Art Society of Strathcona County Mailing Address: P. O. Box 3061 Sherwood Park, AB T8H 2T1 Street Address: 590 Broadmoor Blvd. Sherwood Park Ph: Gallery: Memory March 2017 NEWSLETTER I was saddened and shocked to learn of Roy McLaughlin's death on Feb 19th. Roy had a vision of creating a photography group within the Art Society. In 2013, with my encouragement and the approval of the Board, Roy successfully established a group of ASSC member camera buffs. At the monthly meetings, many photo outings and workshops Roy enthusiastically shared his love of the camera and his photographic skills. On behalf of the ASSC we wish our Photography Group much success as they continue to fulfil Roy's legacy. Elaine Tweedy
PRESIDENT S MESSAGE! March is upon us and march forward we will. It is said the more you share and the harder you work together, the more you can achieve. This Society has a good reputation for sharing, working hard, and achieving great results. We have, within this Society, opportunities to experience the art world, improve our artistic skills, and make everlasting friendships. I welcome all new members to share this experience. Let s all appreciate this certainty in this world of uncertainty! Let s all create from our thoughts for the Spring Show, the Gallery Tour, the Loft Gallery and the Fall Show. This is a reminder to register online for the upcoming Spring Show (deadline March 15), and the Member Appreciation Dinner on September 30 (no charge just come & enjoy!). I hope that each member will show his or her support by participating and/or attending these events. The Loft Gallery has seen sales increase during 2016 to $12,575! A Gallery needs art! Every two months a new show is hung, and members are encouraged to contact asscgallery@gmail.com to enter. I look forward to viewing the themed creations of It s a Small World by the Art Challenge participants at the March meeting. Members will be attending the Night of Artists March 10, 11, 12 in St. Albert, exhibiting the wonderful artwork by our members, and spreading the good word about the ASSC. Enjoy yourselves. Apparently an average pencil has enough graphite to draw a line 35 miles long.. so how far has yours gone so far? Spring is still probably 2 months or so away so lots of time to draw the line further even to brush on a little paint! I will be back for the March meeting, recharged, and ready to march on brush in hand! Regards,Sonja Marinoske Thank you to Norma for handling the February meeting while I sat in the sun!

Loft Gallery: THE LOFT GALLERY & GIFT SHOP~OPEN SATURDAY & SUNDAY: 12-4 PM The March-April rotation has been hung and we are ready to start the year off with a great member show! Some Loft shifts for March and April remain to be filled. Members are urged to check the Loft Shift page and submit their choice(s) to asscgallery@gmail.com to earn some volunteer hours. April 1 is the deadline to indicate your intention to be part of the May-June rotation. Send an to asscgallery@gmail.com April 15 will be the deadline for art tag information. Arlene Bowles ( Loft co-chair) NEW!! TAKE NOTE!!! From now on, all communication for the Gallery, both Loft and Gift sections, (ie, participation in a rotation, art information for show tags, selection of Loft shifts) will be sent to the new rather than to Kay or Arlene s personal s. That way, both can access the s and there should be no more confusion regarding to whom submissions/questions should be sent. It will keep Gallery s separate from personal mail which should help. Also in the future, should there be a change of Chair/Co-Chair, members will not need to learn a new contact as this account will continue to receive s. The new is : asscgallery@gmail.com
Second Annual HIDDEN TREASURES OPEN STUDIO ART TOUR June 24th and 25th, am to 5 pm presented by the Art Society of Strathcona County We are in the planning stages for the 2nd Annual Hidden Treasures Open Studio Art Tour!! This is a self-guided tour of Strathcona County artists' working studios which is free to the public. Artists will be able to open up their creative spaces showing many works of art which will be for sale. Either open up your home studio or set up a booth in the Ottewell Center. All artists are required to be present for the duration of the tour. Home studios should have easy and safe access for the public and artists will need to ensure that they have liability coverage through their homeowner s insurance policy. Artists are encouraged to hold their own door prize as a method of capturing addresses for their mailing list. As per feedback from last year, we plan to allow participating artists to view all studios on the evening before the tour. On-line registration for both home and Ottewell Center artists opens February 1st. DUE TO LIMITED SPACE OF THE OTTEWELL CENTER, THE FIRST 10 ARTISTS WILL BE ACCEPTED. Registration is open to all ASSC members. There is no limit to home studios participating. Cost of registration is $50 for home studios and $60 for the Ottewell Center. Registration, payment and a digital image of your art must be received by February 28th. There are no refunds of registration. Send your digital image to normacallicott59@gmail.com. Additionally, contact Norma Callicott at with any questions you may have.
WORKSHOP NEWLETTER MARCH 2017 *The Paint Alongs have been cancelled until further notice due to a lack of participants. This is disappointing as members had asked the board ~~"is there a drop in with the ASSC so we can paint and socialize?" We tried and over the years less and less attended. On behalf of the Board, we would like to thank Margaret Klappstein for her dedication in opening, setting up and explaining/helping each session, and when she was unavailable, Val Holt and Sonja Marinoske who stepped in and thanks also to Sue Boland. 9 Library Corner: We make no apologies for thinking about spring now that we, for a brief time, could finally see the earth beneath the snow. With thoughts of warmer weather and seed catalogues in mind, here are some of our library resources to do with flowers. Flowers in Pastel: Abstract Painting Techniques DVD NEW By Debora Stewart This DVD melds drawing and pastel work. Starting with a blind contour drawing of flowers, it follows with discussions on composition and colour schemes. The pastel work comes at the end to add colour to the drawing. Flower Painting By Jenny Rodwell In step-by-step photos, the artist shows how to create 25 different flower paintings. Watercolour Flower Portraits By Billy Showell Billy Showell s work in watercolour is exquisite, reminiscent of botanical illustrations in Victorian books. Depicting the Colour in Flowers By Michael Wilcox This book is a primer in how to look at flowers with regard to their colour, and then to mix and use those colours. Straight-from-the-tube painting is forbidden!! The Flower Painter s Essential Handbook By Jill Bays Another book on watercolour and flowers. But this one is a step-by-step reference guide on how to draw and paint 50 popular flowers, so nonwatercolourists will benefit from reading it too! Watercolor from Within: Transparent Layering DVD By Barbara Nechis This book isn t directly associated with flowers, but the watercolour layering techniques will add depth to your floral masterpieces. The snow is back but we are still thinking of a colourful springtime. If you re looking for inspiration for your entries for the ASSC spring show, come and browse the resources in the library at the March meeting. You may find just the right artistic nudge that your creative spirit needs. Kind regards, Your Library Committee

SEND YOUR S TO THE MAIL BAG at: to remain anonymous just say so OR please use the Suggestion Box at the Centre. s anonymously to the Mail Bag: The dvd presentation on "Making Money with your Art" on Feb.4 was very informative. I came away with many ideas on how to keep a record of my art, how to price art to sell and information on deciding on what is the common theme through my artwork. There were also ideas on how to get exposure for your art, how to approach galleries and exhibitions, and information on permission, copyright and licensing. It was appropriate for new and experienced artists. As an emerging/developing artist, I found the information very essential in furthering my career. What I found even more valuable were the insights provided by the fellow society members as they provided personal insights into how they handled many of the issues raised in the dvd. One note of caution about the dvd is that some of the information is a bit dated developed primarily for an American audience. Please keep your s coming!
Members: If you are having a show or an art event, please send your information to Dianne Dixon, Newsletter Editor, at dcdixon@shaw.ca for inclusion in the Newsletter! Editor s Message: It would be very much appreciated if all submissions for the Newsletter could be sent by the 22nd of each month. And if you possibly can, please use Arial font for your submissions, (it just makes life easier for the editor.) I would like to have a small Gallery in the newsletter each month just to show what the members are working on. If you have a photo of a special piece of art that we could feature in the newsletter please send a photo of it with your name and medium and I will begin to build a file for future use. And the day came when the risk to remain tight in a bud was more painful than the risk it took to blossom. Anais Nin
