2 RODAN KANE HART structure This January, Nirox Foundation and NIROXprojects will host an exhibition of sculptures as well as the unveiling of a new permanent experiential structure in the Nirox Sculpture Park both by Rodan Kane Hart. Hart has explored the subject of spatial perception within the complex and changing structures of the South African city for a number of years. Having lived in both Johannesburg and Cape Town, he began to investigate the physical & historical context of these two spaces. He has adopted a series of architectural and urban design approaches in order to read and understand these urban localities. Previous projects have often attempted to identify, expose and subsequently unpack noteworthy ideological constructs underpinning numerous urban forms within these particular contemporary South African cities. Hart s most recent series of steel sculptures/structures and drawings investigate what is revealed when manufacturing tectonic forms and how an understanding of this affects its very constructed nature. The Sculpture Exhibition and the Nirox Pavilion seeks to elicit the audience s awareness of themselves within the space around them. I am interested in attempting to reconcile formal abstraction with seemingly incongruous subjects from personal experiences. The works attempt to set up physical and visual parameters to mediate, spaces and patterns to contemplate, processes and experiences to cogitate and reflections and refractions to ruminate On 14 December 2012 artist Rodan Kane Hart moved in to the NIROXprojects space with his equipment and material for his stay as resident artist at Arts on Main, Maboneng Precinct, Johannesburg. During this residency, which is a continuation of a residency earlier this year at the Nirox Foundation in the cradle of humankind, Hart will be working on his upcoming solo Structure which will be held at the Nirox project space from January Up until then Hart be using the project space as a transparent studio during which time we welcome studio visits by any interested parties, by appointment either through the project manager, or by contacting Hart.

Hart completed two years of Fine Art at Wits University in Johannesburg during the years of 2008/2009, transferring to complete his undergraduate studies at the Michaelis School of Fine Art (Uct) in Cape Town during 2010/2011. Hart has taken part in numerous group and independent exhibitions throughout his university and professional career since 2004, including; Reflection: Strips (2012) a gallery intervention at Blank Projects, Positive Tension (2012) and Outside The Lines: An Exploration of Abstract Materiality (2012), at WHATIFTHEWORLD Gallery, Form Follows Attitude (2012) at Blank Projects, Halakasha (2010) curated by Fiona Rankin Smith at the Standard Bank Art Gallery in Johannesburg, & Time s Arrow (2010) curated by Anthea Buys at the Johannesburg Art Gallery. Hart has further been instrumental in initiating independent art exhibitions and events, both in Cape Town & Johannesburg.
