1 Cosmetology Beauty is in your hands! Are you interested in skin and nail care and do you want to own your own nail salon? Have you always wanted to be a hair stylist, cosmetologist or esthetician? All of these career opportunities are possible in the Cosmetology program at the Public Service Leadership Academy at Fowler. Introduction to Cosmetology provides students with an overview of the necessary skills and prerequisite course work needed to earn a degree with possible licensure in Cosmetology. Students will learn about the vast career opportunities in cosmetology, salon safety, life skills, manicures, pedicures, nail art, hairstyling, braiding and much more. The Cosmetology program will provide you with the hands-on experience you need to be successful in the work place right out of high school. By working in the onsite salon, you will not only be training for your career but also preparing for the New York State practical exam. 2 Course of Study Cosmetology 9th Grade 10th Grade 11th Grade 12th Grade PSLA Exploratory (1 Credit CTE) Cosmetology 100 COS100 (1 Credit CTE) Cosmetology 200 COS200 (2 Credits CTE) Cosmetology 300 COS300 (2 Credits CTE) Cosmetology CTE Integrated ELA CTE400 (1 Credit) DISTRICT REQUIREMENTS Students must pass CTE Cosmetology 100, 200 and 300 to challenge the course approved technical assessment. All students in 9th grade will receive and Financial Management and CTE Exploratory classes. Student will have earned the 11th grade integrated science credit upon successful completion of the CTE Cosmetology 200. Student will have earned the 12th grade integrated ELA credit upon successful completion of the CTE Cosmetology 100, 200 and 300. Student will receive the CTE Endorsement upon successful completion of the CTE Cosmetology program and must pass the prescribed technical assessment and complete a commencement level project. 40

General Anatomy and Physiology 4 Hair Coloring Electricity State Board Techniques COSMETOLOGY Course Syllabus Cosmetology 200 COURSE DESCRIPTION This is the second year of a three year program. Cosmetology 200 is two-credit course taught during two class periods a day that will expand on all of the skills taught in Cosmetology 100 as well as explore many other facets of Cosmetology. The Cosmetology 200 program will include theory aspects in the science units as well as many advanced hands-on activities such as haircutting and styling, advanced nail techniques and state board techniques. In addition to the hands-on activities, students will engage in textbook generated, lectures, group discussions and science lab work. Students will also work toward accumulating cosmetology hours that are used toward NYS licensing. COURSE OBJECTIVES 1. Students will project a positive attitude and a sense of personal integrity and self-confidence. 2. Students will perform the basic manipulative skills in the areas of hair care, skin care and nail care. 3. Students will use effective analytical skills to determine appropriate hair care, skin care and nail care services to achieve the best look for clients. INTEGRATED ACADEMICS N/A TEXTBOOK Milady. Milady Standard Cosmetology. Clifton Park, NY: Cengage, EQUIPMENT AND SUPPLIES School will provide: Textbook, portfolio binders, Cosmetology Lab equipment and Cosmetology Kit for purchase or rental. (If a student does not wish to purchase a kit, they will be able to rent a kit, including a lock, for the year for $ The rental fee will be refunded when the kit is returned at the end of the year complete with all supplies. If the kit is not returned or is incomplete, the rental fee will be forfeited.) Student will provide: closed-toed shoes for safety; a supply of pens/pencils; a 2 binder for handouts, and procedure sheets; a Cosmetology Kit (approximate cost $ to be used for two years for Cosmetology 200 and 300); and a key or combination lock to keep the Cosmetology Kit secure GRADING 25% Participation Grade (awarded daily) 20% Written Grade (vocabulary, ; portfolio and research papers graded separately) 30% Test Grade 50% Practical Grade (all hands on activities and lab work) All homework and assignments due on the assigned date; late work will be accepted up to three days late, losing 10 points per day. ADDITIONAL COURSE POLICIES Good attendance is extremely important to succeed and qualify for licensing. Students are expected to be in attendance daily in order to achieve the hours needed to obtain their cosmetology license. If students are absent, upon their return to class, they must have a note from parent or doctor. 41
