1 Brinton Student Dress Code 2009 Current Updated July 1, 2014 The guidelines listed below are a supplement to the Mesa Public Schools dress and grooming standards. Additional information can be located on the MPS web site under the governing board policy JFCA and JFCA-R. The principal, in consultation with the School Improvement Advisory Council, is authorized to supplement the standards as necessary to address specific dress or grooming issues in the school. (JFCA-R) Hats Off in the Building Hats may be worn outside for protection from the sun but any and all hats must be removed when students enter the building. Hats must be generic and not depict inappropriate language or messages. Any do rags, handkerchiefs or other head apparel except for medical or religious reasons are prohibited. Shirt Straps Must be at Least 1 ½ Inches Wide Spaghetti straps and muscle shirts with less than 1 ½ inches of fabric may not be worn at school. Undergarments (bras) must fit the top appropriately and straps should not be seen.
2 Shorts and Skirts Must Be at Least 1 inch Beyond Tip of Finger The bottom hem of the shorts and skirts must be at least 1 inch longer than the fingertips. Leggings are not permitted by themselves. Leggings may only be worn if under appropriate length skirt, shorts or shirt. (No short shorts or miniskirts.) Tops Can Not Be See-Thru and No Pajamas Tops that are see-thru cannot be worn without appropriate attire underneath---for example an appropriate top. See-thru tops over a spaghetti strap top are not allowed. No pajamas or clothing that is designed for some other purpose such as a bathing suit or some types of athletic wear. Shoes For safety reasons, students are to wear closed-toed and closed heeled shoes. No slippers, sandals, flip-flops, Heelies, clogs, platform or skate shoes.
3 Make-Up, Tattoos, Chains, and Dangerous Jewelry Stay at Home as Well Nose rings, lip rings and body piercing are not permitted. Pierced ears are permitted but the earrings should be a stud. Hoop earrings are not permitted. Body art and tattoos are also prohibited. These items are unsafe or disruptive to the school environment and should not be worn at school. Shirts Must Cover the Stomach, Back and Chest Any shirt which does not cover the waist is inappropriate. No bellies, belly buttons, or cleavage should be showing. Belts Must Be Contained Within Belt Loops Hanging belts or chains are not allowed. These may include wallet chains, long key chains or belts that are much larger than needed and the excess length hangs from the clasp.
4 Pants Must Sit At the Waist and Fit Appropriately--No Sagging and No Holes Pants that are not worn at any place other than the waist are not allowed. Any drooping or bagging is inappropriate. Any display of undergarments (boxers, underwear, undershirts) is in violation of the dress code. Clothing must be in good repair and have no tears or holes in them. Leggings are not permitted by themselves. Leggings may only be worn if under appropriate length skirt or shorts. (No short shorts or mini-skirts.) Hair, Bandanas, Hairnets, Do-Rags Stay at Home Students may not dye or color their hair in a shade that is not consistent with natural human hair. Bandanas cannot be used to signify gang membership. Wearing of colors or other gang paraphernalia is prohibited.
5 Messages on Clothing or Accessories Must Be Appropriate Language, Subjects or Depictions for the School Setting There are many items available for sale which are offensive and inappropriate for the school setting. These may include but are not limited to: inappropriate language, inappropriate reference to a group of people or individuals, slang/slurs, innuendos, depiction of inappropriate acts, illicit/illegal drugs or activities, tobacco, alcohol. Any item which causes a disruption to the school will not be allowed. Regular Bathing and Grooming is Expected of ALL Students Violations of the Dress Code Incident I Warning - Students in violation of the dress code will be asked to report to the health office. They will be required to change into an appropriate clothing alternative. A phone call to the parents will be made by the teacher or nurse. If time permits a parent may be allowed to bring a clothing item to school. Incident II In addition to the above, a second phone call home to parents will be made by the principal. Incident III and more In addition to what occurs in incident I and II, further disciplinary action will occur and could include: detention, ticket, removal from class, suspension, etc.
