2 One City One Summer it s liverpool Rich in culture, Liverpool s often collective approach creates surprising and unmissable events that are the rocket fuel for the city s renaissance and its international aspirations. Both its grand and more intimate spaces host unique experiences where heritage mixes with contemporary culture. Liverpool is home to some of the finest international art collections and cultural organisations, shaped by its compelling history, and we use these to look to the future with art and performances that are fresh, exciting and bold. You can get your cultural fix in Liverpool at any time of the year but this summer as part of the One City, One Summer cultural programme for the International Festival for Business (IFB) 2014, the city s theatres, its orchestra, festivals, galleries, museums and performers of every kind present a sparkling season of over 120 events that includes a number of new commissions and a festival every weekend. You won t have time to take in everything, but you can always come back to experience Liverpool s unique and distinctive cultural life, all year round. This week, Liverpool s music takes centre stage: Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra and its artist in residence Simon Trpčeski perform Shostakovich s brilliant First Piano Concerto on 15 June. Then, in Liverpool Cathedral, Chief Conductor Vasily Petrenko leads the Orchestra and Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Choir in a concert of soaring spiritual music on 17 June. Barbara Dickson, the original star of Willy Russell s Blood Brothers, visits on 20 June and Africa Oyé festival headlined this year by Mobo and BRIT award winner Finley Quaye will see some 30,000 people head to Sefton Park on 21 and 22 June.

3 THIS WEEK S EVENTS For further details visit ifb2014.com/culture JUNE FUTURE CITY Albert Dock The third and final pop up exhibition in Placed s Hidden Liverpool series, which explores ideas for re-using the city s empty public buildings JUNE MERSEYSIDE ADVENTURE SAILING TRUST THE APPRENTICE SHIP CUP UK West Coast Eight traditional tall ships crewed by over 150 young apprentices aged will take part in a race along the UK west coast. 16 JUNE 16 JULY FESTIVAL 31 Various venues Liverpool s first official festival celebrating arts and culture from refugee communities, and discourse around the refugee experience over 31 days. 17 JUNE Ticketed AFTERNOON TEA AT THE ATHENAEUM Athenaeum An opportunity to visit the Athenaeum and have a tour of one of the finest private members clubs in the UK. 17 JUNE Ticketed IN CONVERSATION WITH MICHAEL HESELTINE St George s Hall The ex-deputy Prime Minister and Minister For Merseyside will talk about his life and career. Musicians perform his five favourite pieces of music. 18 JUNE LIVERPOOL ART PRIZE AWARDS CEREMONY Edge Hill Station The prestigious 2000 Liverpool Art Prize and 1000 People s Choice award winners are announced for JUNE Ticketed CATHEDRAL CLASSICS Liverpool Cathedral Vasily Petrenko conducts the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra and Choir in sacred music played in the setting for which it was intended.

4 THIS WEEK S EVENTS 21 JUNE 12 JULY Ticketed DEAD DOG IN A SUITCASE (AND OTHER LOVE SONGS) Everyman Theatre Everyman and Kneehigh collaborate on a radical new version of the Beggar s Opera, John Gay s classic musical satire. Bursting with wit, wonder and weirdness. UNTIL 31 JULY SPANISH PAVILION Fallout Factory Specially commissioned as part of the International Festival for Business, Fallout Factory will play host to Spanish Pavilion, a new and exciting collaboration between Fallout Factory and overseas Spanish galleries. 20 JUNE Ticketed BARBARA DICKSON AND RAB NOAKES Floral Pavilion, New Brighton Both performers have won awards and praise for their solo work. They perform a wonderful blend of folk songs, classic pop and selfwritten favourites. 20 JUNE 21 SEPTEMBER ROSSETTI S OBSESSION: IMAGES OF JANE MORRIS Lady Lever Art Gallery Jane Burden Morris was the favoured model of painter Dante Gabriel Rossetti. This exhibition brings together compelling examples of this pictorial obsession JUNE Ticketed LIV-BCN The Kazimier and The Kazimier Garden A celebration of the rich artistic offerings from Liverpool and Barcelona, two metropolitan fountains of creativity that have a lot in common JUNE AFRICA OYÉ Sefton Park The UK s largest festival of African and Caribbean music and culture. Hear some of the best music the world has to offer in Liverpool s Sefton Park. Finley Quaye headlines. 22 JUNE Ticketed PIRASHANNA THEVARAJAH Capstone Theatre A chance to see the versatile multi-percussionist Pirashanna Thevarajah, who has performed with many of the world s foremost Indian musicians. 22 JUNE Ticketed SUNDAY SERENADE St. George s Hall Concert Room The extraordinary strings of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra perform music including Stravinsky s Concerto in D, and Dvořák s Serenade for Strings.

The last chance to see the work of the 2014 Liverpool Art Prize winner. 20TH CENTURY CHIC Sudley House Charting 100 years of women s fashion, from the corsets and petticoats of the Belle Epoque to the designer-labelled spandex of the 90s. UNTIL 22 JUNE 2014 EBB AND FLOW: A VISUAL CHRONICLE OF THE CHANGES WITHIN LIVERPOOL S CHINATOWN Open Eye Gallery A photographic survey of the history and changes of the one the oldest Chinese communities in the UK. See the spectacular machinery used by scientists and enjoy interactive displays.

7 ONGOING DAZZLE SHIP A dry dock near Albert Dock Liverpool Biennial and Tate Liverpool have jointly commissioned Carlos Cruz- Diez to dazzle a historic pilot ship as part of 2014 s WW1 commemorations. MON, TUE, WED, FRI Ticketed (free) WORLD DANCE, ZUMBA AND YOGA CLASSES AND EVENTS The Black-E World dance, zumba and yoga classes and events, high-energy, fun dance classes and workouts taught by world dance specialists. UNTIL 2015 OPERA FOR CHINATOWN Duke Street Terraces A vibrant installation by The Sound Agents transforms the façade of Duke Street s vacant properties, depicting some of the people of Liverpool s Chinatown. UNTIL 1 JAN 2015 ST HELENA International Slavery Museum This exhibition will focus on one of the most important archaeological finds of recent times in one of the most remote places on earth. UNTIL DECEMBER 2017 TITANIC AND LIVERPOOL: THE UNTOLD STORY Merseyside Maritime Museum This compelling exhibition explores Liverpool s central role in the Titanic story, featuring previously unseen collections of international significance. ONGOING WALL WORK: PAUL MORRISON NEW COMMISSION Open Eye Gallery Liverpool-born artist Paul Morrison transforms the facade of the gallery and adjoining public space with a large monochromatic installation. UNTIL 1 JUNE 2015 SAIL AWAY: LIVERPOOL SHIPPING POSTERS Merseyside Maritime Museum This exhibition features 14 posters dating from 1888 to 1980, advertising Liverpool shipping companies. Some have never been displayed before.

8 FORTHCOMING HIGHLIGHTS 5 JULY 26 OCTOBER LIVERPOOL BIENNIAL 2014: THE UK BIENNIAL OF CONTEMPORARY ART Various locations Liverpool Biennial 2014 includes the curated exhibition A Needle Walks into a Haystack at the Bluecoat, FACT, Old School for the Blind and Tate Liverpool plus the John Moores Painting Prize, Bloomberg New Contemporaries and exhibitions at Open Eye Gallery and the Exhibition Research Centre JULY BRAZILICA FESTIVAL Various locations The UK s largest samba carnival event, with a spectacular procession weaving its way through the city centre on Saturday 19 July. The festival also showcases Brazilian music,exhibitions, films and workshops JULY BROUHAHA LIVERPOOL INTERNATIONAL CARNIVAL Various locations Music, dance, theatre and community and carnival events throughout the city. On 12 July, 1000 costumed participants take to the streets in a celebration of the city s diversity and creativity, and at Princes Park, visitors can enjoy performances, global foods and arts workshops JULY MEMORIES OF AUGUST 1914 Various locations The Giants return to provide the spectacular finale to the IFB 2014 cultural programme, a commemoration of 100 years since the outbreak of the First World War. It features the Little Girl Giant, her dog Xolo, and a new grandmother giant. A must-see AUGUST LIVERPOOL INTERNATIONAL MUSIC FESTIVAL Sefton Park and other locations After the success of last year s event, Liverpool International Music Festival will return in August With the major focus over the Bank Holiday weekend, the event will span several venues across the city for a fun-packed summer of music.
