1 Uniform/Appearance Policy This uniform/appearance policy will be reviewed annually by the pupil and personnel committee of the governing body. Date of last review: Spring 2017 (Revised August 2017) Date of next review: Summer 2018 Carlton le Willows uniform is one of the main outward signs by which the local community recognises and makes judgements about our pupils. It is important for pupils and the that the way pupils present themselves is positive and professional and creates the impression of a disciplined and well-ordered establishment. The uniform policy strengthens the ethos of the, promotes cohesion in the pupil community and simplifies the dayto-day management of pupils by determining the boundaries of acceptable dress. It is expected that all pupils will come to the every day in neat, clean uniform, giving a message that they take pride in their appearance and in belonging to the. The support of parents in ensuring a high standard of uniform is expected. Members of staff are required to apply the uniform policy rigorously and consistently, in a class setting, around the campus and, if appropriate, when on a trip or visit. 5 Approved uniform stockists: Schoolwear Solutions, 806 Woodborough Road, Mapperley Just-School Wear Ltd, High Street, Arnold School uniform stockists such as John Lewis, Next; Marks and Spencer; Tesco; Asda and Sainsburys are also permitted as long as uniform items comply with the uniform guidelines. Hair style and colour One aspect of an acceptable appearance is hairstyle. Because this standard is difficult to maintain amongst the various fashions pupils may choose to wear, the has set the following rules to provide a simple and clear standard: Very close shaven hair is not permitted. Pupils who wish to wear a short back and sides style should have the back and sides graded into the longer hair around and on top of the head. Tramlines or other shaved patterns, including razor cuts so as to create lines or designs across the hair or eyebrow are not permitted. Unnatural colours are not permitted (e.g. bright red, pink, blue, green, purple). Extreme contrasts of colour are not permitted (e.g. two tone or dip dyed). Wax / gel can be used, but not to the extent to create an outlandish style. The will not permit a hairstyle which draws notable attention to the student concerned. In short, pupils hair should be conventional, clean and tidy without extremity of cut, colour and style. Students may wear hair bands or hair ribbons, but they must be plain black. It is expected that parents will support policy. Should the circumstance arise where a pupil does attend with any hairstyle which the Head Teacher or his nominees (senior staff or house leaders) believe will undermine the ethos or discipline of the, then the Head Teacher or his nominees will arrange for the pupil to be isolated from their peers. This decision will take account of the practicality of a pupil adopting a different hairstyle and also balance the s obligations under equal opportunities with the need to maintain discipline, cohesion and ensure effective teaching and learning. If the decision is taken to isolate the pupil, as soon as reasonably possible thereafter, the Head Teacher or his nominees will contact the pupil s parent/carer(s) in order to make reasonable arrangements about the pupil s return to lessons while still insisting on the terms of the uniform policy being met. Items of value The accepts no responsibility for the loss, theft or damage of any items of value, as they should not be brought into school. Confiscation Breaches of this policy will result in confiscation of items, such as jewellery. Confiscated items should be taken to student services for secure keeping. Refusal hand in an item for confiscation can lead to exclusion. Parents may collect confiscated property each Friday between 2.30pm and 3.30pm. Items will not be handed back directly to the pupil. 5

6 Lost property Pupils are able to go to student support during morning break, lunchtime or after school to claim lost property. Parents are also invited to ring student support if they feel their child has lost or mislaid an item at school. Parents should label all items of uniform and equipment. Named items can then be returned to pupils as soon as they are handed into student support. Unclaimed lost property is sorted termly. The good quality items are sent to local charity shops. All other items are disposed of. Safety and security Pupils are responsible for looking after their own property. All clothing and other items of personal property should be clearly marked with the owner s name. If a pupil is required to bring a large amount of money into school for the payment of a trip, then it should be handed to student support between 8.20am and 8.30am. Prior to PE lessons it is the responsibility of students to hand any valuable items into a member of the PE department for safe keeping. Parents are expected to keep a particularly watchful eye on their children if they fish or enjoy craft activities. Parents should check regularly their child s school bag and coat pockets to ensure that items such as fishing and utility knives are not brought inadvertently into school. If a pupil discovers that they have accidentally brought onto the premises an item that could be dangerous, they should hand it to student support or a senior teacher immediately. Any pupil found to be in possession of an offensive weapon (see below for definition) or a useable quantity of an illegal drug, will be permanently excluded from the. The has determined that, in addition to the legislative guidance, any knife, irrespective of length, constitutes an offensive weapon and must not be brought into the. Knives, axes, BB guns, air guns, GATT guns, catapults, sling shots and such like will also be deemed to be offensive weapons. Other types of offensive weapons will include lengths of pipe, bats, other blunt instruments, or items judged by the headteacher to be carried with the intention to inflict injury on another individual. This also includes blades removed from pencil sharpeners or craft knives. Equality In formulating this uniform/appearance policy, the has had due regard to the need to eliminate discrimination, advance equality of opportunity and foster good relations. The has considered its obligations under the Equality Act 2010 not to discriminate unlawfully on the grounds of disability, ethnicity, gender, sex, religion or sexual orientation. Racial, cultural and religious needs accommodated within the general uniform/appearance policy are given below. Allowing Muslim students to adhere to the Islamic requirements for dress, for example wearing a plain black full length skirt. Muslim students who choose to wear a headscarf are permitted to do so, but it must be plain black, worn under the blazer and tied in a safe and secure manner during all practical lessons. The wearing of a Niqab is not allowed. 6

7 Jewish students may wear a plain black Kippah and Sikh students may wear a plain black Turban Allowing Muslim and Hindu students to adhere to their religious requirements for dress and allowing them to wear plain black tracksuit bottoms during PE lessons The respects the decision of: o Muslim and Sikh students to grow facial hair (i.e. a beard). o Students with African-Caribbean ethnicity to wear their hair in cornrows or braids. The may allow certain religious amulets to be worn discretely by pupils where there is religious significance. Monitoring compliance The Trust reserves the right to: Decide what constitutes acceptable uniform within the scope of this policy and the s equal opportunities policy. If parents would like clarification on any aspect of uniform they should contact the Head Teacher. Take action against any pupil who breaches the rules on appearance or uniform. This will normally involve sending the pupil home to remedy the matter. However, if inappropriate dress is persisted with, exclusion may be the result. Disclaimer Pupils are not required to have expensive personal possessions at school. Any pupil who brings such an item(s) into school does so at their own risk and school will not be held responsible for any loss or damage. 7
