3 UN20AH6 Shampoo and treat hair and scalp for African-type hair Through this unit you will learn the skill of shampooing, conditioning and treating natural or chemically treated African type hair and scalp, using a variety of products and massage techniques. Being able to identify the condition of your client s hair, skin and scalp will determine which products and massage techniques to use. You will develop a sound knowledge of shampooing and conditioning products which will enable you to provide your client with good aftercare advice. This unit is suitable for both hairdressers and barbers. UN20AH6_v5

5 Shampoo and treat hair and scalp for African-type hair Learning outcomes On completion of this unit you will: 1. Be able to use safe and effective methods of working when shampooing, conditioning and treating hair 2. Be able to shampoo hair and scalp 3. Be able to condition and treat the hair and scalp 4. Understand salon and legal requirements 5. Understand how to work safely, effectively and hygienically when shampooing, conditioning and treating hair 6. Understand factors that affect shampooing and treating the hair 7. Understand products, equipment and their uses 8. Understand shampooing and treatment techniques 9. Understand how to communicate information to clients on hair maintenance and management Evidence requirements 1. Simulation is not allowed for any performance evidence within this unit. 2. You must practically demonstrate in your everyday work that you have met the standard for shampooing and treating the hair and scalp for African hair types. 3. Your assessor will observe these aspects of your performance on at least 3 separate occasions. 4. From the range, you must show that you have: used all of the conditioning and treatment products listed used all the shampooing massage techniques dealt with all the hair conditions listed adapted your shampooing techniques for 2 out of the 4* scalp conditions listed used all the conditioning massage techniques listed given all the types of advice listed. * However, you must prove to your assessor that you have the necessary knowledge, understanding and skills to be able to perform competently in respect of all the items in this range. 5. It is likely most evidence of your performance will be gathered from the observations made by your assessor but you may be required to produce other evidence to support your performance if your assessor has not been present. 6. Knowledge and understanding in this unit will be assessed by an external paper. The criteria that make up this paper are highlighted in white throughout this unit. 6 Achieving observations and range Achieving observation outcomes Your assessor will observe your performance of practical tasks. The minimum number of observations required is indicated in the evidence requirements section of this unit. Criteria may not always naturally occur during a practical observation. In such instances you will be asked questions to demonstrate your competence in this area. Your assessor will document the criteria that have been achieved through oral questioning. Your assessor will sign off an outcome when all criteria have been competently achieved in a single client service. Maximum service times The following maximum service times apply to this unit: Apply shampoo and treatments to chemically treated hair (i.e. permed, relaxed or coloured) Apply shampoo and treatments to natural hair Apply shampoo and treatments to locked hair (up to shoulder length) 15 minutes 20 minutes 30 minutes Achieving range The range section indicates what must be covered. Ranges must be practically demonstrated as part of an observation. Your assessor will document the portfolio reference once a range has been competently achieved. 4 UN20AH6

7 Observations Outcome 1 Be able to use safe and effective methods of working when shampooing, conditioning and treating hair You can: a. Protect the client s clothing throughout the service b. Position the client to meet the needs of the service without causing them discomfort c. Keep the work area clean and tidy throughout the service d. Remove waste immediately at the end of the shampooing and treatment service e. Use safe work methods that: make effective use of resources minimise harm or injury to yourself and others f. Maintain personal standards of health and hygiene which minimise the risk of crossinfection, infestation and offence to clients and colleagues g. Use shampooing, conditioning and treatment products and equipment identified as a result of consultation with the client h. Comb through client s hair, when required, without causing damage to the hair and scalp i. Replenish low levels of resources, when required, to minimise disruption to your own work and to clients* j. Identify and report any products that need re-ordering to the relevant person(s)* k. Complete the shampooing and treatment service within a commercially viable time l. Complete client records, when required, so that they are accurate, easy to read and up to date *May be assessed through oral questioning. Apply conditioning and treatment products to meet the needs of the client s hair and scalp, and follow the salon s and manufacturers instructions b. Use conditioning massage techniques to meet the needs of the client s hair and scalp c. Monitor and time the development of the conditioning treatment and apply heat at the right temperature d. Remove the conditioner and/or treatment in a way that avoids disturbing the direction of the cuticle e. Leave the client s hair free of excess moisture f.
