Happy New Year and welcome back for the 2017 Sandpiper Gallery show and workshop year. Please send your many thanks to Marie Stockhill, our newsletter editor for the last 10 years or so, and our new volunteer newsletter editor, Jil Roberts. Also please welcome new 2017 Gallery Board Members: Laura Reynolds Gallery Director, Heather Holmes Vice President, and our new voting Members-at-Large, Barb Shrider and Karla Martinson. We ask that if you have a question or suggestion about Gallery Shows, Gift shop, Workshops, Festivals, or other Gallery activities to please contact the various Board Members or Committee Chairs that are responsible for the activity first. A list of these positions and their contact information is on the last page of this newsletter or obtain a copy at the gallery. Be sure to bring friends and family to enjoy all of the upcoming shows, and take advantage of the workshops offered this year. From the Gallery Director, Laura Reynolds Good news everybody, 2017 is off to a great start! The gallery was closed for a week for maintenance and inventory, but it was worth it. The gallery is looking clean and fresh. I want to personally thank all of our artists who submitted works for the first open show, "Baby, It's Cold Outside". The art is amazing, as always, and I'm super excited about the level of interest the artists and our community are displaying this year. Some 2017 brochures have been printed and are available in the gallery. We will have more in the next week or so, once you have all had an opportunity to look them over and give them a thumbs up. Our next show "Everything Happens for a Reason" will begin February 28th. Thanks again for supporting the gallery and keep up the good works!

2 Baby, it s Cold Outside! If you haven t been to the gallery recently, do stop in and check out our current display. Here are just a few items on show this month:

Holly Wurl Cathy Calkins Karla Martinson Marge Christensen Lynn Johnson Carol Daniels Laura Reynolds Sue Arneson SAG is most appreciative of your time & energy that made our January 20th event a success. The show looks great under Laura's direction and also with the help of some members. Sincerely, Alice Varnum, Open House Organizer. *If I have forgotten anyone, please let me know! The next Open House is set for March 3, 5-7:00 pm. Volunteers will be needed to make this event another wonderful evening. Please consider bringing food, helping with set up or clean up. ********************************************************************************* RENTAL PROGRAM UPDATE: Call for Art is for our established Rental Program. We offer framed paintings and photographs to the Polson Business Community for rent. Please bring your art to the Gallery and fill out a card and Rental Consignment Form on Saturday February 4, 2017, between the hours of 10 am to 4 pm. This is a great way to make a little money and not have to store your art in your home or studio. Additionally it gets your name and the Sandpiper's name out to the community we serve. If you have questions please contact the Gallery at Thank you, Nancy Miller and CarolRae Koenig ******************************************************************************** Artist Social What is it? A casual gathering in the work room of the gallery for SAG members to bring an art project they d like to work on while sharing conversation with other community artists. 5 The Sandpiper Festival Committee is busy planning for our summer art festivals. Please mark your calendars and plan to participate as an artist and/or volunteer! FLATHEAD LAKE FESTIVAL OF ART July 29 & 30, 2017 The Third Annual Flathead Lake Festival of Art will be held on Saturday & Sunday, July 29 & 30, Show hours: Saturday, 10am-6pm - Sunday, 10am-5pm New date, same place for 2017! It became apparent that our festival would benefit from being a stand-alone event during the high tourist season. Although we are no longer paired with the Blues Festival, this art festival is scheduled during the busy tourist season in and around the Flathead Valley. We will once again be located in Sacajawea Park with high visibility from the Polson Bay and bridge. This 2-day festival is more stringently juried than the one-day event in August and attracts artists from Montana and the greater northwest region. 46 th ANNUAL SANDPIPER ART FESTIVAL Saturday, August 12, 2017 Show hours: 10am - 5pm Founded in 1971, the Sandpiper Art Festival is a juried, outdoor festival that features fine art and artisan crafts. The festival is attended by thousands of people and is a great opportunity for sales and exposure to new patrons. The festival will once again will be held on the same day as the Car Show. *The Sandpiper webpage, sandpiperartgallery.com, is in the process of being updated with current information and application forms for artists and food vendors. *Please note our new contact addresses for festival and workshop info: Festivals & Workshops: sandpiperartgallery@gmail.com

6 Gift Shop News - Sue Arneson, Director Now that the Christmas rush is over, it s a new year!! Think about creating something you have never done before or focus your paintings or sculptures on something different. If you ve always painted flowers, try painting animals! You ve always painted fish or done carving, try doing a 3D sculpture, stained glass, or block printing. Try pastels on top of watercolor, try ink with your paints, try embossing a background, try mixing different media to create something unique! If you are like me, I m always trying something new. Now.. I tend to look around at all things, small objects and such, as a possibility for something to do with art. Do you know what I mean? To quote Barb Shrider, watercolor artist, our enthusiasm is contagious!! Pass it on.. Have you looked at the Gift Shop lately? There are a lot of new art pieces and excellent choices for gifts. We hope you ll keep our art gallery in mind when you re looking for that special gift for someone or even treating yourself! As you may or may not realize, we are so proud of each and every artist in our gallery. We ve had many compliments from familiar and new who have entered and are surprised by the excellence of our work. Keep it up! Favorite thoughts Don t worry about your originality. You couldn t get rid of it, even if you wanted to. It will stick with you and show up for better or worse, in spite of all you or anyone else can do. Robert Henri Creative work is not a selfish act or a bid for attention on the part of the artist. It s a gift to the world and every being in it. Don t cheat us of your contribution. Give us what you ve got! Steven Pressfield Greetings from your Newsletter Editor, Jil Roberts Hello everyone! I am fairly new to the SAG and have enjoyed volunteering in the gallery and now taking on the monthly newsletter. I have met some wonderful artists and patrons over the past year and look forward to getting to know everyone involved in our fabulous gallery. My current art is creating concrete leaves and painting them with a spray or brush. I use real leaves as my mold, so I am busiest in the non-winter months. Over this current winter I have learned pine needle basket weaving and am enjoying that very much. I love being outdoors and can often be seen bringing home pieces of nature with ideas swirling in my head of what I can do with my lovely finds. Please let me know if you have anything you d like to see in future newsletters or have any comments you d like to share about the gallery or newsletter. Thank you for your support! jilbrownlee@gmail.com
