1 Overview This unit is about carrying out perming and neutralising services. To achieve this unit, you will need to show you have the ability to select and use suitable products and undertake rearranging, winding and neutralising processes within a fixed time scale. The main outcomes of this unit are: 1. maintain effective and safe methods of working when rearranging, perming and neutralising hair 2. analyse the hair and prepare for perming 3. chemically rearrange the hair 4. perm and neutralise hair 5. provide aftercare advice Please note that the Habia Assessment Strategy and Evidence Requirements for these standards are available from the Habia website 1
2 Performance criteria You must be able to: P1 maintain effective and safe methods of working when rearranging, perming and neutralising hair by P1.1 ensuring your client s clothing is effectively protected throughout the service P1.2 wearing personal protective equipment when using perming and neutralising chemicals P1.3 positioning your client to meet the needs of the service without causing them discomfort P1.4 ensuring your own posture and position whilst working minimises fatigue and the risk of injury P1.5 keeping your work area clean and tidy throughout the service P1.6 removing waste immediately at the end of the perming and neutralising service P1.7 using working methods that - minimise the wastage of products - minimise the risk of cross-infection - make effective use of your working time - ensure the use of clean resources - minimise the risk of harm or injury to yourself and clients P1.8 ensuring your personal standards of health and hygiene minimise the risk of cross- infection, infestation and offence to your clients and colleagues P1.9 using equipment that is safe and fit for purpose P1.10 promptly identifying and reporting any products that need reordering to the relevant person P1.11 completing the service within a commercially viable time P1.12 completing client records so that they are accurate, easy to read and up-to-date P2 analyse the hair and prepare for perming by P2.1 asking your client appropriate questions to identify if they have any contra-indications to perming services P2.2 accurately recording your client's responses to questioning P2.3 conducting all necessary tests following manufacturers instructions and recognised industry procedures P2.4 accurately recording the outcomes of tests on the client s record card P2.5 ensuring your analysis allows you to accurately determine the choice of products and application methods P2.6 seeking assistance from the relevant person when contraindications and or reactions to tests cause doubts as to the suitability of the service for your client 2
3 P3 P4 P2.7 basing your recommendations on an accurate evaluation of your client s hair and its potential to achieve the effect required P2.8 informing your client of the likely cost, duration and expected outcome of the service P2.9 choosing products, tools and equipment based on the results of your analysis, necessary tests, consultation with your client and relevant factors influencing the service P2.10 preparing products following manufacturers instructions P2.11 ensuring shampooing leaves the hair free from product build-up P2.12 effectively protecting the hairline prior to perming P2.13 effectively protecting the scalp, where necessary, prior to perming P2.14 correctly applying a suitable pre-perm treatment from root to end to even out hair porosity chemically rearrange hair by P3.1 sectioning the hair cleanly and evenly to assist the accurate application of the chemical rearranger P3.2 applying products accurately taking into account the results of your analysis and other factors influencing the service P3.3 applying your chemical rearranger in a way that minimises the risk of the product being spread to your clients skin, clothes and surrounding area P3.4 accurately timing the application and development of the chemical rearranger following manufacturer s instructions P3.5 confirming the consistency and evenness of straightening has been achieved by taking strand tests on different areas of the head and at suitable times in the rearranging process P3.6 removing chemicals in a way which minimises the risk of damage to the hair and following manufacturers instructions P3.7 ensuring your working methods minimise the risk of chemicals being spread to the client s skin, clothes and surrounding areas P3.8 adapting the water temperature, pressure and direction to protect the hair condition P3.9 leaving the hair and scalp clean and free from chemicals and excess moisture P3.10 resolving any problems occurring during the chemical rearranging process within the limits of your own authority P3.11 promptly referring problems you cannot resolve to the relevant person P3.12 leaving the hair tangle-free without causing damage to the hair or scalp perm and neutralise hair by P4.1 using products and sectioning and winding techniques taking into account relevant factors influencing the service P4.2 sectioning and winding the hair cleanly and evenly to achieve 3
4 P5 the desired look P4.3 effectively securing any hair not being wound so as to keep your section clearly visible when required P4.4 applying pre or post damping products evenly to the hair following manufacturers instructions P4.5 taking meshes of hair which suit the size of the perming implement P4.6 maintaining an even tension throughout the winding process P4.7 completing all winding operations within 35 minutes when using pre-damping products P4.8 monitoring and timing the development of the perming process following manufacturers instructions P4.9 confirming the required degree of curl has been achieved by taking development test curls at suitable times throughout the perming process P4.10 achieving the correct degree of curl necessary for the final desired look P4.11 removing products ensuring the water pressure does not dislodge the perm implements and the water temperature suits your client's comfort needs P4.12 leaving the hair free of perm lotion when the desired degree of curl is achieved P4.13 removing excess moisture before applying neutraliser without disturbing the wound hair P4.14 distributing the neutraliser evenly following the manufacturer s instructions P4.15 removing the perm implements without disturbing the curl formation P4.16 leaving the hair free of neutraliser after the final rinse P4.17 identifying any problems during the perming and neutralising processes and resolving them within the limits of your own authority P4.18 promptly referring problems you cannot resolve to the relevant person P4.19 applying suitable activators and moisturisers at the end of the perming process provide aftercare advice by P5.1 giving advice and recommendations accurately and constructively P5.2 giving your client suitable advice on the maintenance of their perm 4
