pearls that she sold in 1914 to help pay the rent for the Girl Scout National Office in Washington, DC (the current headquarters are in New York). She was quoted as saying Jewels are not important but my Girl Scouts are, they need the money more than I need pearls. Juliette gave so much of herself to others that Girl Scouts has continued to grow from the first 18 Girl Scouts in Savannah in 1912 to our current membership of 3.3 million girls and adults. In the spirit of Juliette s pearls, this patch is designed to give Girls the experience in creating jewelry, exploring the history of jewelry making, and learning about how we can make a difference using jewelry. Each activity level has its own requirements, please be sure to read which requirements match your Girl Scout s level. All activities and paperwork (one evaluation per Girl) must be completed and turned into Candice Blair by: Friday, January 5th, 2018 by 5:00pm. 4 LEARN Options: -LEARN about how jewelry is a part of cultural traditions (wedding bands, charm bracelets, Claddagh rings, etc.). How is jewelry a part of your cultural traditions? Share with your troop the history of any family jewelry or jewelry traditions that have been passed down through generations. -LEARN from an expert, visit a jewelry store. Learn about the different types of gemstones, cut and clarity of a diamond, and the different types of metals used in jewelry making. Find out what a jeweler does. -LEARN about SWAPS. SWAPS are a Girl Scout tradition known as a Special Whatchimacallit Affectionately Pinned Somewhere which signifies a special activity, event or your Troop. Make a SWAP and swap it with a Girl Scout. -LEARN about birthstones. Every month has a birthstone and gem affiliated with it. Discover and learn the history about your birthstone and gem and where that stone can be found in the world. Find someone else (Troop or friend) that shares your birthstone.

5 CREATE Options: -CREATE paper beads from magazines and advertisements. Supplies: old magazines or advertisements, scissors, ruler, pencil, toothpick or wooden skewer, Mod Podge (paper mache glue) -Making the beads: Cut strips from paper in a triangular shape. Make the base of triangle the size that you want the bead to be. Begin with the base and roll the triangle up around the toothpick or skewer. Glue the end of the triangle to the rolled bead. Give the bead a light coat of Mod Podge, let dry. Use these paper beads to make bracelets or necklaces. -CREATE recycled bracelets out of water or soda bottles. Supplies: 1 liter water or soda bottles (labels removed), scissors, masking tape, iron, nail polish or acrylic paint. -Making the bracelets: Wrap masking tape around the bottle to mark the width you would like your bracelet to be (2-3 tape widths works well). Cut the water bottle around the outside bands of masking tape. Remove the tape. Ask an adult to turn the iron on to medium without steam. Ask the adult to gently rub the cut sides of the plastic band on the iron to melt the rough edges of the band until they are smooth. Paint the inside of the band in a well ventilated area. -CREATE a pendant necklace from a washer. Supplies: Washers, hemp or waxed string, glitter glue, sharpies, clear nail polish, -Making the pendant: Use the glitter glue and sharpies to decorate the washer, allow to dry completely. Ask an adult to help you seal the washer with the clear nail polish, allow to dry completely. String your finished washer on your string. -CREATE a piece of jewelry using only recycled or found items. Ideas include: acorn necklaces, use #6 plastic to make Shrinky Dinks, make a jewelry organizer out of recycled materials.

6 SHARE Options: -SHARE by visiting a local retirement, nursing, hospital, hospice or other facility that provides care for others, and share the story of Juliette s Pearls with the residents. Donate some of the jewelry you created to care givers to show your appreciation for their service to the residents. -SHARE by talking to your Troop about ways you can use money in Girl Scouts to Take Action in your community. Create jewelry that you can sell at a craft fair to raise funds for a project. Ask an adult in your Troop to complete the fundraising paperwork you will need for any money earning. -SHARE by holding an event for younger girls or girls who are not yet Girl Scouts. Teach them the skills you learned by earning this patch. Set up the supplies so they can make jewelry of their own. -SHARE the gift of jewelry by making friendship bracelets to be given to new Girl Scout sisters that join your Troop. Make sure to include a card welcoming them to your Troop. Give the bracelets to your leader.
