Base with one coat Bleached Sand. This next step needs to be done wet-on-wet, so you need to work fairly quickly, but please don t stress! Thin down Bleached Sand with a lot of water and apply to surface. While still wet, begin to slip-slap colors on to create subtle changes of color, keeping area behind the moth and to the right of the lower end of the lavender light with Bleached Sand: add Antique White nearest the white center area, adding Camel toward the top and bottom. Spritz with White Media Mister in center of piece where you need some light. Also dab in, with the corner of your shader, very thin Yellow Green, Hauser Green Light, Country Blue, Wild Orchid. This is to simulate another lavender branch fading into the background. I also added, very sparingly, Frosted Plum. Dry and repeat as necessary, keeping light areas light, adding a bit more color around, and brighten lavender stem if necessary. This should fade into the background. Repeat above process, using the thin Bleached Sand (very 1

3 thin!), Antique White, Camel, then side-load Milk Chocolate with Camel and add darker color at top and bottom. While wet, spritz again with White and slip-slap Yellow Green above where the moth will be. Also dab in more color for the fading lavender stem. Again, don t stress! However you lay in your colors will be beautiful, just be sure to keep them light. You can repeat these steps until you get it to look the way you want. Base and Candle Cup: I used the same technique on these parts as above, but did not add the dabs of color to simulate the lavender stem. I added a bit more Yellow Green to the base toward the center. Painting Instructions: Lavender: Stem: Base with Hauser Green Light, using #2 round. I just did one coat. Shade at left of main stem and at bottom of each stem connected to the flowers with Hauser Green Medium. Add highlights to right side of main stem and tops and right sides (see step-by-step pic) with Chartreuse Yellow; add more highlights with Antique White; repeat, adding more highlights to brightest areas with Bleached Sand and/or Cool White. Add more shading where necessary with Light Avocado. Flowers: Base Pink Flowers with Lilac; base Blue Flowers with Wisteria. Highlight all petals at top and right sides (see step-by-step pic) with Soft Heather, then Bleached Sand. You can add some Cool White to brightest petals. Shade pink petals with Wild Orchid and blue petals with Country Blue. Add a dot of Milk Chocolate to center of full flowers with Milk Chocolate and your liner. Add a smaller dot of Camel for highlight. Fading Flowers: Some of the flowers are fading. Paint in with Camel; highlight with Bleached Sand. Shade with a mix of Camel + Milk Chocolate (approx. 1:1); add Country Blue to darkest areas. Shading Next to Stem: Dampen area to the left of stem with water, then lightly shade with Camel; dry. Repeat, adding Milk Chocolate to dirty brush. Repeat, adding Frosted Plum only to very bottom part of stem. Moth: Body: Paint in with a thin mix of Bright Green + Yellow Green (approx. 1:1). 4 with Frosted Plum. spots and the area for the eye with mix of Neutral Grey + Camel (approx. 1:2). Add more dots with Bleached Sand. Antennae, Tongue, Legs: Line in with a mix of Camel + Neutral Grey (approx. 2:1); add highlights to tips and bottom of antennae and where tongue meets body with Camel; add highlight to tip of antennae with Bleached Sand. Add highlights to legs with Bleached Sand. Wings: Back: Even though you only see a part of the back wing, I painted in the whole wing with a wash of Bleached Sand. The spots at the back edge of the wing are a thin wash of Neutral Grey + Camel (approx. 1:2), just enough so you see it. Shade next to body, walking this out about a quarter over the wing, with Camel. Top: The top of the top wing is a wash of Antique White which, again, I painted as a whole wing, rounding out the bottom edge. The round spots toward the center of that wing are a thin wash of Neutral Grey + Antique White (approx. 1:2); shade next to body, moving this color about halfway into wing and at bottom with a brush-mix of Camel + Neutral Grey (approx. 2:1)--be sure to keep this color light. Using 1/4 highlighter, drybrush a little Bleached Sand between these shadows for highlight. Bottom: The bottom is a wash of Chartreuse Yellow + Yellow Green (approx. 1:1). Using 1/2 highlighter, dry-brush Bleached Sand, then a little Cool White, in center for highlight. Shade bottom of this part of wing with Camel plus a titch of Milk Chocolate. Line top of bottom section of top wing with a mix of Camel + Neutral Grey (approx. 2:1); line all other sections of wing lightly with Cool White. Shade both sections of top wing and to separate top and bottom parts of that wing Small Moth: Body: Follow directions above except make this moth a bit lighter. The body is shaded next to wings with Neutral Grey + Camel (approx. 1:2) and highlighted with Bleached Sand at front. Antennae: Base with Neutral Grey + Camel (approx. 1:3); add liner of Bleached Sand for highlight. Wings: Base with a wash of Chartreuse Yellow + Yellow Green (approx. 1:1). Dot is a thin wash of Neutral Grey + Antique White (approx. 1:2). Shade next to body and about 1/16 from top of top part of wing with Neutral Grey + Camel (approx. 1:3). Add Glitter to Both Moths: Over very back wing of big moth, which was based Bleached Sand, add 3

5 Silver Bling Glitter Paint; over top of top wing which was based Antique White, add Golden Glitz Glitter Paint; over bottom of top wing and entire small moth, add Limelight Glitter Paint. Finishing: Final Shading: I added a bit more shading at top edges and bottom left of back of sconce; left side, front edges, and back right corner of base, and under rim on candle cup with light floats of Milk Chocolate; dry. Add more shading to top areas of back and left and right corners of base only with light floats of Frosted Plum. Using dry 1/2 highlighter, dry-brush Frosted Plum at top edge, blending into Milk Chocolate float. Line: Add a liner of Wild Orchid about 1/4 from edge of back of sconce. Edge: Base Wisteria. Add a wash of Frosted Plum, then lightly stipple with dry 1/2 highlighter. Finish with DuraClear Varnish. 4
