Scott, Alert Bay, 52, Singing Woman. $5,000-10, Northwest Coast Polychrome Carved Wood Mask, Nootka, c. late 19th century, large cedar form with articulated lower jaw, eyes, and lattice crown, with bold features and painted overall using commercial paints, black, gray-blue, red, yellow, and green stylizations on a cream-colored ground, much of the inner headband with cloth and cedar bark strips remains, (cracks), ht. 20 1/2 Provenance:...gotten from Indian agent, Mr. P. B. Ashbridge, Port Alberni B.C. 4,20,40... It was a mask used by the chief of the Nootka tribe at ceremonial dances and is approximately 70 years old. The crown is the mark of a king or chief. Worn by the chief and this particular one was owned by the late Chief Maguinna..., (from a letter by P. B.
