3 How do I know if a product is truly natural? Be label savvy! Be leery of labels that claim made with natural, contains natural, all-natural Steer clear of products that contain parabens, chemical sunscreens, petro chemicals, propylene glycol, DEA/TEA, phthalates and more Begin looking for the Natural Products Association (NPA) seal To gain certification, products must be formulated with at least 95% natural ingredients from renewable resources. 6/23/ /21/10

5 Parabens (Methyl-, Propyl-, Ethyl-, Butyl-) Purpose: Common chemical preservative used in the cosmetic industry to lengthen the shelf life of a product. Problem: Studies suggest that this preservative may be a possible endocrine disrupter, potentially causing birth defects and certain types of cancer. Parabens may also cause allergic reactions and dermatitis in some individuals. Our Alternative: We preserve our natural products with phenoxyethanol. This preservative is found in nature and can be extracted from essential sage oil. 6/23/ /21/10

6 Sodium Lauryl Sulfate Purpose: This detergent, degreaser and emulsifier is used in numerous personal care products and is considered one of the more dangerous. Used in strong concentration, SLS will degrease motors and clean garage floors. Problem: SLS can react with DEA and TEA to form the carcinogen, nitrosamine. This harsh skin irritant strips skins natural moisture and can penetrate eyes and tissue, making it especially harmful to infants and children. Our Alternative: We use natural glucosides derived from coconut and corn starch to act as mild surfactants, gentle enough for sensitive skin & hair. 6/23/ /21/10

7 Chemical Sunscreens (Oxybenzone/Avobenzone) Purpose: Synthetic sunscreens absorb ultraviolet rays, making it effective in protecting against sunburn. Problem: Because these sunscreens actually absorb UVA/UVB rays rather than physically blocking it out, they potentially disrupt hormone balance. Chemical sunscreens can also take up to 30 minutes to become effective. Our Alternative: When a sunscreen or sun protection is needed we use titanium dioxide and zinc oxide. These naturally occurring minerals work to block ultraviolet rays and work immediately. 6/23/ /21/10

8 Petro Chemicals (Petrolatum, Mineral oil, Paraffin) Purpose: Acts as an emollient to smooth skin. Problem: These are non-renewable crude oil byproducts with potentially dangerous impurities. They may also contain low levels of Polycyclic Aromatic Hyrdocarbons which are suspected carcinogens. Our Alternative: We choose to replace these petro chemicals with numerous other oils and waxes. Derived from the honeycomb of bees, beeswax acts as an emulsifier and helps to prevent skin irritations and chapping. Apricot kernel oil and coconut oil also work as emulsifiers and will soften and condition skin. 6/23/ /21/10

9 Propylene Glycol Purpose: Used in personal care products as a humectant that absorbs water from the air. Problem: This petroleum derived synthetic chemical increases skin absorption and acts as a penetration enhancer which alters skin structure and allows other chemicals to penetrate deeper into the skin. This ingredient is also a known skin and eye irritant that can cause allergic reactions and acne. Our Alternative: We choose to use glycerin which is a natural humectant. This natural alternative keeps moisture in the skin and the chemicals out! 6/23/ /21/10

10 Phthalates Purpose: A carrier used to blend liquids and oils, commonly found in fragrances. Problem: Known to be a skin and eye irritant and has been linked in studies as an endocrine disruptor and organ toxicity. Our Alternative: We can assure that the fragrances used in any of our personal care items are free of phthalates. 6/23/ /21/10

11 DEA/TEA (Diethanolamine/Triethanolamine) Purpose: Neutralizes compounds and adjusts ph levels. Problem: These compounds can react with nitrites during manufacturing or while sitting on the shelf. This reaction leads to the formation of nitrosamines, which are potential carcinogens. These ingredients are also sensitizers and can trigger immune system response that can cause irritation of skin. Our Alternative: When a ph adjuster is necessary, we use sodium hydroxide in very small amounts to maintain a balanced ph level. 6/23/ /21/10

12 Formaldehyde Purpose: A preservative found in numerous personal care products. Problem: Strong skin irritant that is known to cause eye, nose & throat irritation. The EPA* has also classified this ingredient as a probable human carcinogen (proven to be a carcinogen in animals). Our Alternative: Our natural products contain preservatives that don t release formaldehydes or any other harmful irritants. 13 1,4 Dioxane Purpose: This ingredient does not have a specific purpose, rather it s a by-product of certain manufacturing procedures. Problem: 1,4 dioxane can cause headaches, dizziness and nausea, and is a human immune system toxicant and carcinogen. Our Alternative: We steer clear of any process that may produce 1,4 dioxane as a chemical by-product. 6/23/ /21/10

14 Acrylates Copolymer Purpose: A thickening agent that also reduces the tackiness and any feeling of greasiness. Problem: Known to be a strong irritant. Our Alternative: When a thickening agent is needed we use natural gums; for example guar gum and xanthan gum. 6/23/ /21/10

15 Carbomer Purpose: Carbomers are used to control the consistency and flow of cosmetics and personal care products. Problem: They are petroleum derived and can contain hazardous by-products, and are known to cause allergic reactions and irritation to the skin. 16 PVP (Synthetic Polymers) Purpose: PVP is a petroleum derived ingredient used as a binder, film former and emulsion stabilizer in the personal care industry. Problem: Synthetic polymers can contain hazardous by-products. Our Alternative: When a thickening agent is needed we use natural gums; for example guar gum and xanthan gum. 6/23/ /21/10

17 Chemical Preservatives Purpose: Used in personal care products to kill any imposing bacteria. Problem: These chemical preservatives can contain formaldehyde and some are known irritants. Our Alternative: We choose to use natural and less irritating preservatives, for example vitamin E and some select essential oils. 6/23/ /21/10

18 Silicones Purpose: Protect against water evaporation from the skin and provide skin with improved softness. Problem: The manufacturing of silicones can produce hazardous byproducts. Silicones are not biodegradable and concerns exist over bioaccumulation. Our Alternative: There are numerous oils with the same quality. We use apricot kernel oil, avocado oil, coconut oil and jojoba oil (among others) to protect skin and provide softness. 6/23/ /21/10

19 Synthetic Dyes Purpose: To attribute a desired color to a product. Commonly used in cosmetics and personal care products. Problem: The chemicals used to produce synthetic dyes are often highly toxic, carcinogenic, and sometimes explosive. Our Alternative: When we want to achieve a specific color (for example in a lip tint), we do so with naturally occurring dies such as carmine and mica. 6/23/ /21/10

20 Quats Purpose: Quats act as preservatives, and also add a bond within conditioners. Problem: Manufacturing of certain quats can produce hazardous by-products and are also known to be skin irritants. Our Alternative: Our natural products use specific quats that are proven to be safe and are not hard on the skin. We verify the manufacturing of any quat used in our products and can assure that none of them contain hazardous by-products. 6/23/ /21/10

21 Talc Purpose: Talc adds softness to cosmetic products and acts as an absorbent. Problem: Talc is closely related to asbestos. Talc poses a health risk when exposed to the lungs and genital areas.
