1 Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) TIME: 20 minutes PURPOSE OF THE ACTIVITY: The participant will be able to read and use a Material Safety Data Sheet. MATERIALS NEEDED: q q Copies of the MSDS Sheets for each participant Copies of the questionnaire for each participant CONDUCTING THE ACTIVITY: 1. Give each participant the MSDS's for Clorox, Tuffsuds, and Puritan Floor Cleaner. Give each participant a copy of the MSDS questionnaire. 2. Ask the participants to work in pairs or as a group. 3. 2 Material Safety Data Sheet for Clorox Bleach I. CHEMICAL IDENTIFICATION Name: Clorox Bleach Description: clear, light, yellow liquid with chlorine odor Other Designations: EPA Reg. No Sodium Hypochlorite Solution Emergency Procedure: Notify your supervisor. Call your local poison control center. II. HEALTH HAZARD DATA Causes severe but temporary eye injury. May irritate skin. May cause nausea and vomiting if ingested. Exposure to vapor or mist may irritate nose, throat and lungs. The following medical conditions may be aggravated by exposure to high concentrations of vapor or mist: heart conditions or chronic respiratory problems such as asthma, chronic bronchitis, or obstructive lung disease. Under normal consumer use conditions that likelihood of any adverse health effects are low. FIRST AID: EYE CONTACT: Immediately flush eyes with plenty of water. If irritation persists, see a doctor. SKIN CONTACT: Remove contaminated clothing. Wash area with water. INHALATION: If breathing problems develop remove to fresh air. III. HAZARDOUS INGREDIENTS Ingredients: Sodium hypochloite CAS# Concentration: 5.25% Worker Exposure Limit: Not Established None of the ingredients in this product are on the IARC, NTP, or OSHA carcinogen list. Occasional clinical reports suggest a low potential for sensitization upon exaggerated exposure to sodium hypochlorite if skin damage (eg. Irritation) occurs during exposure. Routine clinical tests conducted on intact skin found no sensitization in the test subjects. IV. SPECIAL PROTECTION INFORMATION Hygienic practices: Wear safety glasses. With repeated or prolonged use, wear gloves. Engineering Controls: Use general ventilation to minimize exposure to vapor or mist. Work Practices: Avoid eye and skin contact and inhalation of vapor or mist. V. SPECIAL PRECAUTIONS Keep out of reach of children. Do not get in eyes or on skin. Wash thoroughly with soap and water after handling. Do not mix household cleaners such as toilet bowl cleaners, rust removers, vinegar, acid, or ammonia containing products. Store in a cool dry place. Do not reuse empty container; rinse container and put in trash container. VI. SPILL OR LEAK PROCEDURES Small quantities of less than 5 gallons may be flushed down drain. For larger quantities, wipe up spill with an absorbent material or mop and dispose of in accordance with local, state and federal regulations. Dilute with water to minimize oxidizing effect on spilled surfaces. VII. REACTIVITY DATA Stable under normal use and storage conditions. Strong oxidizing agent. Reacts with

3 other household chemicals such as toilet bowl cleaners, rust removers, vinegar, acid, or ammonia containing products to produce hazardous gases, such as chlorine and other chlorinated species. Prolonged contact with metal may cause pitting or discoloration. VIII. FIRE AND EXPLOSION DATA Not flammable or explosive. In a fire, cool containers to prevent rupture and release of sodium chlorate. IX. PHYSICAL DATA Boiling Point: 212 o F/100 o C (decompresses) Specific Gravity (H 2 O = 1.00): Solubility in Water: complete ph: 11.4

SPILL OR LEAK PROCEDURES / WEAR PROPER PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT Clean-up: dike or dam large spills. Pump to container or soak up on inert absorbent. Flush residue or small spills to sanitary sewer. Waste disposal: Consult state/local authorities for limits on chemical waste disposal. Small amounts may be safely put down the sewer. VII. HEALTH HAZARD DATA Effects of overexposure to concentrate: Eyes: causes minor irritation Skin: Prolonged exposure may cause drying or minor irritation If swallowed: May cause stomach upset VIII. FIRST AID Eyes: Flush with cool running water. Remove contact lenses and flush again for minutes. Skin: Flush skin with water; wash with soap and water. If swallowed: Rinse mouth; then drink 1 or 2 large glasses of water. DO NOT induce vomiting. NEVER give anything by mouth to an unconscious person. If irritation or discomfort persists, consult a physician.

No. Do not mix Clorox Bleach with other household cleaners, such as toilet bowl cleaners, rust removers, vinegar, acid, or ammonia containing products.
