Who s hanging at the Gallery this month? Reneé Nelson: Born and raised in Fresno, California, Renee served 8 years in the US Air Force, travelled, completed college, and got married.

Reneé's first love, creatively speaking, is writing, and she soon completed her MFA in Writing Popular Fiction, followed by the writing and publication of a novel, "Meinong's Jungle.

2 Who s hanging at the Gallery this month? Reneé Nelson: Born and raised in Fresno, California, Renee served 8 years in the US Air Force, travelled, completed college, and got married. While husband, Frank, remained in the military, the family continued traveling until finally settling in Maryland. Reneé's first love, creatively speaking, is writing, and she soon completed her MFA in Writing Popular Fiction, followed by the writing and publication of a novel, "Meinong's Jungle." She has taught creative writing at the local college and at senior and community centers in MD/VA/DC area. Involved in various creative arts over the years, she has been painting more seriously for about eight years with special interest in watercolors and encaustics. She also sculpts, works with fused glass, and makes beaded jewelry. Of her art she says, I get the most joy from creating art that is emotionally evocative... that causes the reader or viewer to feel something, to be moved in some way. She currently lives in Southern Maryland with her husband and 2 dogs. Patricia Fecko: Pat was born and raised in the suburbs of Chicago. After marriage, Pat and her husband, Kit, moved to Maryland where they started their family. About 12 years ago, Pat s passion for art led her to take some classes at the Art League s Torpedo Factory in Alexandria. This is where she met and formed a close friendship with Reneé. Pat has been painting ever since. Watercolor is Pat s medium of choice, loving the subtleties of how the colors blend on the paper. Nature is her inspiration. She says I'm in awe of the beautiful colors and endless shapes that occur in nature. Pat now lives near Bethany Beach, Delaware with her husband and beagle, but still visits her two sons and their families in Maryland.

Wine and Cheese Critiques with Hugh O Neill has also been added to the schedule on Friday, October 9 th from 6 8 p.m. The cost is $10 per person. Sue Smith, New York Your explanation that the creation of a decent painting does not necessarily require the skill of a draftsman but only the proper arrangement of colors to provide the wanted visual effect was especially valuable to me, having been trained as an engineer, to learn that it is not necessary that a good painting be technically correct, but only that it needs to be visually correct. 4 Are you aware that we hang art in The Community Bank of Chesapeake in La Plata? The Community Bank of Chesapeake has been gracious enough to offer members of MCAC their space to hang 2-dimensional art in La Plata. The next show will start on Oct. 30 th with Norma Baretincic collecting pictures the 24 th of October from 10:00 a.m. 1:00 p.m. at MCAC. We can hang approximately 20 pictures and they will remain in the bank through February The price is $5.00 per picture and only two submissions allowed. The items are for sale so take advantage of this opportunity to show your work at another venue. For more info Norma at What does the Workshop Committee have planned for October??? Mat Cutting Tips and Tricks Saturday, Oct 24 from 1-4 p.m. Fee: $40 members / $50 nonmembers Instructor: Harriett Lawler Learn how to use a mat cutter to cut mats with a minimum of fuss. You will learn how to measure using a simple system and will have the opportunity to practice cutting mats cleanly and efficiently. If you already own a mat cutter, bring it with you. If not, we will provide some for practice. Inexpensive mat board will also be provided. Sunday, Oct 11 from 1-3 p.m. Fee: $40 members / $50 nonmembers Instructor: Bryan Swann Flowers are beautiful. Art is stunning. Flowers as art takes you someplace different altogether. Bryan Swann will teach the class in which we will learn how to make a construction that will take the typical floral arrangement to a place of fine art. We will explore color and line and shape. Everyone will leave with an arrangement and inspiration for your upcoming holidays. Bryan has studied with some of the best floral designers in the floral industry worldwide and will bring this unique perspective to MCAC. $25 material fee will be due to the instructor.

5 What s coming in November: Painting Wine Glasses Plus Sunday, Nov 8 from 1 4:00 p.m. Fee: $45 members / $55 nonmembers Instructors: Norma Baretincic & Nancy Owens An Afternoon of Wine, Dine and Paint for the Ladies. Join us for heavy hors d'oeuvres, wine and conversation while learning how to paint your own wine glasses. We will have lots of examples of patterns for you to paint on your four glasses that are yours to keep or give as gifts. And did we mention, Wine??? All materials supplied. Class size is limited to 10 people so please sign up early to get a spot. (all levels) What s coming in December: HOLIDAY SALON Would you like to display your holiday art and crafts and not have to sit at the table? Docents will handle the sales October 23 December 13. The opening reception is Sunday, October 25, 1:00 4:00. This year there will be tree ornaments for sale with all proceeds going to support MCAC. We are asking our supporters for the donation of hand-made ornaments for this tree. A form is attached to this Newsletter with all the information. 8 GUIDELINES: Mattawoman Creek Art Center HOLIDAY SALON October 23 - December 13, 2015 Eight 3-Day Weekends to Sell Your Art! Exhibitors need not be present during all show times; docents* will handle sales for you! * Exhibitors must agree to docent at least once during the eight-weekend exhibit. Opening Reception is Sunday, October 25, 1-4 p.m. Artists are encouraged to attend. The Holiday Tea is Sunday, November 22, 1-4 p.m. Artists are encouraged to attend. Each space is approximately 6 x 8. Walls behind your space may be used as you wish. (Art weighing over 30 lb. needs approval before being hung to prevent damage). IF applicable, contact Jo Ann (See below). Tables, racks, easels, etc. may be used within your allotted space. All spaces have aisle access. Assigned spaces will be designated for each artist. Preferences will be accommodated where possible. There is a limit of 2 artists per space. Exhibitors are responsible for setting up and taking down their own exhibits. Exhibitors are responsible for their own inventory and items. MCAC is not liable for any loss or damage. Every piece of artwork, no matter how small or inexpensive, must be labeled with the artist s initials, an ID # unique to the piece/type, and price. A list (by ID #) of all items for sale must be provided to MCAC. Labeling Instructions and an easy to use inventory form will be provided via when entry is received. Contrary to usual rules, artwork shown at MCAC within the past year may be included in this show. Art may not be switched between the gift shop and salon for the duration of the Holiday Salon show. Only original artwork and prints of the artist s original artwork are to be displayed. All pieces must be for sale. MCAC retains 25% commission on sales. Entry Fee: $30 per space for MCAC members and $45 for non-members. Reserve Your Space: Spaces must be reserved with payment by October 18, Fill out entry form below and return to: MCAC: P.O. Box 258, Marbury, MD 20658, or call Jo Ann (see below) to reserve your space with a credit card. We need your address to send you additional information. Space is limited. Artwork Delivery Date: Exhibits can be set up 11:00 a.m. 4:00 p.m. Thursday or Friday, October 22-23, or 08:30-10:30 a.m. on Saturday, October 24. Art work may be replaced when sold during the show. Retrieval Date: Exhibits may not be removed before 4:00 p.m. on Sunday December 13, but must be removed by Wednesday, December 16. Select a time when you set up your artwork. *LIABILITY: All work will be handled with all possible care. MCAC will not be responsible for any loss or damage. MCAC will not be responsible for work left after retrieval dates. After 30 days, abandoned items will become the property of MCAC.
