1 Newsletter - July 2017 Shasta Gem and Mineral Society, Inc. P.O. Box Redding, CA shastagemandmineral@gmail.com The RocToc Hello Rockhounds! President s Message: Our annual picnic at the Anderson Riverside Park was a special time for all those attending. Heavy rains meant we all gathered together under the pavilion roofs, visiting and exchanging news and ideas. The auction was a success in spite of the rain. Congratulations to everyone for making it a happy time. The recent heat wave has chased all of us from the field some of the time, and some of us from the fields all of the time; but not all of us rockhounds have been chased from the fields all of the time. The high elevation snows have largely receded, and roads and trails are open for our exploration. Our lapidary and jewelry classes continue or are coming up, so keep an eye on the Shasta Gem and Mineral Facebook pages. The workshop is cleaner than ever and the equipment is being maintained and improved. I saw a new sphere machine set up last Saturday. Plans for our annual October show at the Shasta County fairgrounds in Anderson are firming, with dealers and demonstrators committing to attend. Keep your water bottles handy when you re out scrounging for those special rock, mineral and fossil finds. Wishing everyone their special finds, and trips for making memories. Your President, Alan Leedy

4 The RocToc July of 8 Rubies, the birthstone of July, are considered the king of gems and represent love, health and wisdom. It was believed wearing a fine red ruby bestowed good fortune on its owner. A ruby is the most valuable gemstone and its value increases based on its color and quality. Ruby was a traditional birthstone of July, from as far as back as the ancient Polish, Russian, Tibetan and old Hindu (Ayurvedic) calendar. This gemstone for July is the red variety of corundum, which in a different color would be otherwise called sapphire. There are several important July birthstones, including Ruby, Sapphire, Carnelian, Onyx, Sardonyx, and Turquoise, all depending on the interpretation of birthstones in question. The chemical composition of ruby is aluminum oxide. This is the well-known mineral family of corundum, which basically has two most distinguished members: ruby and sapphire. Only red corundum specimens are called rubies, all the other colors, including blue, green, brown, yellow, purple, and black are sapphires. Myanmar is the country of origin of the most delicate and highly valued rubies with color that resembles pigeon s blood. Thailand is also a famous location for quality Rubies.
5 The RocToc July of 8 The SGMS June 24, rock swap held at the Airport Rd workshop, braved hot sun and toasty temperatures. Jim Williamson and Steve Puderbaugh set up tables and welcomed visitors to view their wares. The rock swap has been substituted for the June field, a way of avoiding field collecting in high heat. A side note to the event is the arrival, courtesy of Steve Puderbaugh, of gravel to fill in the mud puddle in the driveway. The gravel is tamped and smoothed, and we hope that drivers will treat it gently.
