1 1. Archer/Man at Arms SOFT KIT REQUIREMENTS This document is the recommended requirements for soft kit for a man at arms or archer in Company of the Dove. Deviation from these requirements is to be discussed with the draper/president of Company of the Dove and fully referenced with two primary references before this will be allowed with public performances. Soft kit refers to soft clothing tunic, undershirt, chausses/hose, braies, hood, shoes, socks, pouches, belts, garters. Examples of soft kit: Figure 1 Figure 2 Explanation of terms: Tunic a long sleeved simple garment garment, reaching from the shoulders to somewhere between the hips and ankles mid 14 th century length was normally somewhere from the knees to the ankles no shorter. Undershirt a long sleeved loose fitting short which reached from the shoulders to the hips, sometimes longer Chausses close fitting legs which connect to the top of the braies and reach from the ankles to the tips of the toes. Chausses are normally tied onto holes in the braies. Chausses may be attached to the braies at the front or sides. Chausses may have either full feet or stirrups to hold them down. Hosen close fitting tights, secured with a drawstring. Feet can either be full feet or stirrups under the feet to hold them down. Braies Braies are undergarments in the form of pants. The braies are normally natural coloured linen. The braies are held up by either a roll over or a tie string inside the top hem. There are holes so that the chausses can be attached. Hood hood fits over the head and can have either a short or long liripipe down the back. Edge can be rounded as in Figure 1, or dagged as in Figure 2

2 Boots Mid 14 th century boots were usually ankle length for an archer, with leather straps to tie them up 1. Tunic You can either buy your clothing from the providers listed below, or buy the linen and make it yourself. If you make it yourself, make sure you stick to the specifications. If unsure, ask questions... Specifications: Must be linen Non visible seams may be machine sewn Visible seams (hems, collar etc) must be handsewn Pattern must be period accurate (see example patterns below) Sleeves must be full length Collars must be rounded or V shaped (see patterns) Colours must be according to acceptable colours document No buttons Pattern 1 Pattern 2
