6 ABSTRACT An electrically operated hammer mill was designed, developed with locally available materials (with good engineering properties) and tested at Department of Agricultural and Bioresources Engineering Laboratory, Federal University of Technology Minna. The mill was designed for crushing grains such as maize, soya beans, bone. Performance evaluation was carried out using 2 kg as feed rate. From the result of the test, the crushing efficiency of the machine was found to be 95 %, 94.0 % and 93.3 % for dry maize under three different sieves diameters 5.5 mm, 4.0 mm and 3.5 mm respectively and the crushing capacity was found to be 17 kglhr, 12 kg/hr and 10 kglhr under three different speeds 1335 rpm, 725 rpm and 576 rpm, respectively. The economic evaluation of the machine revealed that the total cost to be NI07,300 for the construction. Hence due to the high output and good efficiency, the machine is affordable by the cooperatives farmers. vi
