2 Hairstylist Practical Examination Information for Candidates This exam will test the practical knowledge and skills required to practice in the trade. This document lists the tasks that the Examiner will be examining throughout the practical exam. The minimum pass for each component is indicated in each section. General Information DO: Arrive for registration at 8:00 a.m. o Present to the Examiner at registration: - photo identification - Verification of Completion form or Pocket Card or letter from Apprenticeship MB - Waiver of Liability form (completed and signed by model and witness) Be organized and ready to start the practical exam at 8:30 a.m. Bring all supplies, equipment, and sanitized implements to perform and demonstrate all components of the exam. Please see Professional Equipment and Supplies Required on page 4. You will be provided only with a work station (salon chair and mirror). Use professional products in original containers (no pharmacy brands) or clearly labeled containers. Bring one male (preferred) and one female (preferred) model. Please see Model Requirements on page 3. Bring 2 mannequins for the afternoon components of the practical examination. You may bring an additional model if you do not have 2 mannequins. Have a professional appearance. Maintain professional conduct (attitude, body language, safe work practices) throughout the exam: you will be marked on this. Complete each component of the exam and clean up after each service within the time limit. Extra time will not be given to complete a component. NOTE: at any time throughout the exam the Examiner could ask you questions about your work. The Examiner also has the authority to stop the exam if you injure the model or to prevent injury to the model. DO NOT: Use cell phones during the exam (cell phones must be turned off). Assist other candidates during the exam. Leave during the exam without permission. Ask Examiners questions regarding examination results during the exam.

3 Model Criteria for Practical Examination Male and Female Models MUST: Be a minimum 18 years of age. Have enough hair length for candidate to remove a minimum of one inch of hair. Male model to arrive no later than 8:15 a.m., female model to arrive no later than 9:00 a.m.(if third model to be used for afternoon components, h/she should arrive no later than 12:15 p.m.) Have read and signed the Waiver of Liability prior to the exam. Models must NOT: Use a cell phone during the exam (cell phones must be turned off). Model must not be a current or former hairstylist, esthetician or candidate of these trades. *NOTE: Following the practical exam the instructor will record the practical exam grades onto the Verification of Completion form. 4 Exam Schedule and Components 8:00 a.m. Registration, set-up and exam information 8:30-9:20 9:30-10:20 10:30-11:15 1. Clipper cut (male model preferred) 2. Haircut with elevation (female model preferred) 3. Blow dry, curling iron, comb-out 11:30-12:30 p.m. LUNCH (it is advisable to bring a lunch) 12:30-1:00 1:10-1:25 1:35-1:50 2:00-2:15 2:25-2:55 4. Rollers, dryer (mannequin #1 or model) 5. Mock colour (mannequin #2 or model) 6. Simulated foils (mannequin #2 or model) 7. Permanent wave wrap (mannequin #2 or model) 8. Comb-out (mannequin #1 or model) Marking Criteria Candidate s performance of task Meets or exceeds industry standard Examiner s mark Description Candidate shows competency in task or high level of skill and proficiency in task. Performance meets or is above industry standard in preparation, technique and workmanship. Does not meet industry standard 0 Candidate shows little or no competency in task. Performance is below industry standard in preparation, technique and workmanship. The number of checkmarks ( ) required to pass each component is indicated at the bottom of each component section.

5 Professional Equipment and Supplies Required Blow dryer with concentrator nozzle attachment Mannequins two (2) (Maximum hair length: 9 inches) Brushes a variety for tasks required Mannequin stand or clamp Cape for chemical/shampoo/cutting Neck duster Clips: 8 clips/jaw clips Neck strips Colour bowl Perm rods three different rod diameters Colour brush Professional magnetic rollers: Combs: minimum 3 diameters cutting comb (3 of each used - minimum of nine rollers in tail comb total) Curling iron (no spring irons) Cutting tools: Blending shears Clippers with no blade setting coarser than 000 (no guards) Shears - minimum 5.5 (or longer) Disinfectant Disinfectant jar End papers Foils Gloves Professional products: styling/finishing products shampoo, conditioner coloured shampoo or conditioner (for mock colour) shaving cream Razors: folding straight razor (with no guards or teeth) razor with guard or straight handle razor (optional) Rollers/pin curl clips Spray water bottle Towels Items NOT allowed for the practical examination Clipper guards Cutting stools Flat Iron Shear holsters Spring iron

6 1. Clipper cut (clipper over comb) (male model preferred; 50 minutes) 2. Model s hair is clean and free of product. 3. Model correctly seated and draped. 4. Towel or neck strip in place. 5. Minimum one-inch removed from full head of hair. 6. Hairline has zero elevation, taper (fade, not blocked). 7. Grooming and outlining around ears, sides of nape and neck with shears, razor or clipper. 8. Dexterity in freehand and reverse backhand with razor at sideburns. 9. Dexterity with all shears, clippers and comb. 10. Clipper work blended into haircut. 11. Evenness, balance and contour in the length of haircut. 12. Even perimeter or design line in haircut. 13. Effective trimming of one of the following: eyebrows, moustache, ears or nostril hairs. 14. Hair clippings removed from client or clothing. 15. Professional appearance of candidate. 16. Professional conduct of candidate (attitude, body language, safe work practices). 17. Work station and implements maintained in a clean and organized manner. Clipper cut 1-11 Does not meet industry standard Fail Meets or exceeds industry standard Pass

7 2. Haircut with elevation (female model preferred; 50 minutes) (minimum of 2 cutting tools to be used) 2. Model correctly seated and draped. 3. Appropriate shampoo and conditioning service. 4. Hair distributed in at least 4 sections. Partings clean. 5. Minimum 1-inch removed from full head of hair. 6. Dexterity in handling scissors and other cutting tools and comb. 7. Evenness, balance and contour in the length of haircut. 8. Even perimeter or design line in haircut. 9. Professional conduct of candidate (attitude, body language, safe work practices). 10. Work station and implements maintained in a clean and organized manner. Haircut with elevation 1-6 Does not meet industry standard Fail 7-10 Meets or exceeds industry standard Pass

8 3. Blow dry, curling iron, comb-out (45 minutes) 2. Correct sectioning and sub-sectioning. 3. Use of professional styling/finishing product. 4. Correct coordination of blower with brush. 5. Correct use of concentrator nozzle. 6. Hair is completely dried. 7. Volume and balance in finished hair. 8. Scalp is protected while using curling iron. 9. Base size relates to curling iron size (width and length). 10. Curling iron is moving continually. 11. Dexterity with the curling iron from scalp to ends of hair. 12. Hair has C shapings and/or movement. 13. Hair has clean and smooth ends. 14. Uniform, smooth, polished, professional finish. 15. Professional conduct of candidate (attitude, body language, safe work practices). 16. Work station and implements maintained in a clean and organized manner. Blow dry, curling iron, comb-out 1-11 Does not meet industry standard Fail Meets or exceeds industry standard Pass

9 LUNCH 4. Rollers, dryer (mannequin # 1 or model; 30 minutes) 2. Rollers: minimum 3 diameters (3 of each used minimum of 9 rollers in total.) (No end papers.) 3. Three different pincurl types demonstrated (minimum of 3 of each type). (No end papers) 4. Clean sections. 5. Tension smooth, clipped correctly. 6. Dexterity with comb, rollers, clips and setting lotion application. 7. Professional conduct of candidate (attitude, body language, safe work practices). 8. Work station and implements maintained in a clean and organized manner. Rollers, dryer 1-5 Does not meet industry standard Fail 6-8 Meets or exceeds industry standard Pass

10 5. Mock colour (mannequin # 2 or model; 15 minutes) 2. Correct hair sectioning and sub-sectioning. 3. Appropriate product, implements and equipment used (gloves used). 4. Application technique (retouch/virgin at examiner s discretion). 5. Dexterity in use of applicator brush. 6. Adequate product saturation. 7. Professional conduct of candidate (attitude, body language, safe work practices). 8. Work station and implements maintained in a clean and organized manner. Mock colour 1-5 Does not meet industry standard Fail 6-8 Meets or exceeds industry standard Pass

11 6. Simulated foils (mannequin # 2 or model; 15 minutes) 2. Appropriate product, implements and equipment used (gloves used). 3. Correct hair sectioning and sub-sectioning (2 slices, 2 weaves). 4. Secure foil close to scalp (single fold). 5. Dexterity in use of applicator brush. 6. Adequate product saturation. 7. Professional conduct of candidate (attitude, body language, safe work practices). 8. Work station and implements maintained in a clean and organized manner. Simulated foils 1-5 Does not meet industry standard Fail 6-8 Meets or exceeds industry standard Pass

12 7. Permanent wave wrap (mannequin # 2 or model; 15 minutes) 2. Clean and correct sectioning on front side section of head. 3. End paper technique (double flat wrap, single flat wrap or bookend single paper wrap). 4. Rod placement (1/2 off base). 5. Appropriate wrap (minimum of 3 different rod diameters). 6. Appropriate rod usage (length). 7. Smooth clean ends (no fish hooks). 8. Even hair distribution and tension on rods. 9. Elastic band placement (no picks). 10. Dexterity in use of implements and equipment (rods, papers and comb). 11. Professional conduct of candidate (attitude, body language, safe work practices). 12. Work station and implements maintained in a clean and organized manner. Permanent wave wrap 1-8 Does not meet industry standard Fail 9-12 Meets or exceeds industry standard Pass

13 8. Comb-out (mannequin # 1 or model; 30 minutes) 2. Hair thoroughly brushed after removal of rollers. 3. Cushioning correctly executed. 4. Splits, holes and backcombing indentations hidden. 5. Dexterity in use of brushes and combs. 6. Hair has C shapings and/or movement. 7. Professional finish in balance, form and design. 8. Professional conduct of candidate (attitude, body language, safe work practices). 9. Work station and implements maintained in a clean and organized manner. Comb-out 1-6 Does not meet industry standard Fail 7-9 Meets or exceeds industry standard Pass
