1 Edward VIII 1936 Edward VIII carries the oft quoted title The King who was never crowned as he gave up the crown before his coronation for his love of the American socialite Wallis Simpson. Hugely popular in his youth, his father George V despaired of the wild life the young Prince was carving out for himself and particularly in his choice of lady friends. His father believed it would damage the position of the monarchy that he had fought so hard to re-establish after his own father s excesses. George V and Queen Mary George V, much like his son George VI, never imagined that one day he would be king. Moreover, upon his elder brother s sudden death, not only was he thrust into this role, but he was also lined up to marry his brother s fiancé! Not only did George have to navigate the monarchy through the tumult of WWI, but in 1917 the Royal Family changed their name to Windsor; thereby creating the House of Windsor and distancing themselves from the wartime enemy Germany and its Kaiser, George s cousin. During this period there was a coalition government headed by the Liberal Lloyd George, as Prime Minister. Famously Lloyd George also introduced Britain s social welfare system in the pre-wwi period, which Doulton celebrated with a stamp moistener in his likeness. His wife, Queen Mary, was a great fan of Doulton, purchasing many wares over the decades. On her majesties famous visit to the Doulton Nile Street factory, she inadvertently re-christened a figure which would then be known the world over as Darling, and it was given the first number in their new figurine collection. In subsequent years Queen Mary acquired many other figures, notably by Leslie Harradine. Catalogs of the time play on this with the frequent addition underneath figure illustrations: As purchased by H.M. The Queen. Not only did she become a regular visitor to their stands at the International Trade Fairs of the late 19th Century, but she also famously ordered early examples of their art wares to be brought to her at Windsor Castle for inspection. Victoria herself was commemorated many times during her lifetime with beakers, jugs and models of her created in Doulton stoneware. Once Henry Doulton had successfully acquired a china factory in the heart of the Potteries, examples of fine china commemorative beakers, tea wares and plates were also produced. 3 The Reign of George III It was during the reign of George III that a young John Doulton famously invested his life savings in a small Lambeth pottery. From that he grew the multi-national company that we all know and love today. It was understandable, therefore, that the company chose as one of its prestige models to mark their 200th Anniversary in 2015 a figure of George III after a famous painting of the monarch. During this early period, heroes including Admiral Lord Nelson were celebrated with Doulton commemoratives. Nelson s death in 1805 together with famous periods in his life has continued to be commemorated into the last Century too by Doulton in particular. Political and Military Greats From the 19 th Century Napoleon D7001 and Duke of Wellington D7002 (Small Character Jug Pair) 4 H $450 Royal Doulton Duke of Wellington HN H Ltd. 1,500 $1,500 Britain s long naval history has been further celebrated with commemoratives to the Duke of Wellington, another leading political and military figure of the 19th Century. So it is no surprise to see commemoratives to him especially in connection with his defeat of Napoleon at the Battle of Waterloo in Yet, it is not just heroes that found themselves being commemorated. It is recorded that Henry Doulton was a great fan of the poet William Wordsworth. As it would seem, it was Charles Noke s too, for he produced one of his famous Limited Edition Loving Cups to the 19th Century Poet Laureate in Bairstow Manor Duke of Wellington Toby Jug 9.5 H Ltd. 200 $400 Duke of Wellington with Horse Handle D H $295 The official coronation portrait of George III by Allan Ramsay. 4 Vice Admiral Lord Nelson Commemoratives Delving Further Back Into English History Halcyon Days Vice Admiral Lord Nelson Box (To Mark the Bicentenary Anniversary of The Battle of Trafalgar) 2.5 Dia. Ltd. 300 $1,000 Vice-Admiral Lord Nelson D H $350 Lord Nelson D H $325 Whilst Doulton may have existed through nine reigns, the artists at have often delved further back into English history. For example: to the time of the House of Orange, the House of Stuart and of course its predecessor the House of Tudor. The House of Tudor has perhaps provided more inspiration than any other since the present House of Windsor, with its tales of skulduggery, religious conflict and love. Who can fail to remember tales of Henry VIII and his six wives or the equally intriguing stories of the lives of his children and heirs Edward VI, Mary I and of course Elizabeth I who successfully guided England through a golden Elizabethan age; a period of great advancement and also the time of Shakespeare and his wife Anne Hathaway! However, Doulton s foray into the distant past has not stopped there. Artists have looked back even further and produced commemoratives to Richard II ( ), Henry V ( ), King John ( ) whose signing of the Magna Carta in 1215 is considered by some to be an early step in the evolution of the constitution of the United Kingdom, and even Richard I who is known more commonly as Richard the Lionheart ( ). Whatever your field of collecting, you can see that so many are in fact interwoven. From one main collection it is wonderful to seek out sub-collecting themes which add to and enhance the stories of our cherished collections!
