Ko et al 4 concluded that electrical clipping is superior to manual shaving in the prevention of suppurative mediastinitis. AORN, APIC, the CDC and other health care organizations recommend clipping rather than shaving as a pre-op hair removal method. 5,6,7 The list goes on and on. Clip the high cost of infections Clipping not only cuts the risk of infection, but also helps cut costs partly because infections can lead to longer hospital stays. One study found that the length of stay would be reduced by 656 days per 1,000 patients, resulting in a savings of $275,000 USD, if all patients were clipped the morning of surgery rather than shaved. 1 Another study found that the cost of clipping was less than half that of using a razor for pre-op prepping, and 11 times less than using a depilatory. 8 Clipping also offers other benefits over shaving and depilatories, too. Fewer delays at the beginning of surgical procedures. No depilatory rash. And more efficient use of OR staff. 9 Plus, it s just more comfortable for the patient.
