3 CHAPTER 1 What Are Crystals? We all hear the word crystals. The word Crystal is used in reference to a type of jewelry for healing purposes, for spiritual purposes and for decoration. So, based on how the word is used, one would safely assume that crystals are used for many different purposes. So, with that in mind, what is a crystal, actually? Well, crystals are minerals basically that, through natural geological chemical processes, solidify into what we call a crystal. Crystals have specific chemical compositions that are unique to crystals only. They also have highly-ordered atomic and specific physical properties that are distinct to a particular type of crystal. Although people may call them pretty or distinct-looking rocks, in actuality they are very specific by composition, as opposed to a rock which is an agate of minerals and or mineraloids, but do not have specific compositions like crystals. A mineral can range in composition from what are called pure elements to simple salts to complex silicates with thousands of known forms. By the way, the study of minerals is called mineralogy. So, a crystal in simple terms is a mineral. For a mineral to be classified as a true mineral it has to have a crystalline structure and be in a solid form. It must also have a naturally-occurring homogeneous substance with a defined chemical structure. A crystal has an orderly geometric spatial arrangement of atoms in the internal structure of the crystal. There are 14 basic crystal lattice arrangements of atoms of crystals in the third dimension called Bravais Lattices. Each one of these lattices can be classified into one of seven crystal systems. All the recognized crystals today fit one of the Bravais Lattices in one of the seven systems. 3

4 A crystal s structure is based on internal regular atomic and ionic arrangements that are characteristic to the geometric form a particular crystal takes. Even when the mineral grains are too small to see, they too still carry the same atomic and ionic structures making them a crystal grain. It is definitely the chemistry and structure that indeed defines a crystal. It is also a fact that two minerals may have the same chemical structure, but differ in crystal structure which is known as polymorphs. An example of a polymorph would be Pyrite and Marcasite, which are both iron sulfides, but differ in atomic structural arrangement. Similarly, two minerals may have the same crystal structure, but do not have the same chemical compositions. Examples of this would be halite, which is made from sodium and chlorine, and galena which is made from lead and sulfur, and periclase which is made of magnesium and oxygen, but all three share the same cubic crystal structure. It is a crystal s structure physically that has a lot to do with its properties. For instance, a diamond and graphite have the same composition in that both are pure carbon, but graphite is soft while diamonds are the hardest of all minerals in the world. This is because the atomic arrangement between the two are completely different. The carbon atoms in graphite are arranged into sheets which can slide easily past one another while the atoms of diamonds interlock to form a strong three-dimensional network. A crystal's structure and symmetry play a role in determining many of its physical properties, such as cleavage, electronic band structure, and optical transparency. The main difference between Crystals and Rocks is that Crystals are a mineral that naturally solidify with specific chemical compositions and specific crystalline structures. On the other hand, Rocks are 4

5 agates which are composed of one or more minerals, as well as other things. A rock can contain remnants of organic matter, as well as mineraloids. Some rocks are just one mineral like limestone which is basically a sedimentary rock composed entirely of the mineral calcite. Rocks that make up the world s crust are composed of Quartz, Feldspar, Mica, Chlorite, Kaolin, Calcite, Epidote, Olivine, Augite, Hornblende, Magnetite, Hematite, Limonite and a few other minerals. Some minerals can be found commonly through-out the world, while others are only in specific locations world-wide. Over half of the mineral species known are so rare that they have only been found in a handful of samples, and many are known from only one or two small grains. Classifying minerals can range from very simple to very complex. A mineral can be classified and identified by several physical properties. Others have to be identified with techniques like an X-ray. There are currently more than 4,000 known minerals, according to the International Mineralogical Association, which is responsible for the approval of and naming of new mineral species found in nature. Of these, perhaps 100 can be called "common", 50 are "occasional", and the rest are "rare" to "extremely rare". 5

6 CHAPTER 2 Crystals and Metaphysics Crystals have been used since ancient civilization for their healing and metaphysical properties. There is archeological evidence that early man used crystals as part of their metaphysical belief systems at that time. In terms of using crystals for metaphysical or for spiritual / healing purposes, it is the crystalline atomic structures combined with the chemical composition of the crystal that is believed to emit electro magnetic energy. It is this energy that gives the crystal its healing power. The healing can be spiritual and/or physical through the healing of the spiritual. As healing stones crystals come from Mother Earth, which is a source of spirituality for many belief systems. Crystals are mainly created from the magma or earth s inner-core. The crystals that one buys to use for their own healing or spiritual purposes have undergone naturally a geological process of heating, cooling and displacement to become what we know as a Crystal. The actual energy field of a crystal is influenced by its geometric form, color and subtle vibration. Each crystal is made up of a tiny, minute crystal structure that emits energy, frequency or vibration, due to its constant atomic movement. The density of the crystal, as is the radiating of light through the crystal, also plays a part in its spiritual and healing characteristics, as well as its color. Since early times, man and crystals have had a symbiotic connection. There is evidence of this connection documented since the fourth millennium before Christ. Ancient civilizations, such as the Chinese, Egyptians, Sumerians, Greeks, Romans, or Shamans and Medicine Men, have used gemstones for healing in multiple 6

7 ways made into powders or elixirs, worn, carried or placed on the body and in ceremonies or rituals. This ancient knowledge has been passed down to our day and with the emerging popularity of holistic health and healing. The use of gemstones is again making its way into modern life. Crystals have been used in three basic forms for metaphysical purposes. They can be rough, polished or in objects like jewelry. Rough crystals are in their totally natural form. They are broken or mined from living rock. Because rough means left in their natural state, their surfaces are irregular in-look, as well as looking and feeling rough in nature. It is this untreated surface that looks rough that contains the greatest healing power. They are used by placing them on the body, in the hands as tools in things like meditating for healing the person. Polished crystals are tumbled with water and sand until their rough surfaces are smooth. These types are used for touch or in jewelry as well because of the smooth surface. Because their surface is smooth, they can be stroked or touched while healing as well as carried on the body or in one's pocket. All matter on the planet, from sub-atomic to physical to higher vibrational bodies, contain some form of dynamic energy. All crystals have minute crystals that vibrate and radiate energy. This is because the atoms are in constant motion and vibrate so they emit an energy frequency. With this in mind, just as we are affected by our environment and what we do in it, so are crystals. Just as what we eat, the weather and the colors we wear affect us, they also affect crystal vibrations when we touch or use them. They both absorb and give off energy with contact from us. So, the amount of light, both absorbed and given off from a crystal, is also important in its metaphysical properties in healing. The color and property of the 7

8 crystal resonate with the human body s energy system causing an effect, based on the characteristic that is unique to healing for that crystal. They can harmonize both the person and their environment when used correctly. Crystal healing also called crystal therapy is called vibrational medicine. What that means is it falls under a category of a wide variety of alternative and natural or holistic healing systems. These systems also incorporate spiritual and metaphysical components into the healing process. Vibrational medicine incorporates the use of life forces which is also called Qi or Prana and tries to create balance and harmony within the person and within their environment to promote a healthy state of being. Vibrational medicine s premises illness and disharmony is due largely to some form of imbalance which hampers the flow of life-force. When we have blockages, either in our bodies, minds, spirits or environments, we are not in balance with life-force. This is the breeding ground for things like illnesses of the body, mind and spirit or in one's environment. Crystals are a remedy to many of these problems. 8

9 CHAPTER 3 Healing and Metaphysical Properties of Crystals There are thousands of crystals on the planet. I cannot catalogue all of them because that would take a lifetime. But here are some of the main ones that are used for various things. Types of Crystals and Their Uses CRYSTAL PICTURE COLOR USE Agate Amethyst Ranges in color also known as a chalcedony. Colors vary as wide as the spectrum. Light violet to deep purple. Used for spiritual healing and clearing chakras, lets you look into the mirror of the soul. Protection. Increases intuition, helps to remember dreams. Boosts hormones, calms nervous system, heals digestive, heart and hearing disorders, good for insomnia, bones, stomach, skin and teeth. Angelite / Anhydrite Pale, light blue. Balances the physical body with the spiritual aura and also used for physical healing and also communication. Apatite Typically green, but can also be also yellow, blue, reddish brown and purple. Apatite is a balancing stone. Helps balance emotional, mental, physical, and spiritual bodies. 10 Apophyllite Clear, white, green, yellow, pink, violet or rarely brown. Used to maintain and rejuvenate energy. Facilitates attunement to higher levels of spiritual consciousness. Aquamarine Light Blue. A stone of joy and happiness. Protective stone of the traveler. Helps to see through people. Aids the throat, ears and mouth, spleen, heart and immune system. Breathing allergies. Arogonite Aventurine Black Obsidian White, colorless or with subdued shades of red, yellow, orange and brown. Varying shades of green. Dark green to dark brown to black. 11 Blue Durmortierite Calcite Carnelian Cat s Eye Celestite Chalcedony (represents a large family of stones with many shared properties) Blue jean colored can be violet and pinkish brown also. Generally white or colorless to light shades of yellow, orange, blue, pink, red green, brown, black or grey. Occasionally found as iridescent. Colors range from orange, coral colored, reds to browns. Colors range from honey to yellow, green to brown. Light to steel blues and grays, sometimes yellow streaked and red tints. Stone of harmony, balance and stability mentally, intellectually and emotionally. Good for blood and vein and circulatory issues, blood pressure and balancing energy in the chakras. One of the most favorable healing stones and used for positivity in all ways. Citrine Diamond Dolomite Ranges from sun yellow to wine orange in color. Ranges from white light color spectrum. The more light that can pass through the stone the closer to the white light color is emitted. There are rare yellow, brown, black, pink and blue diamonds. Mostly white, but can be yellow to pink to grey brown or black. It is called a manifesting stone. It dispels anger, gives optimism, aids in digestion and gives mental clarity. 13 Emerald Fluorite Geodes Garnet Galena Varies in shades of green some have yellow and blue overtones. Colors range from the hallmark purple then blue, green, yellow, colorless, brown, pink, black and reddish orange. Varies in color from clear, to white, purple, blues, smoky grays. You have to crack them open to see the color. All varying shades of red red to reddish brown, reddish purple to red that almost looks black. Varying shades of lead grey, silvers and black. It is known as a success in love stone. Provides domestic bliss as well as instills loyalty and sensitivity. Brings harmony to different aspects of one's life. Helps with communication. Good for fertility and eye sight. Prevents others from making unwanted energetic attachments to you. Energy balancer and encourages well being. Used to eliminate pain, rage and stress. Discourages impertinence, encourages subtlety. Assists in one's progression. It aids in one's quest to find peace in their life. Jasper Ranges from brick red to brownish red with streaks or specks of yellow, white, grey and or black. Various shades of blue - some with speckled white qualities and some with yellow Pyrite. Balances Chakras; opens all the Chakras. 19 Sapphire Tiger s Eye Topaz Shades of rich blues, to dark almost black blues. Also comes in purples, reds, pinks, yellows, but they are not as common. Although primarily known for the blue color, does come in yellow, brown, green rainbow, red, grey, colorless and pink. Represents loyalty, truth, sincerity and faithfulness.
