10 6. Frequently Asked Questions Who are my judges? There are no judges, only one examiner. The examiner is an experienced Journeyperson Hairstylist and is either an employer or employee from Manitoba. Am I allowed to ask questions at the examination? Questions can be directed to the examiner during the examination. Information will be shared with all examinees so that all examinees can benefit. Do I really have to do a practical exam? Yes, a practical and written exam is required to achieve certification as a Red Seal (Interprovincial) Journeyperson Hairstylist in Manitoba. What if I want to use more (or less) than three (3) models? There are no provisions for more than three models however two (2) is the minimum number of models required. You must have one (1) male model and one (1) female model. Can I use a minor as a model? All models must be 18 years of age or older, and models must sign a Waiver of Liability Form. What time should my models arrive for the exam? Exam registration for you and your male model is at 8:00 am. The examination will begin once everyone is registered at 8:30 am. Your second model should arrive at 9:15 am. Your afternoon model should meet you during the lunch break, the exam resumes at 12:50 pm. (Times may vary depending on program preference) Can the marker s decision be based on my personal style versus theirs? No. An examiner is subject to strict rules of conduct. Rules of professional conduct are required for both the examiner and examinee. What if I don t finish a section? Examiners are required to mark candidates on the stated criteria for each task within a component. Any incomplete work for a task will result in a mark of zero being assigned for that specific task. Incomplete work may result in a failing mark. If I don t complete a section, does that mean I automatically fail the entire exam? Not necessarily. Each section of the exam is mandatory and is averaged and calculated for a total of 100%. Failure of a section will require a retesting of that section only. When is the Interprovincial exam scheduled? For Hairstylist, Esthetician (Skin Care/Nail Technician) and Electrologist graduates of accredited programs, the practical examination will be scheduled in an accredited program facility by the accredited training providers and administered by an examiner appointed by Apprenticeship Manitoba. Apprenticeship Manitoba is not responsible for accredited program examination schedules or advising accredited program candidates of examination marks. 10
