1 No: 11 -Week 4 Term 3 Wednesday 3rd August 2016 Theodore State School has just commenced the journey of becoming a PBL School (Positive Behaviour for Learning). About PBL Positive Behaviour for Learning, known as PBL, is an evidence-based whole school systems approach that: addresses the diverse academic and social needs of every student to support them to be successful supports students in early childhood settings through to senior years of schooling enables schools to establish a continuum of supports that are intensified to meet the needs of every student is team driven, using a problem solving approach (data, systems and practices) that engages students, parents and all school staff establishes positive social expectations for all in the school community provides a framework for the school and its community to collectively support the wellbeing of every student. When implemented well: students respond positively as they have been taught what is expected of them staff deliver consistent responses to student learning and behaviour students feel safe and cared for at school. Their parents, family and community are more involved in their school unproductive and challenging behaviour can be significantly reduced for most students Our School Rules that underpin our values and expectations are: Be Respectful Be Responsible Be a Learner Congratulations to all of our students who exceeded our Attendance target of 95% attendance at school. Every day at school matters and impacts on student learning. Well done to our athletes who have made it to the next round and will be competing in Rockhampton this Thursday and Friday. This year for the first time primary and secondary students will be competing at the same carnival over the two days. It will be certainly an experience for everyone and two very big days. Head Lice There have been cases of head lice reported within the school so please check your child s hair. VET Training Today I am going to Biloela to participate in VET training. VET training provides students with the opportunity to complete Certificate courses. Visit from our Assistant to the Regional Director - Steve Vincent Yesterday I had a visit from Steve Vincent. Steve met with me and discussed school operations and plans for the future direction of the school and ways of working with the community. He visited classrooms and was very impressed with what he saw and congratulated our teaching staff on their dedication and quality teaching. Sue Cannon-Principal

4 Conditioner and combing detection What do I need for the conditioning and combing technique? White hair conditioner An ordinary comb A fine tooth comb Hair clips White tissues or material A magnifying glass A mirror if treating yourself An old toothbrush, safety pin or dental floss Method for the conditioning and combing technique 1 In a well lit area, untangle dry hair with an ordinary comb. 2. Apply hair conditioner to dry hair, covering the whole scalp and all hair from the roots to tips. 3. Comb through the conditioner using an ordinary comb and divide the hair into four or more sections using the hair clips. A mirror helps if you are combing yourself. 4. Change to a head lice comb. 5. Start with a section at the back of the head. Place the teeth of the head lice comb flat against the scalp. Comb the hair from the roots through to the tips. 6. Wipe the comb on the tissue or material after each stroke and check for head lice. Adult lice are easier to see young lice are difficult to see. A magnifying glass will help. You may see some eggs. 7. Comb each section twice until you have combed the whole head. If the comb becomes clogged, use the old toothbrush, dental floss or safety pin to remove the head lice or eggs. 8. If you find head lice: either keep combing the whole head until all the hair conditioner is gone and repeat the conditioner and combing every 2 days until you find no more head lice for 10 consecutive days. You will be removing all the adult lice and any young lice that hatch from the eggs, or choose a chemical treatment option. 9. After treating for head lice, soak combs in soapy hot water (just after boiling) for at least 30 seconds to ensure head lice are killed (this should be done by an adult). When the water has cooled, use an old toothbrush, safety pin or dental floss to remove the debris.
