August 19 th : SMAS BBQ hosted by Sue and John Giesy. COMMENTARY When we decided to participate in the Mini Maker Faire, nobody was quite sure what to expect. As it was, Colin Kunkel took on the job of coordinator to arrange things with the organizers. It looked as though things were going to be a tight fit with only a limited amount of space available. On the morning of the Faire the situation changed as the organizers had a couple of no-shows and so gave us an extra 10 feet of room. SMAS also had some no-shows which meant that those of us who were there had all sorts of room for both building and displaying. Unfortunately we had not taken a whole lot of finished models. In fact all of Wes Braid s truck fleet was still parked in Tessier. In mentioning no-shows from the club, we have to ask people that have their name down, but are unable to attend for any reason, to please let the coordinator know ahead of time. That will allow for adjustments to be made where necessary. Saturday, June 9 th will be the first Workshop of 2018 hosted by Greg Burke. The intention is to have both morning and afternoon sessions, with a BBQ at lunchtime. Probably painting will be the major focus, especially air brushing. Things are changing constantly when it comes to paints in the industry the manufacturers and applicators prefer to use the term coating rather than painting. To my mind the latest and greatest acrylic house paints are the equal of most hobby paints. It sounds odd to talk about old technology from the last century but that is really what it is. The idea that pigments for hobby paints have to be ground way finer is almost certainly obsolete. As far as I know current acrylic paints are totally made from liquid resins, including liquid dyes, so no grinding is involved. Whatever the reason there is much greater choice than there ever was previously. - Mike Reid SMAS WEBSITE Need to find SMAS newsletter back issues? Check us out! 3 PAINT PALLETTE Found a couple of potentially useful metallic, acrylic paints in one of the Martha Stewart ranges carried by Michael s Crafts. The range is called Home Décor intended for both indoor and outdoor use. The two I tried are called BLACKENED IRON and OIL RUBBED BRONZE. Rather oddly the Blackened Iron looks more like a coppery/bronze than anything. Shown in Photo 1 are jet nozzles painted with Blackened Iron. By itself the paint is quite shiny so these nozzles were treated with acrylic flat coat. In fact a better approach would be to add some Tamiya FLAT BASE to reduce the shine. Then in Photo 2 is Oil Rubbed Bronze just brush painted onto the inside of a vacuform fuselage under construction (it was just a convenient place to try it). I know some people do not want to get into mixing their paint colours, but to me it is just a part of the hobby. Anyone that builds Tamiya car kits will be familiar with having to mix paints, simply because the Tamiya paint range is limited. In this case adding Oil Rubbed Bronze to some Martha Stewart metallic Pure Platinum produced an impressive steel colour. In Photo 3 it was brush painted onto cast resin items, part of an ANIGRAND kit. No preparation of the parts was done so that is why the surface looks a bit rough in places. But at 1/72 nd scale inside an engine cowling the roughness will never be noticed. Photo 1 - Mike Reid Photo 2 Photo 3 3

6 PEEK IN THE BOX...OR TWO! I ve attached a few pictures of my latest acquisitions, which were ordered from Scratchaeronautics the first month of January and arrived on the 10 th of May. I read a bad trader alert on a modelling forum about this company (a one man show) for not delivering an order. Upon reading that complaint I panicked a bit and gave the manufacturer an . It was replied to promptly and informatively where he told me he makes the kits upon receipt of an order receipt, so he stocks nothing pre-made. He told me he would get on my order as soon as he could. He works for a living and does this as a sideline. If I could remember the forum I read that complaint on I would do my best to enlighten the complainant. In any case, here are some pictures of the Scatchaeronautic Resin kits of the CASA C-296 and CASA C-235. Pictures 1 through 7 are the C-235, while the remaining pictures are the C-295. He also makes and supplies markings for various air forces, with stenciling and a clear sheet to cut for the windows. The resin is for the most part clean and with no large bubble trouble. Being a garage kit it is not Photo 1 Photo 3 Photo 2 completely free of bubbles but, (in my opinion) it is perfectly acceptable and very well done. Included is a close-up of the kit s flight deck components, instrument panel, side panels etc. to show the detail included there...i am excited about beginning work on these models. 8 SHOPPING CART - A NEW KID ON THE BLOCK More correctly that should read New Putty in the Store. Recently released by Squadron Signal it received a rave review from Ken Kolenovsky at the last Sunday Build. It cures to a very hard surface which sands well. Not only that but it will take a certain amount of moulding in thin layers. It was used to build up the inside of a vacuform engine cowling which I had opened up too much. Usually a repair such as that I would attempt with Milliput, even though such small amounts of two-part epoxy putty can be difficult to mix exactly. So far the Squadron putty looks as though it will be just the ticket. As noted with the additional pic, the putty comes in white and green too. - Mike Reid Ray Moskowec - President Ph: ttmoskowec@hotmail.com SMAS Executive Mike Reid - Vice-President Ph: minreid@shaw.ca Mike Reid - Newsletter Editor Ph: minreid@shaw.ca Rick Hales - Treasurer Ph: richale@sasktel.net Printing Courtesy of New Address!
