2 PRESS RELEASE Lullin + Ferrari are delighted to present Lausanne based artist David Hominal (b Evian) in his first important solo exhibition in Zurich. In 2007 Hominal s solo show at the Musée cantonal des Beaux-Arts in Lausanne, fetchingly titled You ll Never Walk Alone attracted much attention amongst the general public and the art world. The title refers to a 1963 song by Gerry & The Pacemakers, sung by the supporters of Liverpool Football Club moments before the start of each home game. Indeed Hominal didn t walk alone for long. The museum bought works and a catalogue was published. In the last couple of years, several group exhibitions have shown Hominal to be a most versatile artist: In A Fantasy for the Moment, Kunsthalle Bern (2007) he combined paintings with assemblages; in the thematic show Shifting Identities, Kunsthaus Zurich (2008) he showed paintings as well as a group of works on paper which demonstrated the artist s intensive and expressive pictorial language. In our show Hominal dedicates himself to the classical art historical genre of still life. The topic of the still life is a recurring theme in his oeuvre. Hominal is intrigued by the varying denominations of the genre in different languages; in French the genre is called Nature Morte, death nature, in Belgian Stilleven and in German Stillleben. The artist also connects the expression still alive in an associative way with the name of the genre. Most of Hominal s works in the exhibition are located within this reference system, but at the same time the single paintings sometimes cleverly distance themselves from the boundaries of the genre. This strategy is clearly exemplified by the painting Hominal Stilleven, which depicts a painted stretcher-frame and the back of a fictitious canvas on which the artist s name and the title of the picture are recorded. In spring 2008 Hominal obtained a residency in the Belgian port Antwerp. There he painted some of the still lifes shown in our exhibition: Crevettes Stilleven, Pakistan Long Grain Rice and the three paintings titled Diamond Stilleven. Hominal might have been inspired in his choice of subject by Antwerp, its harbour, as well as by his impressions of the city as a world centre of the diamond trade and as an economic powerhouse. Nevertheless Hominal stresses that his choice of motives cannot be deduced to the place of origin of his works of art. The references to the city, to history and to the narrative are not crucial. In his work Hominal investigates the value system in the exchange of goods and illusions. This is also revealed in the series of works called Stilleven (T a pas une clope?) (Could you give me a fag?). Hominal bought so-called projection lighters which can project a round image of a naked woman or an explicit scene onto a wall. He then transferred the round image on a rectangular canvas. Their keyhole format convey these depictions a voyeuristic element and their blue margins a volatile quality. Hominal is intrigued by the way an image is constructed. He is concerned with the conflict of figuration and abstraction. Often his paintings allude to art history: two Diamond Stilleven refer to the Egg paintings by Andy Warhol. The landscape I Have to Go There is reminiscent of the Dutch conceptual artist Bas Jan Ader, who in 1975, 33 years old, was lost at sea while attempting a singlehanded west-east crossing of the Atlantic in a pocket cruiser. The crossing was part of an art performance called In Search of the Miraculous. Through its deep horizon the painting The Bridge is Up refers to the Romantic movement. In his exhibitions Hominal weaves together a myriad of associations. He creates conceptual exhibitions, in which the public has to unfold the meaning. On the one hand the single images stand for themselves, on the other hand they receive through the dialogue with the other works new layers of meaning.
