2 Dr. Sass Says While most Americans recognize that overexposure to the sun is unhealthy, the fact remains that most do not protect their skin from the sun s harmful rays. As a result, in the United States, more than one million non-melanoma skin cancers are diagnosed every year, and approximately one person dies from melanoma every hour. Today, melanoma is the second most common cancer in women ages 20 to 29. What is SPF? SPF means sun protection factor. Sunscreens are rated by the strength of their SPF. The SPF refers to the product s ability to deflect the sun s burning rays (UVB). The SPF rating is calculated by comparing the amount of time needed to produce a sunburn on unprotected skin to the amount of time needed to cause a sunburn on sunscreen-protected skin. For example, if a person would normally turn red after 10 minutes of exposure to the sun, using a sunscreen with an SPF of 15 would allow that person to multiply that initial burning time by 15, which means it would take 15 times longer to burn, or 150 minutes. Even with this protection, sunscreen breaks down and rubs off with normal wear, so it needs to be reapplied approximately every two hours. Does SPF 30 have twice as much sun protection as SPF 15? UVB protection does not increase proportionately with a designated SPF number. For example, an SPF of 30 screens 97% of UVB rays, whereas an SPF of 15 screens 93% of UVB rays, and an SPF of 2 screens 50% of UVB rays. Whichever SPF you choose, wearing sunscreen should not provide a false sense of security about protection from exposure to ultraviolet radiation. No sunscreen can provide 100 percent protection. Using a higher SPF provides greater protection, but it does not mean that you should stay out in the sun longer. Is there a safe way to tan? No, there is no safe way to tan. A tan damages the skin. When ultraviolet radiation penetrates the skin s outer layer, melanin is produced as a response to the injury; melanin is what creates the tan. Chronic exposure to ultraviolet radiation, both natural and artificial, results in a change in the skin s texture, causing wrinkling and age spots. Thus, tanning to improve your appearance is ultimately self-defeating. Every time you tan, you damage your skin and this damage accumulates over time. This accumulated damage, in addition to accelerating the aging process, also increases your risk for all types of skin cancer. In fact, the World Health Organization classifies ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun and artificial sources, such as tanning beds and sun lamps, as a known cancer-causing substance (similar to tobacco). If you like the bronze coloring that the sun gives you, there are creams and sprays that can be applied to safely give you a healthy glow. Are tanning beds a safer way to tan? In spite of claims that tanning beds offer safe tanning, indoor tanning equipment, including all artificial light sources such as beds, lamps, bulbs, booths, etc., emit UVA and UVB radiation. The amount of the radiation produced during indoor tanning is similar to the sun and in some cases, may be stronger. Scientific studies have shown that exposure to UV radiation during indoor tanning damages the DNA in the skin cells. Also, excessive exposure to UV radiation during indoor tanning can lead to skin cancer, skin aging, immune system suppression and eye damage, including cataracts and ocular melanoma. Will avoiding the sun or using sunscreen limit the amount of vitamin D I receive? As clinical evidence linking vitamin D with bone health, cancer risk and certain chronic conditions continues to emerge, coverage in the non-scientific media has frequently focused on sun exposure, and even indoor tanning, as a source of vitamin D. While dermatologists agree that the sun is certainly a source of vitamin D, they are also aware it is a source of harmful UV radiation resulting in thousands of skin cancers and deaths each year. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends that an adequate amount of vitamin D be obtained from a healthy diet that includes foods naturally high in vitamin D, foods/beverages fortified with vitamin D and /or vitamin D supplements. In 1930, one in 5,000 Americans was likely to develop melanoma during their lifetime. By 2010, this ratio jumped to one in 59. If current trends continue, by 2050, one in five Americans will develop skin cancer during their lifetime. That s the bad news. The good news is that most of these cancers are completely preventable by protecting yourself adequately from the sun.

5 Men are finally realizing that Windy Ridge Skin Care Centre isn't just a place for their wife or girlfriend. It's a place of health and wellness for them too, and not only are more men coming in for massage, but there is an increase in men getting facials and other body therapies. According to the International Spa Association, men now make up approximately one third of all spa-goers. If he's new to the idea and a bit apprehensive to take the leap, here are a few good ways to convince him that a trip to Windy Ridge Skin Care Centre is a great idea. Beard Care Chances are, your dad or husband probably thinks that facials are just for women. More men are realizing that exfoliating dead skin helps to expose their beard's hair follicles, which reduces ingrown hairs and is a great primer for a good, close shave. Of course, a good exfoliating facial will also make his skin look cleaner and smoother, and yes, younger! Stress Relief Statistically, stress is a major contributor to many diseases and medical conditions including heart disease, high blood pressure, asthma, headaches, and depression. Remind dad that going to the spa - even just to soak in the Jacuzzi or sit in the sauna or steam room for 20 minutes - is a great way to relieve stress, relax, and decompress from a long hard workweek. Gift Him! As they say, If you build it, they will come. Well, in the case of a spa-fearing guy If you gift him, he better come! It's a safe bet that if you give dear ol' dad a gift card to the spa and explain to him how relaxing it will be, he probably won't want to offend you by not going. Better yet, create a special Father's Day package to show him how much you really care about his wellness, or go for the gold and gift him a membership to help him de-stress all year long. So, for this Father's Day, educate your father or husband on the health, wellness, and relaxation benefits of all things offered at Windy Ridge Skin Care Centre! Call today to purchase his Father's Day gift!

7 Help Dad Stay Safe in the Sun! Father s Day is fast-approaching, but there s still time to get Dad a great gift. The Skin Cancer Foundation suggests giving Dad the gift of sun protection. It s important that men stay sun-safe men over age 40 have the highest annual exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation, which is associated with about 90 percent of nonmelanoma skin cancers and 65 percent of melanomas. Here are some great gift ideas to ensure that Dad will be safe in the sun this summer, and all year long. Professionally-installed automobile and home window films that block 99 percent of harmful ultraviolet B (UVB) and ultraviolet A (UVA) rays. Window films from 3M Company, Bekaert Specialty Films (Solar Gard and Panorama), and Solutia Performance Films (FormulaOne, VistaTM, and LLumar) all carry The Skin Cancer Foundation s Seal of Recommendation. These films can be virtually invisible, so you can limit your exposure to UV radiation without disrupting your view. Special UV radiation-absorbing clothes. These clothes may have a UPF (Ultraviolet Protection Factor) label, indicating how much UV radiation is absorbed by the fabric. A shirt with a UPF of 50, for example, will allow just 1/50th of the sun s UV radiation to penetrate the cloth. The Skin Cancer Foundation recommends clothing with a UPF of 30 or higher. Wraparound sunglasses that block percent of the sun s UV rays effectively shield both eyes and the surrounding skin, helping prevent serious conditions such as cataracts and melanomas of the eye and eyelid. Also consider buying Dad UV-blocking sunglasses with polarized lenses lenses with a special filter that blocks horizontal glare. Coppertone Polarized Prescription Lenses are thin, available in brown and gray, and accommodate virtually all frames and prescriptions. What Dad wouldn t love a pair of great shades? A hat with a brim extending at least three inches all the way around helps to shade not just the face and scalp but the neck, shoulders, and upper back. Sorry, sports fans: while baseball caps (and sun visors) may be okay in a pinch, they do not provide enough protection, because they only protect the face and scalp. Examples of wide-brimmed hats that can provide great sun protection include the fedora, Panama, outback and bucket. If you want to be assured that a sun protection product is safe and effective, look for products that have earned The Skin Cancer Foundation s Seal of Recommendation. Also consider making Dad s annual appointment with a dermatologist for a professional skin exam. It may not be the most exciting gift, but you could be saving his life.
