1 National Unit Specification: general information CODE F4C4 11 SUMMARY This Unit focuses on practical activities for hair colouring and lightening. Candidates will investigate safe working practices when colouring and lightening hair and the range of products available. Candidates will mix and apply colouring and lightening products, use various techniques and remove colouring and lightening products correctly from the hair. This Unit is suitable for candidates with limited knowledge in hairdressing. OUTCOMES 1 Investigate safe working practices when colouring and lightening hair. 2 Prepare for a colouring and lightening process. 3 Perform application techniques for colouring and lightening products. 4 Remove colouring and lightening products from hair. 2 National Unit Specification: general information (cont) CREDIT VALUE 2 credits at SCQF level 5 (12 SCQF credit points at SCQF level 5*). *SCQF credit points are used to allocate credit to qualifications in the Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework (SCQF). Each qualification in the Framework is allocated a number of SCQF credit points at an SCQF level. There are 12 SCQF levels, ranging from Access 1 to Doctorates. CORE SKILLS There is no automatic certification of Core Skills components in this Unit. 3 National Unit Specification: statement of standards Acceptable performance in this Unit will be the satisfactory achievement of the standards set out in this part of the Unit Specification. All sections of the statement of standards are mandatory and cannot be altered without reference to SQA. OUTCOME 1 Investigate safe working practices when colouring and lightening hair. Performance Criteria (a) Identify and describe relevant tests and testing when colouring and lightening hair. (b) Identify contra indications prior to colouring and lightening hair. (c) Explain the need for client protection and safety. OUTCOME 2 Prepare for a colouring and lightening treatment. Performance Criteria (a) Identify a range of colouring and lightening products for the client. (b) Protect self and client in accordance with correct salon procedures. (c) Prepare tools and equipment appropriate to the colouring technique and in accordance with salon procedures. (d) Mix colouring products to meet required application whilst following manufacturers instructions. OUTCOME 3 Perform application techniques for colouring and lightening products. Performance Criteria (a) Apply colouring and lightening products using relevant techniques. (b) Apply colouring and lightening products evenly using appropriate amounts. (c) Monitor colouring development time in accordance with manufacturers instructions. (d) Monitor client comfort and safety throughout the application and development of products. 4 National Unit Specification: statement of standards (cont) OUTCOME 4 Remove colouring and lightening products from hair. Performance Criteria (a) Use the correct Personal Protective Equipment for removal of colouring products. (b) Remove colouring and lightening products from the hair using correct procedures following manufacturers instructions. (c) Condition hair on completion of colour and lightening removal in accordance with manufacturer s instructions. (d) Ensure client care and comfort throughout the removal of colouring and lightening products. (e) Comply with current health and safety regulations/legislation. EVIDENCE REQUIREMENTS FOR THIS UNIT Evidence is required to demonstrate that candidates have achieved all Outcomes and Performance Criteria. Outcome 1 Written and/or oral evidence Evidence for Outcome 1 should be compiled in a candidate folio. Candidates must investigate the safe working practices in colouring and lightening hair. Candidates must identify and describe: Relevant test: elasticity; porosity; skin test; incompatibility; test cutting; strand test Contra-indications: cuts and abrasions; active psoriasis; signs of infection eg ringworm and/or infestation eg pediculosis capitis In addition the candidate must explain the need for client protection and safety. This Outcome should be assessed prior to the remaining Outcomes. Evidence should be generated early on in the Unit. Outcomes 2, 3 and 4 Performance evidence Candidates must prepare for, apply and remove colouring and lightening products on three clients. Three different products must be used. These are: quasi, permanent/lightening and one different colour product. Three different techniques must be used. These are: full head, re-growth and current techniques on free placement of colour. Candidates must: identify a suitable range of colouring and lightening products for the client, from the following: temporary; semi permanent; quasi; permanent colour; lightening protect self and client in accordance with correct salon procedures protective gloves; apron; plastic/rubber cape; barrier cream prepare tools and equipment appropriate to the colouring technique and in accordance with salon procedures mixing bowl; tint applicators; brush; comb; measuring jar mix colouring products to meet required application whilst following manufacturers instructions Unit Specification Mix, Apply and Remove Hair Colour (SCQF level 5) 4

An Assessment Support Pack has been produced for this Unit. This pack includes an observation checklist and a sample folio. Centres wishing to produce their own instruments of assessment should refer to the Assessment Support Pack to ensure that they are of a comparable standard. 6 National Unit Specification: support notes This part of the Unit Specification is offered as guidance. The support notes are not mandatory. While the exact time allocated to this Unit is at the discretion of the centre, the notional design length is 80 hours. GUIDANCE ON THE CONTENT AND CONTEXT FOR THIS UNIT This is an optional Unit in the National Certificate Group Award in Hairdressing at SCQF level 5 but can also be taken as a free-standing Unit. This Unit concentrates on developing the skills necessary for the application of different colouring and lightening products and techniques. The candidate will gain knowledge on the importance of tests and testing, contra-indications, health and safety regulations, and following manufacturer s instructions. The folio should include: relevant tests: elasticity; porosity; skin test; incompatibility; test cutting; strand test contraindications are; cuts and abrasions; active psoriasis; signs of infection and/or infestation safe working practices in colouring and lightening hair The practical activity in this Unit must be delivered in a realistic work environment. The topics for delivery of this Unit are: protection of self and client in accordance with correct salon procedures protective gloves; apron; plastic/rubber cape; barrier cream tools and equipment appropriate to the colouring technique and in accordance with salon procedures mixing bowl; tint applicators; brush; comb; measuring jar Mix colouring products to meet required application whilst following manufacturers instructions. relevant application techniques are full head colouring: virgin hair; re-growth; weaving; cap; current free placement of colour use of colouring and lightening products in a range temporary, semi, quasi, permanent colour and lightening safe removal of colouring/lightening products in accordance with salon procedures It would be beneficial for the candidate to have achieved or currently studying the mandatory Units from the National Certificate Group Award in Hairdressing at SCQF level 5. 7 National Unit Specification: support notes (cont) GUIDANCE ON LEARNING AND TEACHING APPROACHES FOR THIS UNIT Using candidate centred learning approaches such as demonstrations and practical techniques; working on mannequin heads to gain skills on application techniques before proceeding to clients should facilitate learning. Underpinning knowledge should be focused on various group discussions incorporating; slides, reference books, Internet pages, candidate research, games, quizzes and media. The candidate should be made aware of the importance of safe working practices when using colouring/lightening products and techniques, within the realistic work environment. It is also important the candidates are aware of current ranges of products and techniques required for current trends in the hairdressing industry. OPPORTUNITIES FOR CORE SKILL DEVELOPMENT This Unit may provide the opportunities to develop Core Skills through the practical activity. Candidates will be involved in listening, seeking advice, planning resources, feedback and producing a written and/or oral evidence for the folio. There are good opportunities for developing Core Skills in Communication and Working with Others. GUIDANCE ON APPROACHES TO ASSESSMENT FOR THIS UNIT Opportunities for the use of e-assessment E-assessment may be appropriate for some assessments in this Unit. By e-assessment we mean assessment which is supported by information and communications technology (ICT), such as e-testing or the use of e-portfolios or e-checklists. Centres which wish to use e-assessment must ensure that the national standard is applied to all candidate evidence and that conditions of assessment as specified in the Evidence Requirements are met, regardless of the mode of gathering evidence. Further advice is available in SQA Guidelines on Online Assessment for Further Education (AA1641, March 2003), SQA Guidelines on e-assessment for Schools (BD2625, June 2005). It is recommended that Outcome 1 is assessed first and that the assessment for Outcomes 2, 3 and 4 are integrated as far as possible. Centres should ensure that candidates have access to suitable media and referencing to have the ability to research: safe working practices in colouring and lightening hair tests: elasticity; porosity; skin test; incompatibility; test cutting; strand test colouring products: temporary; semi; quasi; permanent; lightening contraindications: cuts and abrasions; active psoriasis; signs of infection and/or infestation The evidence for Outcome 1 will be in the form of a folio and should take place in open-book conditions. The performance evidence should be recorded on an assessor observation checklist. Candidates should be assessed, on a minimum of three occasions covering the condition specified in the Evidence Requirements. This assessment will take place toward the completion of this Unit.
