1 KENT Ashford 2/620 (C.29.F004) TQ CHRISTCHURCH SCHOOL, ASHFORD An Archaeological Evaluation at Christchurch CE [Aided} High School, Millbank Road, Kingsnorth, Ashford, Kent Kendall, G Hassocks : Archaeology South-East, 2002, 10pp, figs, tabs, refs One of the two trenches at this site contained evidence of Mid to Late Iron Age activity in the form of a single east-west linear gully, as well as several adjacent pits and postholes. The shallow nature of the features indicated that they had suffered badly from cultivation in the past. [Au(abr)] Archaeological periods represented: IA 2/621 (C.29.F031) TR TAYLOR'S GARAGE, BRIDGE STREET, WYE An Archaeoilogical Evaluation at Taylor's Garage, Bridge Street, Wye, Kent Griffin, N Ditchling : Archaeology South-East, 2002, 21pp, figs, tabs, refs A large number of post-medieval features were recorded, including ditches, gullies, cess/rubbish pits, post holes and a brick-lined drain. A medieval drain and contemporary ditch and gully were also noted. A map of 1746 suggested that a building stood on the site at this time, and many of the features may relate to this and extant adjoining properties. [Au(abr)] Archaeological periods represented: MD, PM Canterbury 2/622 (C.29.F044) TR ST MARY'S STREET, CANTERBURY Archaeological Evaluation on land at 8 St Mary's Street, Canterbury Helm, R Canterbury : Canterbury Archaeological Trust, 2002, 15pp, figs, tabs, refs Remains of significant archaeological potential were discovered during an evaluation inadvance of a proposed residential development. A Late Iron Age north-south aligned ditch, overlain by a clay floor with drainage gullies and post holes was located. A metalled street surface between two known Roman street was also noted. A series of post holes defined a substantial timber building of Roman date. These features were sealed by a clay floor containing pottery dated to the late 1st and early 3rd centuries. A layer of garden soil containing finds dating from the Late Iron Age to post-medieval periods was detected, and thought to confirm this area as waste ground, orchards and gardens from the medieval period onwards. 2 2/623 (C.29.F012) TR CANTERBURY POLICE STATION An Archaeological Evaluation at Canterbury Police Station, Old Dover Road, Canterbury, Kent Gollop, A Canterbury : Canterbury Archaeological Trust, 2002, 8pp, figs The evaluation took place prior to an extension at the police station. No significant archaeological remains were encountered, although the depth and nature of the trenches suggested large Roman quarry pits. The extent of these features was outside the evaluation area however, and as a result accurate determination was difficult. [Au(abr)] 2/625 (C.29.F005) TR HERNE BAY HIGH SCHOOL Herne Bay High School, Herne Bay, Kent. An Archaeological Evaluation Wotherspoon, M & Hounsell, D Hertford : Hertfordshire Archaeological Trust, 2002, 18pp, figs, tabs, refs Work undertaken by: Hertfordshire Archaeological Trust Previous phases of evaluation, observation and recording at this site had revealed archaeological features, predominantly of Late Iron Age to Roman date. Earlier activity was also indicated. A compex landscape had been identified nearby. This watching brief confirmed the continuation of features of probable Late Iron Age/early Roman date in the south-east corner of the site. A linear feature was thought to be a continuation of a trackway/holloway excavated to the south east of the school. [Au(abr)] Archaeological periods represented: LIA, RO 2/626 (C.29.F040) TR LAND ADJACENT TO THE REGISTRY, UNIVERSITY OF KENT An Archaeological Evaluation adjacent to the Registry, University of Kent Ward, A Canterbury : Canterbury Archaeological Trust, 2002, 4pp, figs The evaluation was carried out in advance of a new extension to the University. No archaeological remains were located, and it was thought that large scale soil movement during the construction of the campus had cleared the area of archaeological evidence. [Au(adp)] 2

3 2/627 (C.29.F039) TR LAND AT VERNON GRANGE, 35 OLD DOVER ROAD, CANTERBURY Archaeological Evaluation on land at Vernon Grange, 35 Old Dover Road, Canterbury Helm, R Canterbury : Canterbury Archaeological Trust, 2002, 11pp, figs, tabs, refs Archaeological features and deposits were encountered in this evaluation in advance of a single-storey extension. A clay floor was located, immediately overlaying the natural brickearth. This was cut by a later pit containing Roman pottery dating to between the late 2nd and early 4th centuries. Two undated pits were also located. During the 19th century, a malting house was built over the entire area, truncating the ground surface. [Au(abr)] Archaeological periods represented: MD, PM, PR, RO, UD 2/628 (C.29.F037) TR LAND TO THE REAR OF 44 ST PETER'S STREET, CANTERBURY Archaeological Evaluation of Land to the Rear of 44 St Peter's Street fronting Tower Way, Canterbury Helm, R Canterbury : Canterbury Archaeological Trust, 2002, 19pp, figs, tabs, refs Remains of significant archaeological potential were found in both the trenches excavated. The earliest exposed feature was a north-east/south-west aligned chalk and flint dwarf wall, provisionally dated to the late medieval period. A sequence of clay floors were recorded. A post-medieval demolition layer was identified, as well as a drainage ditch and pits relating to the use of the site as gardens in the postmedieval period. Archaeological Field Evaluation Report Johnson, S Newark : John Samuels Archaeological Consultants, 2002, 29pp, figs, refs Work undertaken by: John Samuels Archaeological Consultants The site was originally thought to have potential for the recovery of Palaeolithic remains. However, this evaluation revealed a modern field drain and gully, some undiagnostic prehistoric pottery and a small assemblage of tile. The potential for the site was regarded as low. 4 Three trenches were excavated in response to proposals for the construction of a new church hall. None of the trenches were deep enough to record pre-medieval layers. A chalk and flint wall and the footings for another wall, as well as clay floors were noted. A hearth was located, demonstrating the existence of medieval dwellings predating the construction of the church. Demolition layers were in evidence, as well as post-medieval pits and layers and the remains of a Victorian cess-tank. [Au(abr)] Archaeological periods represented: MD, PM 2/631 (C.29.F045) TR SUNNYSIDE, WOOD HILL, HACKINGTON An Archaeological Evaluation of land at Sunnyside, Wood Hill, Tyler Hill, Hackington, Kent Gollop, A G Canterbury : Canterbury Archaeological Trust, 2002, 6pp, figs, tabs The evaluation was carried out in advance of a residential development. A single trench revealed no archaeological remains. [Au(abr)] Dover 2/632 (C.29.F038) TR STONAR GARDENS, SANDWICH An Archaeological Evaluation at 2 Stonar Gardens, Sandwich, Kent Rady, J Canterbury : Canterbury Archaeological Trust, 2002, 14pp, figs, tabs, refs The site lay on or near to the medieval town of Stonar, destroyed by the French in the Hundred Years War. Two metalled surfaces and associated layers were located, and were thought to represent a road connecting Stonar to Sanwich and dating to the 12th century. There was no evidence for intensive occupation of the area. [Au(abr)] Archaeological periods represented: PM 2/633 (C.29.F036) TR BROADLEES BOTTOM, DOVER CASTLE An ArchaeologicalEvaluation at Broadlees Bottom, Dover Castle, Kent Priestly-Bell, G Ditchling : Archaeology South-East, 2002, 15pp, figs, tabs, refs The evaluation was carried out in advance of the construction of a ticket booth. Two, possibly three earlier modern phases of the metalled access way were revealed. A dump deposit of predominantly medieval building materials, comprising ragstone blocks and lime mortar, overlay one of the roadways and probably derived fom works associated with the collapse of a gateway. With the exception of reused and redeposited materials, no archaeological remains were encountered. [Au(abr)] 2/634 (C.29.F033) TR

[Au(abr)] 2/635 (C.29.F023) TR HILL CROSS FARM, FOXBURGH HILL, WOODNESBOROUGH Report on Evaluation Trenching at Hill Cross Farm, Foxborough Hill, Woodnesborough Parfitt, K Dover : Dover Archaeological Group, 2002, 13pp, figs, tabs, refs Work undertaken by: Dover Archaeological Group The evaluation was in advance of tree planting in the field. Fieldwalking exercises the previous year had located evidence of occupation. 38 features were revealed in this exercise, most undatable post holes. However, a four-post structure with flint packing stones was locaeted, tentatively dated to the Late Iron Age by a single sherd, and the fact that it was not aligned with later Roman structures. A group of parallel ditches was thought to relate to a narrow ditched trackway. Gullies were also present. In total, the features represented a landscape from the prehistoric to medieval periods. [Au(adp)] Archaeological periods represented: IA, MD, PR, RO 2/636 (C.29.F025) TR HONEYWOOD PARKWAY, WHITE CLIFFS BUSINESS PARK, WHITFIELD Evaluation Trenching at Honeywood Parkway, White Cliffs Business Park, Whitfield Parfitt, K Canterbury : Canterbury Archaeological Trust, 2002, 10pp, figs, tabs, refs The evaluation failed to reveal the presence of any archaeological features, except for a small prehistoric flint scatter in the ploughsoil. This was likely to have been Neolithic-Bronze Age, on the basis of other finds in the area. Archaeological Evaluation Boast, E J Broadstairs : Trust for Thanet Archaeology, 2002, 10pp, figs, tabs Only one archaeological feature was encountered, a cut which may have reprsented a shallow pit. Fragments of Onion bottle glass and pottery indicated a late 17th to early 18th century date. The development was not thought to threaten archaeological remains. [Au(abr)] 2/639 (C.29.F046) TR TOWN YARD, DOVER WESTERN DOCKS Repost on Archaeological Evaluation Trenching at Town Yard, Dover Western Docks Parfitt, K Canterbury : Canterbury Archaeological Trust, 2002, 25pp, figs, tabs, refs Areas of early post-medieval buildings were located during the evaluation. Some human remains were noted, as well as other finds, although nothing predating the post-medieval period was recorded and no trace of the lost medieval chapel of Our Lady of Pity recovered. However, no evidence for this was found, and it was thought that this feature was located further north. No other archaeological remains were encountered. [Au(abr)] 2/641 (C.29.F032) TQ HARRIETSHAM SCHOOL, HARRIETSHAM An Archaeological Evaluation at Harrietsham School, Tongs Meadow, West Street, Harrietsham, Kent Stevenson, J Ditchling : Archaeology South-East, 2002, 13pp, figs, tabs, refs Several features were encountered, including a quarry pit, a prehistoric pit, a gully, a clearance feature and a Late Iron Age-early Roman ditch. Other undated features were also recorded. There seemed to be a bias towards the south-east of the site for the concentration of ancient remains. 7 JAMES WHATMAN WAY, MAIDSTONE James Whatman Way, Maidstone, Kent. Archaeological Evaluation Buss, B Oxford : Oxford Archaeology, 2002, 14pp, figs, tabs, refs Work undertaken by: Oxford Archaeology The evaluation revealed building and structural remains that formed part of the 18th century cavalry barracks. No earlier remains were identified. The site was levelled and covered with several metres of made ground. Post-medieval deposits survived under this in the eastern part of the site. [Au(abr)] Archaeological periods represented: PM 2/643 (C.29.F030) TQ KNIGHTRIDER STREET, MAIDSTONE An Archaeological Evaluation at Knighrider Street, Maidstone, Kent Stevenson, J Ditchling : Archaeology South-East, 2002, 17pp, figs, tabs, refs Three intercutting features were revealed, two of which were sampled and proved to be pits of 13th- 14th century date. In a seperate trench, a ditch of 19th century date, a medieval pit and a further undated pit were recorded. A backfilled cellar of at least 17th-18th century date was also noted. The medieval features were thought to be the consequence of activity to the rear of the medieval building. However, no artefacts were recovered that could date the feature, thoght to predate the building of the Corpus Christi Hall in the fourteenth century. 8 Shepway 2/646 (C.29.F035) TR LAND AT THE CEDARS, BARROW HILL, SELLINDGE An Archaeological Evaluation of Land at The Cedars, Barrow Hill, Sellindge, Kent Haslam, A London : CgMs, 2002, 24pp, figs Work undertaken by: CgMs, Pre-Construct Archaeology A possible palaeochannel was identifed. Other than this, no archaeological remains were recovered. [Au(abr)] Archaeological periods represented: PA 2/647 (C.29.F022) TR LYMINGE ANGLO-SAXON CEMETERY Report on Evaluation Trenching at Lyminge Anglo-Saxon Cemetery Parfitt, K Dover : Dover Archaeological Group, 2002, 8pp, figs, tabs, refs Work undertaken by: Dover Archaeological Group The evaluation was carried out in advance of a proposed equestrian arena in an area close to a known Anglo-Saxon cemetery, of which the limits had not been completely defined. A total of 43 certain or probable graves were encountered, including two cremation burials, rarely found in east Kent. Metal detector sweeps of all the unexcavated graves gave clear indications of grave-goods in some cases, although no attempt was made to excavate them. Post holes, ditches and gullies were also present at the site. The cemetery was thought to now contain well over 500 bodies. Pottery from the site produced a tentative date of AD 5th-6th century. It was suggested that the arena should be built over the cemetery, thereby protecting it. [Au(abr)] Archaeological periods represented: EM, MD 2/648 (C.29.F013) TR SOUTHLANDS SCHOOL, DYMCHURCH ROAD, NEW ROMNEY An Archaeological Evaluation at Southlands School, Dymchurch Road, New Romney, Kent Wragg, E Brockley : Pre-Construct Archaeology Ltd, 2002, 23pp, figs, tabs Work undertaken by: Pre-Construct Archaeology Ltd Sealed between sand from the great storm of 1287 and garden soil and concrete deposits were bone fragments, pottery and shells. These were thought to represent a series of activity deposits associated with the beaching of ships and their cargoes in the medieval period. Pits were found in some trenches, filled with similar deposits and sealed by the same layers. One such feature was a fire pit with an exposed flue at the southern end. The rubbish pit was thought to be of local importance, as it shows evidence for pre-16th century occupation of the site. No remains dating before 19th century made ground were encountered. [Au(adp)] Archaeological periods represented: MO 2/651 (C.29.F008) TQ LOWER ROAD, FAVERSHAM An Archaeologcal Evaluation at Lower Road, Faversham Rady, J & Weeks, J Canterbury : Canterbury Archaeological Trust, 2002, 19pp, figs, refs The evaluation indicated significant disturbance to the site, primarily by quarrying. However, the north-eastern zone was shown to contain significant archaeology, indicative of medieval land management and perhaps domestic activity. Pottery in this area indicated a short occupation period in the early to mid 13th century. This was an unexpected discovery, and would be severely impacted by the proposed development. An Archaeological Evaluation Report Mackinder, T London : Museum of London Archaeology Service, 2002, 30pp, figs, tabs, refs Work undertaken by: Museum of London Archaeology Service The site was a haulage yard located in a former chalk quarry. There was no evidence of Anglo-Saxon burial, as found in excavations in 1882 in the vicinity of the site. The results of the evaluation have helped to refine the initial assessment of the site's archaeological potential. This concluded that the proposed redevelopment would only affect deposits of a late 19th/early 20th century date. [Au(abr)] 2/653 (C.29.F041) TR

10 WOODS COURT, BADLESMERE Archaeological Evaluation Trenching at Woods Court, Badlesmere Ward, A Canterbury : Canterbury Archaeological Trust, 2002, 19pp, figs, tabs The evaluation was carried out in advance of extensions. A series of deposits dating to the 18th century were located, along with a well. Apart from this and a few sherds of post-medieval pottery, no archaeological remains were noted. However, it was accepted that earlier remains were probably present elsewhere on the site. [Au(abr)] Archaeological periods represented: PM Thanet 2/654 (C.29.F006) TR RAMSGATE ROAD, BROADSTAIRS 189 Ramsgate Road, Broadstairs, Kent Boast, E J Broadstairs : Trust for Thanet Archaeology, 2002, 15pp, figs, tabs, refs The evaluation was carried out in advance of the construction of five new houses. One trench contained an archaeological feature, a sub-circular cut fillet with fragments of burnt flint and charcoal flecks. This was overlain by a naturally derived homogeneous deposit containing a single sherd of Early Iron Age pottery. Contemporary pottery sherds and bone were also found in Trench 2. An Archaeological Evaluation Report Appleton, K London : Museum of London Archaeology Service, 2002, 20pp, figs, tabs, refs Work undertaken by: Museum of London Archaeology Service The evaluation revealed post-medieval features to the north and north-esast of the site underlying a reworked subsoil. The development was not thought to impact upon the remains. [Au(adp)] Archaeological periods represented: PM 2/656 (C.29.F007) TR FORMER BON SECOURS NURSING HOME, RAMSGATE Former Bon Secours Nursing Home, Junction of London Road and Pegwell Road, Ramsgate, Kent. Archaeological Evaluation Boast, E J Broadstairs : Trust for Thanet Archaeology, 2002, 33pp, figs, tabs, refs Archaeological features were observed in three out of the 17 trenches excavated. These related to Iron Age and Roman settlement, in the form of ditches, pits and linear features. It was thought that the site related to a settlement. Snail shells and a single sherd of late 1st-early 2nd century pottery were recovered. [Au(abr)] Archaeological periods represented: RO 2/658 (C.29.F001) TR LAND TO THE REAR OF PEGWELL AVENUE AND SILVERDALE ROAD, RAMSGATE Land to the Rear of Pegwell Avenue and Silverdale Road, Ramsgate, Kent. Archaeological Evaluation Boast, E J Broadstairs : Trust for Thanet Archaeology, 2002, 4pp, figs Although located in an area of considerable archaeological potential, the evaluation revealed no archaeological finds or features. This was explained by the natural sloped of the site being susceptible to erosion. [Au(abr)] 2/659 (C.29.F011) TR QUEENSDOWN RIDING AND LIVERY CENTRE, WOODCHURCH Queensdown Riding and Livery Centre. Castlemayne Avenue, Woodchurch, Thanet, Kent Boast, E J Broadstairs : Trust for Thanet Archaeology, 2002, 29pp, figs, tabs, refs The evaluation identified a Saxon Grubenhaus, as wella s four smaller features. Artefacts found daed fron the later prehistoric to middle Saxon periods and included pottery, animal bone, iron finds, glass, worked bone and stone. Comparison with other sites of a similar nature would help shed some light on the function of the place, it was suggested. Archaeological Evaluation Boast, E J Broadstairs : Trust for Thanet Archaeology, 2002, 15pp, figs, tabs, refs The evaluation was carried out in advance of a hangar extension. A ditch feature running through three trenches was identified as Bronze Age, and probably defensive in origin. This was in keeping with 11

12 nearby sites, recently discovered. Post holes also discovered may have been part of a palisade, or may have related to earlier occupation. The site was thought to be of some significance, as few of this date were known in Kent. Archaeological Evaluation Boast, E J Broadstairs : Trust for Thanet Archaeology, 2002, 28pp, figs, tabs, refs The archaeological results indicated three main occupation phases on the site-late Iron Age, early Roman and post-medieval. A Late Iron Age metalled feature was encountered, thought to be a yard surface and dated by ceramic evidence. 1st-2nd century ditches, probably field boundaries, were also recorded, as well as pits and gullies. Evidence for occupation of the site until the late medieval preriod was sparse. A farm infrastruture was inferred for the post-medieval phase of excavation, due to the discovery of a juvenile pig skeleton. The site then became Upton House and gardens. [Au(adp)] Archaeological periods represented: LIA, PM, RO Tonbridge and Malling 2/662 (C.29.F024) TQ LAND AT PETER'S PIT, WOULDHAM AND THE PROPOSED MEDWAY CROSSING An Archaeological Evaluation of Land at Peter's Pit, Wouldham and the Proposed Medway Crossing, Kent Stevenson, J Ditchling : Arcaheology South-East, 2002, 50pp, figs, tabs, refs 75 trenches were located over 6 seperate areas. Area 1 produced two features, one of which was Late Iron Age to Roman in date. Area 2 revealed a possible field boundary and a dense area of ancient activity of Roman date. Area 3 revealed the remains of a Roman building and limited evidence of industrial evidence related to 19th century cement manufacture. Area 4 exposed an Iron Age post hole and possible gully. Area 5 was populated with post-holes and pits, all potentially prehistoric. Area 6 showed up the limited remains of a gully, a possible trackway and pits of an uncertain date, and a postmedieval ditch. [Au(abr)] Archaeological periods represented: IA, LIA, PM, PR, R 12
