1 Canton Artists League News An affiliate of Canton Museum of Art 1001 Market Ave North, Canton, OH Notes from Red Raccoon Bellissimo at Gervasi Vineyard was an adventure. (Isabel was in the pavilion and I haven t talked with her to find out how she survived.) People from Gervasi were very helpful assisting artists transport supplies from the parking lot and setting up booths. Since it was a very hot day, Gervasi had set up some large fans. One fan even had a hose attached that sprayed a fine mist to cool us off. People from Gervasi walked around with pitchers of ice water for us to drink. While Rick watched my booth, I had a chance to make a quick run through the show and was able to get a quick overview of the booths before the show opened. People began viewing the artwork in the booths shortly before the show opened at 2 PM. Many artists were watching the radar on cell phones. Storms were headed towards Akron. We re OK. The storms are north and should not affect us. But wait! There s more! A storm cell heading right for us. Oh No! Gervasi was passing out side panels for the canopies. Of course they did not fit perfectly. I was given three. No sooner than we had the Upcoming Meetings September 21 Meet Our CAL Family, Session 4 (Continued on page 2) We will be learning about 15 of our members and their work. Each of these members will share something about themselves for three minutes each. Following this sharing, there will be open discussion and conversation. Don t miss the opportunity to learn more about others! Let s all show support or those who are sharing. See you at 6:00 PM. CAL Family Programs are designed to be most meaningful if all who are able attends If you have not had a chance to share, contact Sharon Mazgaj (contact info in officers column) October 19 - Reception at Stark in place of meeting at CMA Officers President Irene Tobias Rodriguez Vice President Frank Dale dulcipix@ameritech.net Secretary Susan Kelewae suekekewae@sssnet.com Treasurer Sharon Mazgaj sfmazgaj@neo.rr.com Board Members Megan Farrabee meganfarrabee@gmai l.com Suni Lopez-Otriz natividad@att.net Cynthia Capestrain cynartist70@gmail.com Lynn Weinstein lweinstein44@gmail.com 1

2 (Continued from page 1) third panel up on the front, the windward side, about 2:30, it hit...in full force! The wind blew the Velcro holding the panel to the canopy loose. We had to grab the Velcro and hold on against the wind that was trying to blow the panel into my booth. The canopy tried to take off in one corner. (We could not pound our stakes fully into the ground because of the under ground sprinkler system.) Of course the canopy filled with water and over flowed through the space between the canopy and the side panel where I was holding it up. I had more than one shower. I was drenched, down to my toenails. Everything on my table was wet. Reproductions and note cards were in plastic envelopes and were not damaged, although they needed to be dried out after I returned home. The cardboard box was another story. My fabric wallet in my fanny pack and everything in it was soaked. Quilts that had been hanging on the outside of my display were wet, but fabric dries. A few drops of water on my paintings did not harm them. They were protected towards the back of the booth. Other booths were not so lucky. The booth next to mine had a shelf unit blow over and thin geodes broken. I m sure other booths had losses also. The storm passed and the sun came out and we surveyed the damages and tried to dry things off. The customers who had not been chased off came out from the protection of the pavilion and restaurant. A few people looked behind the side panels to see the art, but most just walked by. The show was finished. Another storm cell was spotted on the radar so we were permitted to pack up and leave before it hit. One cannot predict, when a show is scheduled, what the weather will be. We take our chances when we sign up for a show. (I sold a couple paintings so the show was not a total loss) We Need YOU! As you can see on page 3, we have several exhibits planned. We need people to help with the planning and set up for these exhibits. If you can help a little or a lot, Please contact any member of the CAL Board. (Contact information is on page 1.) Current Exhibits at On View: September 1 October, 2016 An all-ohio exhibit featuring artists Judy Brandon of Cleveland, Leslie Shiels of Cincinnati, and Carol Snyder of Columbus. With defining voices in both images and words, these artists bring their thoughts, concerns, and life experiences to our attention through watercolor, oil, and porcelain creations. The conversations inspired by these women and their art focus on life and conflict. They are looking for visual threads to sew eras, cultures and people together; to tie our lives with our natural world creating a life experience for audiences to reflect upon. This exhibition is presented in part by the Volunteer Angels of the Canton Museum of Art. For more information see 2

3 CAL CMA Wall Artists September - Dharitri Tripathy Dharitri Tripathy is a Canton, Ohio based artist specializing in multi-disciplinary forms of art mediums like oil, acrylic and Zentangle pen art. A masters in economics graduate, she is now a devoted artist and also a certified Zentangle teacher (completed her certification program from Zentangle Inc, Rhode Island, USA). She has widely travelled around the world, lived in China, India and now currently residing with her family in US over four years. The avid travel enthusiast that she is, Dharitri has converted the travel opportunity to learn new forms of art as she visited various countries and weaved it together in a non-traditional yet creative way. Her unique blend of art forms have been recognized at various art shows including 2015 People s Choice award at Massillon Museum of Art, and First Place award at 73rd Annual May Show at The little art gallery of the North Canton Public Library. Dharitri also loves teaching art especially for children and is also engaged actively with the Stark county community especially with several rehabilitation homes where she teaches Zentangle art, a meditative art practice to support the patients recovery process. Dharitri is committed to continue her efforts to widen her knowledge on various other art forms and learn from the other artists in the community. October Nancy Michel dharitritripathy1@gmail.com, I am now enjoying retirement after thirty-six years of teaching art. My greatest passion is to be with my family and friends. I also love to read ALMOST as much as I love to create art! I take my dog Darcy ( think "Mr.Darcy" in the book Pride and Prejudice) on a two mile walk every morning, and love to walk in my pool in the summer!!! I'm excited to be featured on the wall in October as my daughter's wedding reception is being held the same month in the Great Court! Thanks to C.A.L. for providing this opportunity!
