3 HELLO This winter there s a wealth of opportunity for visitors to look differently at the world. We welcome an ARTIST ROOMS exhibition by influential British artist, Richard Long. Richard uses natural materials to explore the relationship between natural forms and the landscape. We hope visitors will make a ready connection between this exhibition and our natural history collections to be inspired by nature. At Pickford s House, the Energetic programme will examine how the extraction of fossil fuels and use of energy shaped Derbyshire s landscape, society and culture. Photographs, artwork and objects, curated by our team together with University students, show how we might adapt to more sustainable forms of energy and climate change. Complementing Richard Long s response to nature will be an exhibition of work by Marion Adnams, the Derby-born surrealist. Adnams was little recognised in her lifetime but her work is in many public collections in the UK. This will be the first retrospective of her work, which is both curious and dream-like, and draws on a particular vision of nature. If these exhibitions point to a connectivity of humans and the natural world, our new permanent display Your Place in The World is all about a common human condition. The gallery is a timely reappraisal of our World Cultures collection featuring material from Asia, Africa, the Americas and the Pacific, and its presentation has involved hundreds of people from around the city. This winter there are plenty of opportunities for visitors to have their say about how these objects make them think, feel or do. The creation of a new Museum of Making at Derby Silk Mill reaches a key milestone, as last month it was confirmed that all 16.4m of funding for the project is now in place. We re really looking forward to building a unique museum which will be inspired by the makers of the past, made by the makers, empowers the makers of the future. 4 RICHARD LONG ARTIST ROOMS DRAWN FROM THE LAND 2 December March 2018 ADMISSION: Give What You Think Influential British artist Richard Long (b. 1945) makes art based on the action of walking in the natural landscape. Since the 1960s, he has created works in remote regions in Britain and all over the world, which are documented by photography or words. He has used maps, drawn lines, and taken photographs to articulate processes of measuring time and space. This exhibition, drawn from the ARTIST ROOMS collection, is an opportunity to explore the artist s radical re-thinking of art and landscape, set against the backdrop of Derby and the Peak District. The ARTIST ROOMS collection of modern and contemporary art is displayed across the UK in solo exhibitions that showcase the work of more than 40 major artists. The touring programme gives young people the chance to get involved in creative projects, discover more about art and learn new skills. Since 2009, 40 million people have visited more than 150 displays at over 75 museums and galleries. Jointly owned by the National Galleries of Scotland and Tate, ARTIST ROOMS was established through The d Offay Donation in 2008, with the assistance of the National Heritage Memorial Fund, Art Fund, and the Scottish and British Governments. The ARTIST ROOMS touring programme is delivered by the National Galleries of Scotland and Tate in a partnership with Ferens Art Gallery until 2019, supported using public funding by the National Lottery through Arts Council England, by Art Fund and by the National Lottery through Creative Scotland. 4

8 EXHIBITION THE FIRST MAJOR RETROSPECTIVE OF MARION ADNAMS WORK SINCE 1971 Marion Adnams - A Singular Woman 2 December March 2018 ADMISSION: Give What You Think Marion Adnams was born in Derby in 1898 where she remained, for the most part, until her death, aged ninety six. During the course of her long life, she forged a reputation as a painter of deeply distinctive and dream like visions inspired by the Surrealist movement. Adnams exhibited almost continuously in London and many regional art galleries from the late 1930s and examples of her work can be found in numerous public collections. Despite this, her work is largely forgotten today. This important exhibition brings together the full and diverse range of her art for the first time in almost fifty years in a bid to recapture the legacy of this most remarkable artist. This exhibition was made possible with support from Art Fund. This exhibition was curated in partnership with Val Wood, independent researcher, and Teresa Forde, Senior Lecturer in Film and Media at the University of Derby. 8

Help artist Tan Draig to create life-size paper sculptures inspired by Marion Adnams paintings of mysterious paper ladies; have a go at the Surrealist drawing game known as Exquisite Corpse, or simply pop along to enjoy the exhibition together as a family. 12 EXHIBITIONS Derbyshire Unearthed Part 1: Artefacts until 4 February 2018 Part 2: Coins and Coin Hoards 10 February -22 April 2018 This two-part exhibition celebrates the 20th anniversary of the implementation of the Treasure Act and the founding of the Portable Antiquities Scheme with a display of Treasure objects from Derby Museums collection that were discovered by the public in the local area, such as beautiful medieval gold jewellery, a Viking silver ingot and hoards of Roman coins. This exhibition forms part of the national 20 Years of Treasure celebrations organised in partnership with the British Museum. Go to to find out more. 13 LAST CHANCE TO SEE Dear Reader, An exhibition of paintings by Eleanor Watson the winner of the seventh Jonathan Vickers Fine Art Award. until 19 November ADMISSION: Give What You Think Responding to the theme of The Changing Faces of Derbyshire Eleanor s new body of work celebrates the lives of some of the women who have helped to make the county what it is today. Through her depictions of landscapes, interiors, still lifes, and film stills Eleanor provides us with a different perspective by which to consider the legacy of these extraordinary women. A Curious Turn until 19 November ADMISSION: Give What You Think A Curious Turn presents automata by leading makers of the last 40 years that range from the humorous to the macabre and from the playful to the satirical. Works on show take a look at key automata makers such as Rowland Emett, famous for creating the elaborate inventions of Caractacus Potts in the film Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (1968). Automata are moving mechanical sculptures that are brought magically to life by sequences of cogs, cams, and levers. Visitors will be able to turn, push and crank to see many of the pieces in action, while newly commissioned films will show other pieces in motion. 13

14 EXHIBITIONS Chai in the City until 18 November Pickford s House Artcore s project Chai and the City, dovetails into Britain s celebration of the 70th anniversary of India s Independence. It is comprised of two exhibitions linked together organically, showcasing artworks from 16 artists from both the UK and India on themes that closely link the two countries. The Indo-Saracenic architecture in India, designed by British architects, is the topic of an evocative exhibition of photographs of Baroda s impressive Indo-Saracenic heritage; the other exhibition focuses on the popular culture and history of drinking tea/chai in both countries, but in completely different ways. Artists have created painted story-books and ceramics that celebrate the tea-culture. Chai in the City Tea Party Saturday 18 November 11am-3pm Pickford s House Join us for a Chai and the City Tea Party focusing on bringing people together to share aspects of drinking tea, explore different tea drinking traditions and taste varieties of tea from around the world. 14

Energetic forms part of the Stories of Change project, which aims to stimulate lively conversations about energy by looking in a fresh way at its past, present and future. The project draws on history, literature and the arts to encourage a more imaginative approach to current and future energy choices, built around stories. 16 AN EMERGING EXHIBITION YOUR PLACE IN THE WORLD FREE An invitation to help shape our new World Cultures gallery. Working closely with you, we d like to share 100s of collection objects from around the world in a dynamic new space. This new gallery will explore the stories and themes that are important to you. The project space is open daily so please drop by to join in; we ll be sharing ideas as they develop. Come along to experience what has been co-designed so far and start to populate the space with your own thoughts and feelings. Make, play, learn and be part of the new gallery as we look at the colours, textures and materials of the collection. 21 MORE FANTASTIC EVENTS A Voyage of Discovery: Unearthing hidden treasures of Derbyshire Saturday 25 November 7-9pm Enjoy a special evening in the company of celebrity auctioneer Charles Hanson in the beautiful setting of the Joseph Wright Gallery. Charles will enlighten guests with his tales of adventure and surprise as a celebrity auctioneer in the County of Derbyshire and the many treasures he has revealed along the way. This event will help raise money for the Derby Museums Endowment, helping to secure the long term future of Derby Museums for everyone. Introduction to Furniture Making 5 day Workshop November 9am- 4pm each day The Silk Mill This course is designed to provide an introduction to contemporary and traditional methods and techniques used in bespoke furniture making. To book, please go to Dissolving borders - Building bridges Saturday 25 - Sunday 26 November This pop-up exhibition explores migration, citizenship and Our Heritage, and connects four generations. Young people and community members have recorded real life experiences and stories through interviews. The world on the move, post 1945, capturing facts of how Indian Independence and World War II related to migration to Derby and how life has changed over the decades. This exhibition is one of a series marking the 70th anniversary of Indian Independence. ENDOWMENT CAMPAIGN Supporting Derby Museums Future Derby Museums has been awarded a Heritage Endowment Grant by the Heritage Lottery Fund. Over the next four years Derby Museums aims to raise 1 million that will be matched pound for pound by the Heritage Lottery Fund. This will create a 2 million Endowment Fund that will be permanently invested to provide an income to help to support Derby Museums long term future. You can make a donation to our Endowment Fund at any time in our special box at the Museum and Art Gallery. Every 1 donated will be doubled by the Heritage Lottery Fund. Pickford s House is on routes 5, 28 & 29 and many bus routes pass close to the other two museums. By Car The and The Silk Mill have no parking facilities but there are plenty of car parks and spaces for Blue Badge holders nearby. Limited blue badge parking is available at The Silk Mill. Pickford s House has its own free car park accessed from Agard Street. By Rail Derby Railway Station is 1.2 miles away, approximately a 20 minute walk. 30

Go to page 33 for Christmas Opening Times THE SILK MILL Derby Silk Mill is midway through a five year 16.4m programme to create the Museum of Making at Derby Silk Mill, supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund, Derby City Council and Arts Council England. The Silk Mill is now closed to the public but is available to hire for corporate events and private celebrations. You can find venue hire on From 2018 the building will undergo a full redevelopment and is scheduled to reopen fully in 2020, bringing thousands of visitors to the city each year. Museum of Making at Derby Silk Mill will display fascinating items from Derby's rich industrial history, celebrating the makers of the past; and will be designed to empower makers of the future through inspirational environments for learning programmes and activities.
