2 Lot: 1 A Ceylon Volunteer Service Medal to Major R. C. Paterson, in associated postal box; a group of WWII campaign medals comprising: Star, Africa Star, Italy Star, War Medal and Defence Medal, with a similiar miniature group; and a cased pipe. Estimate: Lot: 2 A China 1900 Medal to L.W. Stitson Boy 1CL H.M.S. Orlando, with 'taylor's copy' clasps for Taku Forts and relief of Pekin (entitlement was for a no bar medal only); together with a War Medal to A.M. L. Stitson R.F.C.. Probably a family pair. Lot: 3 A GVIR Military Medal group to Sergeant J.W. Moore R.A., (MM in fitted case), Star, Africa Star, France and Germany Star, War Medal; together with various associated documents and a side cap. Sergeant Moore enlisted in 1939 with the Northumberland Hussars T.A.. He was transferred to the R.A. and posted to B Battery 102 (Northumberland Hussars) Anti-Aircraft/Anti-Tank regiment. In January 1942 he qualified for the MM fighting against German armoured forces in North Africa. The citation states that "in a running fight of five hours Sgt Moore by his personal example, ability and contempt of enemy fire...prevented the Germans from attacking the mass of transport..[and]...inflicted losses on the enemy tanks and transports". He was subsequently taken prisoner and held in Italy before escaping to take part in the allied invasion of France, where he was killed in a road accident in August This lot includes a copy of the MM citation, correspondence and pictures, and a signed copy of 'Walking to Freedom', by Major Ian English, who was a friend of the recipient. Davies, Mercantile Marine War Medal and BWM; together with a silver presentation capstan inkwell incorporating a watch stand in the lid, inscribed to Davies on the occasion of his wedding from the officers of S.S. Ajax in 1920 (marks rubbed). Lot: 5 A Great War pair to 2nd Lieutenant R.G. Viner, together with a WWII miniature AFC group with a vacant AFC fitted case. Lot: 6 A Great War trio to 4516 Sjt G.J. Hunt East African Ordnance Department, Star, BWM and Victory Medal. Lot: 7 A Great War trio to Gnr W.K. Seadon R.F.A., Star, BWM and Victory Medal, together with a Star, a Burma Star, a War Medal and a Defence Medal. Lot: 8 A Great War trio to Captain K.R. Paterson R.A.F, Star (Royal Welsh Fusiliers), War Medal and Victory Medal (RAF). Lot: 9 A Great War trio to R-4291 Pte W.J. Lewinton King's Royal Rifle Corps, Star, BWM and Victory Medal, mounted for wearing. Lot: 10 A Great War group to E. Smith Stoker Petty Officer RN, Star, British War Medal, Victory Medal, Naval LSGC (H.M.S. Courageous); together with the recipient's certificate of service and other paperwork; and also with a Star, Atlantic Star, Africa Star, and War Medal. S.P.O. Smith served aboard H.M.S. Princess Royal at the battles of Heligoland Bight and Dogger Bank, receiving a share of the prize fund for each battle, in the latter case in connection with the destruction of the German armoured cruiser S.M.S. Blucher. Estimate: Lot: 11 A Great War pair to Pte 2 F.A. Perrott R.A.F., in postage box, together with a London County Council King's Medal for attendance ( ), and three other attendance medals, all marked to F. Perrott. Lot: 12 A Great War pair to Pte. A. Jeffs Lincolnshire Regiment, BWM and Victory Medal in postage box and envelope. Lot: 13 A Great War pair to Cpl. C.J. Thorne R.A., BWM and Victory Medal. Lot: 14 A Memorial Plaque to Frederick James Berner. Lot: 15 A Memorial Plaque to William Croft, in card case and postage envelope, together with a small quantity of ephemera and research. Sergeant William Croft was in the 2nd Battalion Duke of Cambridge's Own (Middlesex) Regiment, and was killed in action on the Western Front on July 1st the first day of the Battle of the Somme. 3 A QSA to 2577 Corporal S. Baverstock Hampshire Regiment, with clasps for Relief of Kimberly, Paardeberg, Johannesburg and Diamond Hill, together with facsimile service record. Corporal Steven Baverstock served with the Hampshire company of the 7th Mounted Infantry, before being invalided home in Estimate: Lot: 17 A QSA to 4821 Cpl R. Vosper 2nd Hampshire Regiment, with clasps for Cape Colony, Orange Free State and South Africa 1902, together with facsimile service documents. Corporal Richard Vosper was wounded at the battle of Karree Siding in March This is notable for being the only battle at which Rudyard Kipling was present. Vosper went on to serve in the mounted infantry and was later to be court martialled for drunkeness. Estimate: Lot: 18 A QSA to Major J.W. Jerome R.A.M.C., with clasps for Cape Colony, Transvaal and Wittebergen Lot: 19 A South Africa pair to 1320 Pte. W. Farthing Norfolk Regiment, QSA with Relief of Kimberly, Paardeberg and Transvaal clasps; KSA with 1901 and 1902 clasps. Lot: 20 A WWII group of four, Star, Burma Star, Defence Medal and War Medal, with associated mounted miniature group and delivery slip; together with a Welch Regiment cap badge, an airforce cap band and badge, and other items. Lot: 21 A collection of British medals, comprising: a miniature group of CB, Star, BWM, Victory Medal, Defence Medal, 1937 Coronation and 1952 Coronation medals, mounted for wearing; a BWM to Alexander McInnes; a Special Constabulary Faithful Service medal to Edwin N Potter, with clasps for 1939, 1943 and 1947, together with a War Medal and Defence Medal un-officially named to the same man; a British Red Cross Society first aid proficiency award 1915/16 named to 'Edgar N Potter'; a War Medal and an Atlantic Star. Lot: 22 A family collection of medals, comprising: Great War Trio (with Star) and Memorial Plaque to Pte L.J. Summers Grenadier Guards, plaque named to Leonard James Summers and in card envelope; a Great War Pair to Cpl. A.J. Summers R.E.; and a small quantity of ephemera relating to both men, and including a letter from Leonard Summers to their mother, describing a wound received in September 1915, and giving an account of his experience under fire, and a piece of shrapnel, with fragmentary label, that apparently lodged in his pack on the same occasion. Estimate: Lot: 23 A good family collection of medals, comprising: four to J Oates AB Mercantile Fleet Auxiliary, Star, War Medal and Victory Medal, EVIIR LSGC (I 2743 J.R. Oates Sean 2CL. R.N.R.); a War Medal to 9413 Pte. H.G.J. Oates Dorset Regiment (presumed to be the first man's brother); a War Medal and a Defence Medal attributed to Pte. Jack Oates Dorset Regiment (presumed to be the first man's son); together with a small quantity of supporting ephemera. Estimate: Lot: 24 A small collection of Soviet Russian medals, some with warrant cards, and together with some un-associated cards; and a Soviet belt plate. Lot: 25 A small collection of foreign awards, comprising: a Belgian Croix de Guerre, an Italian East Africa commemorative medal for , a German Boxer Rebellion medal, and a Dutch War Commemorative Cross. (4) Lot: 26 An Afghanistan Medal , naming largely erased but indicating a private of the 2/9th Foot, lettering and dates on the reverse also erased. Lot: 27 An interesting Great War pair to SE Pte E. Browning Army Vetinary Corps, War Medal and Victory Medal; together with a quantity of ephemera including a notebook, a few items of correspondence, and a variety of official forms including a charge for refusing to obey an order. Browning was a grocer in civilian life, and his notes include lines of verse and other passages that strongly hint at conscientious objection. Lot: 28 Three medals to Pte. D.J. Thomas, War Medal, Victory Medal, Defence Medal (attributable to the same man in connection with service in the Home Guard); and a small quantity of related ephemera. Lot: 29 A French 'Croix-Rouge' medal, issued by Societe Francaise de Secours aux Blesses Militaires Lot: 30 A collection of medals, comprising: an ISM to Joseph Henry Davis, an ISM to Herbert William Thomas Sinfield, a of 16

4 Coronation Medal, a Kuwait Liberation Medal, and a cased National Service Medal. (5) foreign; together with a quantity of mine probes, and a pair of 'anti-mine' goggles, cased. Lot: 31 A WWII group of five attributed to a casualty: Pte. R.F. Small Hampshire Regiment, Star, Africa Star, Italy Star, War Medal and Defence Medal, mounted for wearing, with postal note. Estimate: Lot: 32 A Great War pair and Memorial Plaque to Gnr W. Maden R.A., who died on Thursday, 12th July 1917, aged 25. Estimate: Lot: 33 A Great War trio and Memorial Plaque to 2560 Dvr. W. Baverstock R.F.A., with re-named Victory Medal. Estimate: Lot: 34 A QSA and Great War trio to 6128 Pte. H. Fribence Essex Regiment, with re-named Victory Medal, and heavy contact wear to the naming on the QSA. Estimate: Lot: 35 H.M.S. Doris: a fascinating handwritten diary kept by a member of her crew between August 1st 1914 and July 29th 1916, during which period the light cruiser and her crew are celebrated for having undertaken amphibious raiding operations in the Eastern Mediterranean, as well as for playing a supporting role in the Gallipoli campaign. The diary entries make reference to these events, as well as giving many other interesting insights. Estimate: Lot: 36 Of naval interest, a montage of pencil sketches of the voyage of H.M.S. Triumph to and from the Pacific Station, , in a glazed frame. Lot: 37 A large collection of Great War British and French ephemera, including pay books, maps, manuals, commissions, photographs and other similar items, many named individuals. Lot: 38 A British issue Lusitania medallion, unboxed. Lot: 39 A small collection of various entrenching tools, British and Lot: 40 A small collection of U.S. Great War era ephemera, comprising diaries, photographs and a medal entitlement form. Lot: 41 A French trench periscope, tubular metal body with a brass drawer at either end fitted with an angled mirror, a swinging hook attached near the top of the body, bears the mark 'N II 136', length when collapsed 150 cm (59 in.) Lot: 42 An EIIR Royal Engineers brass wall plaque, another similar, a green beret with Royal Marines badge, and various other badges and items of miscellaneous militaria. (2) Estimate: Lot: 57 A collection of WWI correspondence from a father in the army to his young sons, from North Africa, Greece and other locations, censor marks and postmarks, Estimate: Lot: 58 A small collection of military ephemera, including an Australian Commonwealth Military Force cap badge, various issues of Soldier magazine, and other items. Lot: 59 Of aviation interest: a British type R1155A Lancaster Bomber radio receiver, with Air Ministry plate bearing serial number 43974; together with a small collection of headsets and other radio equipment. Lot: 60 EXTRA LOT. Of Naval and Topographical interest, a collection of photographs and ephemera, the former property of Captain Arthur Robert Halfhide RN, including numerous interesting photographs taken while on service between the World Wars, notably of: China, North Africa and the Mediterranean, Warships and other vessels (including HMS Pegasus, aboard which Halfhide seems to have served, and HMS Argus), Naval seaplanes, aerial views, Gallipoli and the Bosphorus, and many others, in four albums; together with a collection of service certificates marking Halfhide's careers from Midshipman to Commander, in various ships. Lot: 62 An unusual British shako, 80th Regiment Staffordshire Volunteers, beaverskin body with patent leather peak, sunken patent leather top, brass chinscales and bosses, QVC shako plate, red over white ball tuft; complete with hat tin. Estimate: Lot: 63 An officer's waist belt clasp, 24th (2nd Warwickshire) Regiment of Foot, pre-1881, gilt brass with white metal details, scrolling side bars, the two parts with corresponding bench marks; together with a VR brass belt plate overlaid with a white metal crest, and a Royal Signals two-part cap badge. Lot: 64 Lieutenant-Colonel William H. Mower 25th Regiment of Minnesota Volunteer Militia: his epaulettes, and a small collection of associated items, the gilt and bullion epaulettes each with '25' to a blue ground roundel, in a fitted tin case; documents including certificates of commission signed by Minnesota Governor Henry Sibley; a pair of kid leather gauntlets; and other items of uniform and ephemera. Governor Sibley sent a military Expedition to Wright County, Minnesota, in 1859, to quell an outbreak of vigilantism, and a letter in this collection instructs Mower to accompany the expedition and to advise Sibley of 'whatever...it may be necesary [sic] for (Sibley) to know'. Estimate: Lot: 65 A VR Royal Marine Artillery officer's shoulder belt and pouch, with corresponding sword belt and hangers, gilt lace belts with red leather backing, the pouch with marines crest and motto incorporating crossed cannon, gilt-brass fittings, shoulder belt with large rectangular buckle and triangular terminal with flaming grenade, sword belt with snake fastening, the oval side plates with lions surmounting crowns. Estimate: Lot: 66 An Australian brass fireman's helmet, Metropolitan Fire Brigade (Melbourne), brass skull with neck-guard and peak and 4 of 16

6 surmounted by a crest with a dragon embossed to each side, 'MFB' in relief to the front, leather backed brass chin scales, leather liner. Lot: 69 A collection of military apparel, including hats, gaiters, puttees, jackets, shirts and trousers. Estimate: Lot: 70 A pair of British Army khaki motor cyclist's pantaloons, size 12, by Philips and Piper Ltd., indistinct date stamp, in good condition with War Department markings; a Civil Defence Corps dark blue battledress blouse, dated 1952; and set of Aircrew Overalls Mk 15T. (3) Lot: 71 A British Brodie type helmet, a brimless paratrooper type helmet, three other hemets, and four post-1950s gas masks in their cases. Estimate: Lot: 77 A 19th Century British coastguard type sword, curved blade 24 3/4 in., ridged cast iron grip, angular brass knucklebow, lacks scabbard; together with a composite sword with a narrow fullered blade, and a sheet brass knuckle guard. (2) Lot: 78 A 19th Century continental artillery sidearm, curved blade 27 in. with broad fullers, brass hilt with knucklebow, back quillon with knop finial, ribbed grip, lacks scabbard. Lot: 79 A 19th Century continental artillery sidearm, flat-sided curved blade 23 1/4 in., brass hilt with knucklebow, downturned back quillon, ribbed grip, black leather scabbard with brass locket and chape (non-corresponding serial numbers). Lot: 80 A 19th Century continental other ranks sidearm, curved blade 23 in., brass hilt with knucklebow and downturned back quillon, ribbed grip, lacks scabbard; together with another, similar. (2) Lot: 81 A 19th Century quillon dagger, broad spear-point blade 11 in. with allover engraved decoration and the legend 'Das Walt Got Fater Son Hl Geist Der Den Weg Zum Himmel Beret', large stamped mark to the ricasso, drooping quillons with triform terminals and a finger ring, large acorn shaped pommel, hardwood grip spirally bound and finished with braided wire, lacks scabbard. Lot: 82 A 19th Century smallsword, hollow triangular-section blade 32 3/4 in. with blued decoration to the forte; all-steel hilt with twin shell guard having cut decoration to the outer face and faceted studs to the inside; grip, quillon block, knucklebow and pommel all with faceted studs, lacks scabbard. Lot: 83 A Belgian FAL C type tubular bayonet, in scabbard; an Italian model 1891 Carcano bayonet, in fluted steel scabbard; A Czech VZ23 long knife bayonet, in steel scabbard; and a vacant US scabbard. Estimate: Lot: 84 A Belgian model 1890 cavalry trooper's sword, curved broad fullered blade 35 3/4 in., brass three bar hilt with leather grip, various marks to the hilt and ricasso, steel scabbard with single loose ring and with marks corresponding to those on hilt. Lot: 94 A Canadian Ross bayonet, un-fullered blade 10 in., un-modified point, steel hilt with wooden grips, leather scabbard with internal chape. Lot: 95 A Dutch 20th Century military sword, slender curved blade 34 in. marked 'Yzerhouwer', pierced sheet guard with engraved decoration, plated steel scabbard. Lot: 96 A French model 1831 other ranks' 'gladius' sidearm, broad double-edged blade 19 in., regulation brass hilt with roundels to the cross-guard and a ribbed grip, black leather scabbard with brass locket and chape. Estimate: Lot: 97 A French model 1866 bayonet, yataghan type blade 22 1/2 in., marked for Stehelin & Cie Bitschwiller-Thann December 1867, regulation brass hilt, steel scabbard. Lot: 98 A GIV 1821 pattern light cavalry officer's sword, pipe-backed blade 34 1/2 in. and etched with royal cypher, regulation three bar hilt, with bound fishskin covered grip, lacks scabbard. Lot: 99 A GVIR artillery officer's sword, etched blade 34 1/2 in., named for Gaunt and Sons to the ricasso and numbered to the back, regulation three bar hilt, brown leather scabbard with frog. Lot: 100 A GVR 1897 pattern infantry officer's sword, etched blade 33 in., steel hilt of regulation form and with brown leather sword knot, brown leather covered scabbard. Lot: 101 A Russian model 1827 cavalry sword, curved blade 34 1/2 in., with various markings including cursive script to the back edge in the French manner, brass three-bar hilt with langets and a ribbed grip, steel scabbard with twin suspension rings. Estimate: Lot: 102 A Soviet naval dress dagger, double edged diamond section blade 8 1/4 in., ricasso stamped '1951', gilt brass mounted hilt with S-curve quillons, canted square section grip, pommel marked with Soviet emblem, sprung retention catch, gilt metal mounted scabbard, locket decorated with a fouled anchor and a square rigged sailing ship. Lot: 103 A Swedish folding knife, by J. Engstrom Eskilstuna, steel blade 4 in. and hinged within a brass frame that is withdrawn from the hilt to allow the knife to be opened and closed, sprung retaining catch, the slightly bulbous grip formed of figured wood; a sheath knife, with steel crossguard and wooden grip, and in a leather scabbard; and an oriental souvenir knife in a wooden scabbard. (3) Lot: 108 A collection of four bayonets, comprising a Mauser 'Butcher' type in a steel scabbard, a British 1907 pattern, a French model 1866 bayonet, and a socket bayonet, the last three lacking scabbards. (4) Lot: 109 A continental other ranks' sidearm, briquet type, curved blade 22 1/4 in., brass hilt with knucklebow and ribbed grip, brass mounted black leather scabbard. Estimate: Lot: 110 A court or society sword, hollow triangular-section blade 30 3/4 in. with blued and gilt forte, gilt hilt with profuse moulded decoration involving an eagle motif to the shell and the pommel, knucklebow with entwining foliage, gilt and foliate moulded grip with longitudinal bands of MOP, lacks scabbard; together with a souvenir type sword by Wilkinsons, curved blade 29 1/2 in., gilt metal hilt with S-curve quillons and lion head pommel, lacks scabbard. (2) Lot: 111 A decorative replica sword, 'The sword of General La Fayette', curved blade 33 1/4 in. with blued and gilt forte, gilt metal half basket hilt, the openwork guard inhabited by a lion and a dragon, no scabbard, with wooden wall mounting. Lot: 112 A late-18th or early-19th Century English smallsword, hollow triangular section blade 32 3/4 in., etched panels to the forte including the name 'Firmin & Sons 153 Strand and Conduit Street London', cut steel and studded hilt with pierced shaped oval dish, attenuated finger rings, studded spatulate quillons, swollen grip, urn shaped pommel, in its steel mounted vellum covered scabbard and with a pigskin sword bag. Lot: 113 A post war Bulgarian officer's dress dagger, double edged blade 9 1/4 in. with narrow central fuller, brass crossguard with flattened teminals, canted square section pommel and collar, white composition grip with brass strip to each side incorporating a geometric design, brass mounted steel scabbard, locket with national emblems in relief, brass chain hangers and clip. Lot: 114 A third pattern F-S dagger, of standard form with ringed grip, crossguard named for William Rogers and overstamped with a crowned 'I', leather scabbard with steel chape. Lot: 115 An Austrian model 1845 cavalry sword, pipe-backed blade 31 1/2 in., double edged for the last 12 3/4 in., steel guard pierced with symmetrical scrolling design, fishskin covered grip, lacks scabbard. Lot: 116 An EIIR naval officer's sword, Wilkinsons blade 31 in., numbered 87609, regulation gilt brass hilt with fishskin grip and complete with sword knot, gilt brass mounted black leather scabbard, with sword bag; together with an associated sword belt, gilt brass belt plate with KC over fouled anchor, black leather belt and hangers; and an associated bosun's call.
