1 Create your own handmade drum lampshade! Using your own you can make a one-of-a-kind lampshade for a lampbase or to use as a pendant to hang from the ceiling. Included in the kit: 1 x Lampshade ring set comprising 1 x top ring, 1 x bottom ring (with lamp holder) 1 x sheet of adhesive lampshade PVC 2 x small rolls of double-sided tape: 1 roll of red tape for sticking the rings to the PVC and folding in one of the short ends of the and 1 x clear tape for sticking the back seam. 1 x small rounded end tool Fabric requirements: A piece of that is the correct size for your ring set: 20cm - 1.0m x 30cm 25cm - 1.0m x 30cm 30cm - 1.1m x 30cm 40cm - 1.5m x 40cm 50cm - 1.7m x 40cm The best s are lightweight s such as cotton quilting, poplins, linen, etc. For the best results avoid heavy upholstery s, s with textured finishes and very loose weave s which fray easily. Basic tools required: Pair of sharp scissors Ruler Pencil Small kitchen knife with a pointy end Time required: You should be able to complete this project in about two hours. Preparations: Lay your out flat on a table. Position the PVC on the to include the parts of the design you would like to feature in your lampshade. Leaving about 20mm all around the edge of the PVC, trim away the rest of the. Iron your very well to eliminate any creases. Clear yourself a workspace and have your tools on hand. 2 Let s get started! POSITIONING THE LAMPSHADE PVC 1. Place the PVC, grid side down, on the wrong your and position it so that it lies exactly where you want it, making sure that any obvious lines, patterns, etc line up evenly across the width of the. Using a pencil, place some very small marks across the on both long sides of the PVC, to mark the exact position you require. Along one short the PVC, draw a continuous line. 2. Using your scissors, trim along this line. Refer to this drawing to see how you should place the PVC on the wrong your and mark its position. Place small pencil marks along the PVC at the top and bottom Right Wrong On one short end of the PVC, draw a line with a pencil, along the as shown. 3 Short end of PVC Short end of PVC PVC overhangs by 10mm on this end. 3. Peel back about 30mm of the backing paper on one of the short ends of the PVC (please note that your backing paper is marked with a grid) and crease it gently across the fold making sure not to touch the sticky surface. 4. Turn the PVC over so that the sticky side (side marked with grid) is facing down, making sure that the exposed sticky part of the PVC doesn t touch the. Line up all your pencil marks on the long edges so that the PVC is in the right position and so that the short end of the PVC with the folded backing paper hangs over the cut end of the by 10mm. Double check that the overhang is a consistent 10mm. When you are satisfied that the PVC is in the right position, gently tap the sticky surface down onto the making sure that the sticky 10mm overhang doesn t stick to the table. 5. Continue to remove the backing paper and roll the lampshade paper onto your making sure that you continue to keep the PVC lined up with your pencil marks. Smooth the surface of the PVC with your hand as you go along, to ensure that it is stuck down well. 6. Turn your (with PVC attached) over so that the good side is showing. Smooth the whole surface with your hands making sure that everything is smooth and the lampshade PVC is well adhered.

4 TRIMMING THE FABRIC TO SIZE Now that your is adhered to the lampshade paper, it needs to be trimmed to size on the remaining three edges. The following steps will show you how to do this. Here is a sketch that shows how it will look when it is all trimmed. This will help you follow steps 7-12 to trim the as shown. Right Wrong Fabric is 10mm shorter than the lampshade paper on this end. (Steps 2 & 4) 11mm overhang of on the bottom (Step 10) 11mm overhang of on the top. (Steps 7, 8 & 9) Tiny tapers on top and bottom this end (Steps 11 & 12) 10mm overhang 7. Trim the remaining short end of the so that it overhangs the lampshade paper by 10mm. 8. Apply a length of the red double-sided tape to the end of the lampshade paper. 9. Remove the red covering on the tape and fold the over adhering it well to the tape. Make sure the is folded hard on the edge of the lampshade paper. 10. Measure out 11mm from the bottom long edge and draw a line across the full width of the. Measure out 11mm from the top long edge and draw a line across the full width of the. These will be your cutting lines. DO NOT CUT THE FABRIC YET!

5 Add the taper here. Refer to the drawing on the previous page. Cut away excess 11. At the end where the is folded in, taper the top and bottom edges out by about 2mm for a lighter and 3mm for a heavier for the last 10mm as shown. Trim along the lines you have drawn on both the top and bottom long edges. Tape lies just in from the folded edge. 12. On a diagonal, snip off the folded edge as shown, on both the top and bottom long edges outside the line of the lampshade paper. This is to eliminate bulk when the is folded around the frame. JOINING THE PVC TO THE RINGS Now you can assemble your lampshade by attaching the PVC to the rings. 13. Apply a strip of the clear tape to the folded end. Make sure that it does not overhang the on the outside edge. In the photo, it has been marked to look red so that you can see where it is. 14. (ABOVE) Apply the red double-sided tape to the outside edges of both lampshade rings. Press in place securely all around the surface of the rings and then remove the red backing so that the clear sticky tape shows on both rings. Avoid touching the tape with your fingers. 15. (LEFT) Place the rings on the lampshade PVC starting at the end where you have just removed the strip of. Make sure both rings are right on the edge of the lampshade PVC but not on the. The ring with bulb holder goes on the bottom of your. (Make sure that the part that holds the bulb is facing into the middle not facing to the bottom.) Start rolling the rings at the same pace along the edge of the lampshade PVC. You might like to get someone to help you at this stage but it is achievable with only one set of hands.

6 16. Keep rolling and the cylindrical shape will start to take form. 17. Remove the clear backing (again shown as red so that you can see how it works) from the last piece of adhesive tape that joins the back seam. Use the tip of the small kitchen knife to ease up the backing tape as it is very sticky and gooey!! Continue rolling until the two ends meet up. 18. Roll the lampshade so that the join is on the table and then press the join together really well from the inside. 19. Using the tip of the scissors, snip a small cut in the allowance in line with the three wires in the base of the frame. Cut away a small piece of the inside here where the two ends overlap at the top and bottom. 20. Using the tip of the scissors, cut away a small piece of from the inside where the two edges overlap at both the top and bottom. (This photo is obviously from another lampshade!!)

7 21. Fold in the allowance around the ring making sure that it is touching the ring closely. When you have creased it where the PVC edge is, fold the down neatly to touch the rings. 22. Start working your way around the top and bottom rings using the small rounded end knife to push the up and in behind the ring to touch the double sided tape. This will secure the in place. 23. Continue working your way carefully around both rings making sure that the is tucked in nice and tight. This will give a professional look. 24. Tuck the neatly around the wires on the bottom ring. Pay particular attention to where the two ends overlap. If the doesn t seem to reach around back under the rings where the join is, a little dob of craft glue will do the trick. You can use the pointy end of a kebab skewer to apply the glue. 25. When you have finished each end, look at it from the top to see if there are any little bits you have missed. You might like to go around again on both ends using the little round ended knife to make doubly sure that the is tucked in nice and tight.
