4 COMPONENT DESCRIPTION Helmet Shell HELMET SHELL The ballistic composite helmet shell (Figure 2) incorporates state-of-the-art materials to enhance protection with reduced weight. It is available in four sizes. Retention Assembly The integrated chin/nape retention assembly (Figure 2) provides stability and comfort. It includes a nape pad with adjustable straps and an adjustable chin strap. CHIN STRAP NAPE PAD Figure 2. Helmet Shell and Retention Assembly Suspension Systems Your helmet is equipped with either an adjustable sizing pad suspension system or a headband and crown pad suspension system. These two systems are described on Page 3. WARNING Adjustable sizing pad suspension system: For impact protection, the 1/2" thick foam pad must be kept inside each cloth cover of the adjustable pad suspension system at all times, and the pads must be properly installed inside the helmet. 2

5 Adjustable Sizing Pad Suspension System The adjustable sizing pad suspension system (Figure 3) consists of a set of eight sizing pads attached with hook and pile to the inside of the helmet shell. Three pads are attached at the front, three at the rear, and two in the crown area. The crown pads can be placed farther apart to accommodate an over-the-head headset. Each sizing pad consists of three impact-absorbing foam filler pads (two ¼ thick and one ½ thick) inside a cover with a hook/pile closure. The ¼ foam pads can be removed or added to allow sizing adjustments for optimum stability and comfort. Headband and Crown Pad Suspension System The headband and crown pad suspension system (Figure 4) has a foam-filled, leather-covered adjustable headband attached with webbing loops to a webbing strap that is secured to the helmet shell. It also has a ventilated mesh crown pad that can be raised or lowered to provide the proper height adjustment. PADS Figure 3. 6 HELMET PREPARATION Helmet preparation includes determining helmet size, making sure all parts are included, and checking the fit. Determining Helmet Size Helmet sizes are small, medium, large, and X-large. To determine proper helmet size, you must follow the proper procedure for your helmet suspension system. If your helmet has a sizing pad suspension system, follow the procedure that begins below on this page. If your helmet has a headband suspension system, follow the procedure that begins on Page 6. For Helmets with Sizing Pad Suspension System If your helmet has a sizing pad suspension system, you must (1) measure and record the wearer s head length, (2) measure and record the wearer s head breadth, (3) measure and record the wearer s head circumference, and (4) select the helmet size based upon the parameters in Table 1 on Page 5. Tools/Equipment Needed Caliper Ruler Tape measure Measuring Head Length 1. Use a caliper and a ruler as shown in Figure 5 to measure the distance (to the nearest 1/16 inch) from the point between the eyebrows to the back of the head. This is the head length. Ensure that the caliper touches the skin lightly and does not indent the skin. 2. Record the measurement. Measuring Head Breadth 1. Use a caliper and a ruler as shown in Figure 6 to measure the maximum head width (to the nearest 1/16 inch) above the ears. This is the head breadth. Ensure that the caliper touches the skin lightly and does not indent the skin. 2. Record the measurement. Continued on next page POINTS TO MEASURE Measurement point at back of head Caliper Measurement point between eyebrows Figure 5.
