2 COVER STORY THAILAND : A BETTER FUTURE FOR SME The value of Thailand s handcrafts and house furnishings exported the first quarter (?) has decrease to % Vietnam has imported more furniture and handcrafts from Thailand to the rate of % Compared with the same quarter from last year, the value of Thailand s handcrafts and house furnishings exported in the first quarter (?) has dropped to million USD. This caused the growth rate to decrease to percent. As the three main markets, i.e. USA, Japan and Switzerland, have made less orders from Thailand, this impacted dramatically on the export industry as these three countries made up of percent of the Thailand s total export value. Also, after the REACH regulation was imposed in Europe setting a new standard for imported goods, this resulted in a higher degree of complex requirements for Thai entrepreneurs who export their products to the European market. This new regulation will, by all means, set the standards of Thai products to be more safe to the human health and the environment. Aside from the new quality control regulation, another challenge in the world markets still awaits - the price competition with China and India. These two countries are well-known for their cheaper workforce and raw materials compared to those in Thailand. However, the land of smile still has a better chance to success in the AEC market. This new potential is the result of a persistent support from the Thai government. To name one great example, the OTOP stimulus programme has shown the improvement both in production and in distribution of local products from Thailand to other countries. What seems to be a new opportunity for SME exporters is the growing demand from the AEC countries. Vietnam, for instance, has imported more furniture and handcrafts from Thailand to the rate of per cent showing a good sign of success under a new commitment.
